Well, I did an about face and cancelled this. Just not sure about it. With this and KOTCS Indy shipping 1st quarter 2010, I can only budget for one item, and I'm more impressed with KOTCS Indy. Just a personal preference as I like figures more than props. If I change my mind down the road, I figured I can pick this up from an e-tailer for a cheaper price.

I think that's just sort of a boilerplate description. There's no way you can get a reflective finish like that using only paint.

You definately can, I asked my friend who works an autobody shop here in Jersey a few days ago when the preview pic surfaced, its just about using the right kind of clear coat finish and the right kind of paint. He said it may be similar to the kind of paint they used on the movie Green Goblin, to give him the two differant colored reflectivitely.

Again factor in that the Idol environment with Belloq was like $120 and only the front step was actual polystone, the rest was plastic. So how did they manage to use about 5 times as much polystone here, and real gold for only $60 more?

I'm starting to think the Base is plastic, and the idol is just painted Polystone. Only real way to acheive that price range. If thats the case theres gonna be alot of cancelations, this just seems way to good to be true.

Yeah, I was stunned at the price. I was prepared to pay upwards of $400 for this. But, the lower price definitely gives me pause.

I've seen gold paint look that good, I'll take a pic on my phone next time I drive past the shop he works at, its just right around the corner.

The owner's truck is actually gold and bronze paint applied the way they did Green Goblin's costume so it gives off a two-tone look in the sunlight, and looks just like the idol which is what makes me so leary.

I just hope the base ends up being Polystone, really I just want the base to display my Gobler Idol. But I can't fathom paying that much for it if the base is just plastic.

Well, he says that it's got this great plating to it that makes it look like its solid goal, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's actually plated. His description could be misinterpreted for one thing when it's something else.

I guess my question for you is, if it is possible to do a chrome-like finish with just paint, why the Ark's paint job turn out so ho-hum?

Of course in the end, as Darren said, it doesn't really matter what they use as long as it looks good.

I can only assume for the same reason the proportions are wrong, they didn't have enough time. It was already delayed and people were getting jittery.

But the ark is also far more complex, the little turns and grooves, especially on the lid with the little angels lining the edges and the cherubs. Thats why it'd be impossible to use real gold plating on an ark that size, the little angels around the border wouldn't hold up, there just too detailed and tiny.

Possibly, although the Hasbro ark is similarly detailed, and most of it is chromed (except for the angels). But if you think about it, if you can chrome a 3.75" C-3PO figure, it stands to reason that it's possible to do it for the ark. I think it was mostly a matter of money. Going with paint is cheaper and probably less prone to defects, and they gambled that most people wouldn't mind. It would be a lot harder to get away with that for something like the fertility idol.

I hope they learn their lesson from all the cancelled Arks and make this idol correctly. I was forgiving on the ark, but this thing had better shine like the top of the Chrysler Building (which apparently is very shiny).

I have the same concerns as everyone else. I guess my other concern is the proportions. It says it is 10" high but does that include the stand? I assume also the 3 lbs is just the idol and the rest of the 12lbs is the stand and the shipping stuff. So the base is probably polystone then you think?

Video on the website makes a point that the idol is plated polystone. No word on whether the base is polystone.

I'm thinking that the idol may be connected to the base. If so, that would SUCK!!! Most idols measure in around 8" (at least the correct ones do) so I'm guessing that measurement of 10" is adding the base to the height.

No, it is removable. They showed it on the video at the con.

Yeah, I saw that in the video. I was worried at first the Idol was stuck to the base too. Thank God it isn't because that WOULD stink!

I also heard the SideShow guy in the video mention it was plated yet the official description on their site says this...

"Each piece is individually painted and finished to exacting standards, each with its own unique quality and detail that..."

Now how can it be painted and plated?

Unless the description means that each base is hand painted? It is rather vague because it doesn't specifically say each Idol is hand painted.....It says each "piece"....

I hope SideShow releases a little bit more info to clear up some of the confusion.
