I'm still on the fence. I like all the features and details of the SS, but I love the paint and articulation of the Medicom. The paint and arms on the Medi seem to be a bit better than SS. The hands and elbows on the SS are killing me, not so much the missed color, Helmet and vest issues..

I'm about to pull the trigger....cant. decide. what. to. do....

Medicom or Sideshow. I just collect the best looking figure on the market. Judging by the video, this is the best Vader so far on 1/6 scale category.

You do what I and a few others did and make a mix of the two. After all was done it came to a little under $200. Of course, I got the Medi cheap so that helped. It will take longer and you have to put some work into it but its a better product.

Awesome. Thanks! I'm sorry to distract from this awesome Vader coming up.

I bought the ROTJ Boba, I know he's missing a few killer details of the SS. But I think they nailed the paint app and he did have a higher jet pack in ROTJ.

Maybe I will get both someday. Right now, it wasn't a huge expense as it was some of my bonus money for training. Sweet!

I don think making the custom was a great call, but damn, that's a task. Anyway, link me to the thread of your Boba so I can stop thread jacking?

Congrats, friend!! I'm jealous. I bought our boy a Medicom ESB Darth Vader, not sure I could get this one past the Mrs..

Yeah, first flex hit me too, and I had totally forgot this was coming already. I guess I'm committed to the SS EX without question now. I never go the first one, so I'm really looking forward to finally having a Vader in my Star Wars setup.

It that supposed to help your argument? I don't get it. And no it don't take time to get things right if they are done right the first time! Also, to say the hobby might not be for someone cause they don't wanna have to go through the hassle of doing the figure the proper way it should've been done the first time from a reputable company is a huge generalization. (and i ain't talking about futzing)

:peace

(It's basically why everyone keeps asking if HT is ever going to do a Vader)

Really though, let's face it, you and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to things like this. Some people love the tweaking and futzing and all that, while some just want to take a figure out of the box and have it be "perfect"... I get a sense of satisfaction that goes to a whole new level when I make a figure even better than it was before. Darth Vader was released in 2009. That's four years ago... So think about this, when the figure came out there were a few obvious complaints, the dome and the height, etc. (and I agreed with all of those). Beyond that, the quality was there, and the vast majority of people will still say that was the best 1/6th Darth Vader ever made to that point (and it probably will be till this new SS version is released). So, why would you deprive yourself of having such an iconic figure in your collection when it was the best that you could get for years? And why would you not choose to make small upgrades over time if you felt you could improve your figure??? Heck, the same goes for Medicom, which I think is what you have if memory serves. I think that's a damn nice figure too, but if someone posted a basic body swap or custom item that could bring the figure up a couple notches closer to perfection would you not do it? Anyway, my point is that "perfection" is temporary. There's always a way to upgrade... at least that's my mindset.

It's also a huge generalization to say "everyone" keeps asking when HT will do a Vader. I know I don't, nor do MANY others here on the board. HT do great work, but their figures are not without flaw. I want HT to give us Han, Leia and more Luke.

I love customizing the figs. I own a few custom indy's and i keep on adding stuff when i have the time. I think it's whats keeping this hobby alive for me. Just having the normal figs isn't enough. All the wonderfull work people put into them is inspiring.

Best,

Robert

Best,

I feel the same, Robert. :duff: Nothing is ever 100% done.

That was so beautifully put. I wept. Yes. I did. WEPT! :crying

:lol You know what I mean though, right, Marc? Like the HT Reeves Supes is pretty damn perfect, IMO. Take it out of the box and figure out where you want to display it and you're done. When you compare that to something you've made your own through time and effort there's really no comparison.

I would agree. They look good, but a bit boring just to go from box to shelf.

I enjoy my figures more when I've done something to them. That is not to say those figures were wrong, but just something I wanted changed.

All these dolls we buy have flaws.

Yes we are indeed opposites. I really don't like customs at all. I want my figures mass produced, and i'd like them to be the best they can be out of the box. I'm more into posing the figures and using them rather than trying to "upgrade" them out of the box. Futzing is one thing, upgrading is another. I buy the SW figs i guess to rekindle nostalgia, and for me it would be like buying a Kenner fig and having to work on it if that makes sense.

My point still stands though about the 4 years. It shouldn't take that to get any figure right.

Point taken. I'm not saying you're POV isn't without merit, just that I feel quite the opposite.

I do want the figures I buy to be as nice as possible and if they always came out of the box like that it sure would be wonderful but man, how many figures a year can you even say that about?

I'm somewhere in the middle.

I really admire great custom work - & I think some of the custom SSC Vaders you guys have worked on & improved are really nice - as I've commented before. I'm in the process of putting together a plan for a couple of my own (not SW), but I feel that for example, in the case of the last SSC Vader - yes, while I actually do agree that it was a pretty solid figure, the mods needed to get it to 95% & above accuracy are too cost ineffective & way too much operating for me. By the time I get around to where some of the better ones in here are at, someone will have released something closer to my tastes possibly.

There's also the point to be made, that the KP02 bodies - while a great frame for OT Vader, isn't the solution entirely - nor any tall 1/6 muscle body for that matter, simply because the outfit accessories (boots, gloves etc) are too big for those base bodies. Then comes the cutting, lengthening etc, & it's just not something I'd personally be satisfied with in the end.

I do make some improvisations with my figures, and while i love it, I would rather have the figures come great or near perfect out of the box. My equation is simple - I am paying them money for a piece of art that "they think they put enough efforts to make it near perfect". Now, why would i wanna pay them so much money if i need to spend another 100 dollar to make corrections to it that should have come as a part of the release. There is enough room for doing a custom by mixing parts etc however in this case they rightly had 4 years to get the vader accurate and not like they are aiming to replicate a head sculpt as accurately as many other character figures come with (maul) etc. so its even more imp they shld get the helmet, costume, robe, every thing near perfect.

Lastly, people like me really dont have the talent to do some of the stuff that people do on these forums and if they sold it for 150 bucks i am ok buying parts, multiple vaders etc. the claim that all these companies make is that these are museum quality stuff, at least the thing should need little or barely any work as it comes out of the box...

I know people will differ but that's just my view.

I agree with that, Leon. Futzing is a lot different that customizing or upgrading. Everyone enjoys futzing to some degree. But if you feel you have to alter or buy new parts, bodies, heads etc, that's where I have an issue. For the price these things are at (and growing) you should not have to do much at all, besides futzing to make it look how you like on your shelf.
