I love many of Arnold's movies, but I am a bigger fan of Lee Marvin, even if his "action" wasn't quite as well choreographed and over the top as some of Arnie's stuff.

Setting aside his off-screen nuttiness, I have to admit there have been few Tom Cruise movies I haven't enjoyed. I don't know if there are any other actors around who are as committed in an action role as he is.

Only one of his action films I truly enjoyed was the first Mission Impossible.
Didn't think of him but yeah the Cruiser is good.

Marvin was a real action hero, a USMC PFC wounded in the Pacific campaign. You only have to look at his films such The Professionals, The Dirty Dozen, Prime Cut and Death Hunt to see he was equal if not better than many of his contemporaries.
Some great action films that have been forgotten or even devalued because of poor remakes.

Yeah, even films like Point Blank and the Killers had great action sequences with him. I'm guessing Nam never saw him in a film. Or maybe he's only happy with really over the top stuff involving aliens, folks being impaled with large poles, beheadings with the swipe of a knife, etc. Not that I have anything against that, but I'm not so close minded as to think that those are the only action movies and stars worth considering.

early action film star Douglas Fairbanks from Gunga Din, Errol Flynn from Robin Hood...How come no body mentions Charlton Heston--Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, omega Man, soylent green, POTA 1+2,lots of Westerns too...Burt Reynolds also had quite a few from the late 60s to 80s maybe even early 90s

Yea I can't pick Arnie over Sly mainly because of Rocky and Rambo. Throw in Cobra, Assassins and Copland for me and Sly it is.

I might be in the minority here but I think the Conan movies are awful. I like Arnold but Stallone is much better. He wrote Rocky and its sequels, directed all of them except the first and he even co wrote First Blood II which is the best in the series. He is the best action star IMO. He is a bad *** that has a heart, all of his movies circle around that message.
Arnold is great and I like some of his movies but it gets harder to believe him as all these characters he plays having an Austrian accent. He is the best in the Terminator movies because his accent sounds like a robot. I like some of his comedies like Kindergarten Cop and Twins but that is it. Junior is terrible.
Predator, the Terminator series and a handful of other action movies he has are the only ones I can sit through.
I can sit through all of Stallone's movies including Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!

No, Not really. They are action movies that have dramatic situations but they are basically action movies. I mean the guy is a boxer and he trains, and fights in all the movies. He may have problems with certain situations that seem to make the movie lean towards a drama but they are essentially action films.
First Blood is not even close to a drama. The whole movie is Sly jumping off mountains, shooting a helicopter down, blowing up stores, stealing army vehicles, wading through a pool of rats and escaping from a ******** cop. There is tons of action in that movie. I have no idea why you would think of it as a drama.

Even Oscar?
I don't see the Rocky films (we'll leave 5 out for obvious reasons) as being any different than Raging Bull or Ali. Those were also dramas, just not helmed by Sly. First Blood is absolutely a drama dealing with the issues our troops felt returning from Vietnam and the inability for America to accept those who fought in the war. Study up on PTSD and you'll see how it's a perfect drama. Hell, the fact that he gets arrested at the end instead of getting the girl and walking away into the sunset goes against the a-typical "action movie" setting. Especially for the time period in which it was made. The sequels, absolutely, all action movies, but they completely lacked the dramatic plot of the first film.

Raging Bull and Ali were both dramas and both incredibly boring. Rocky is a great story about a lovable loser that gets to redeem himself in life and love through what? A boxing match with the Heavyweight champion of the world. The movie starts off with Rocky boxing, he is a collector for a loan shark where his job is supposed to be about beating money out of people. He boxes at a gym, he gets the fight with Apollo and the rest of the movie is him training and eventually going the distance with the champ in a 15 round fight. He finds love, finds a mentor (Mick) and redeems himself as a human being but essentially it is a action movie. The action genre is not specific to blowing **** up with guns and winning the hearts of easy women.
The sequels are about the situations successful fighters go through but they include scenes with heavy doses of blood and dudes getting beat up in the ring.
First Blood is an action film. It is a smart action film that conveys the message that American society mistreated veterans of Vietnam because they fought in a war they disagreed with. But it does contain all of the situations you claim to be necessary for a true action film. Stallone goes through the ringer in that movie and it contains some heavy action scenes. **** gets blown up, people get hurt and one guy dies. It is an action film that has a good story to it, which is why I like Stallone because he normally adds a bit of meat to his action flicks. The movies aren't completely transparent like a lot of Arnold's movies. He gets arrested at the end instead of being shot by Trautman like the book because Stallone saw some kind of redeemable characteristics with John Rambo. He thought he could add some heart into this obviously troubled, war-hardened individual. Hence the sequels.
I have never seen Oscar sadly, but I bet I would like it. I caught some of it on T.V. once and it wasn't that bad.

I don't think Rocky films can be classed as action and definitely not the first one.
