[...] We may be forever jaded.

My tastes have always been broader than genre films. It's possible and maybe no great tragedy that I've simply outgrown them, for the most part. Doesn't mean I hate them now but it's time to go enjoy something else, to *think* about something else.

I mean I used to listen to very heavy music. I saw Nine Inch Nails four times, I would listen to Ministry or Skinny Puppy in the background when I was working. I don't "reject" those old bands now, but they're firmly in my rearview mirror at this point in terms of my personal taste and emotional and cognitive development. Something I may revisit once in a blue moon and enjoy, but that for all practical purposes I'm done with.

It seems plausible that...there are certain genres whether they be Industrial music or Superhero films, that have a relatively narrow emotional and artistic range. They peak and everything after, however competently executed, is inevitably a copy of a copy. Where do you go after The Fragile? Where do you go after The Infinity Saga? After the OT?

Maybe. I'll have to think about it more.

In a way I think the past decade has been one of delayed wish fulfillment ... seeing things onscreen at a level of quality a geeky 14-year old could never have imagined, greater mainstream popularity, incredible collectible toys ... but time marches on and we change. At least we should change.

Well, that may not be the best example if you grew up in the 70's with all those black light posters that looked like Avatar, floating islands an all. :lol

Plus, Cameron's typical blue-collar marine-team repeat. The movie felt like Aliens inside a 70's black-light poster to me... except it was tragically boring.

The idea of the avatar is likely the best thing from that movie (other than the 3D experience). To bad he can't just use that idea for space travel and have all new adventures on other worlds with other life forms.

I would have accepted the tropes if the writing had been good. The script made no ****ing sense. It was stupid.

Yeah. Like Lucas, Cameron got so involved in the minutia of the world that he forgot that most viewers had no time or interest in the three-petal fauna in the background ... he forgot to make the story as interesting as his world.

Pretty much every single medium exists in some form of stagnation nowadays. one doesn't have to look further than YouTube to see how society has changed in the past decade and some change. The site went from rather "open" and full of people just posting fun, dumb and just weird nonsense, to a heavily moderated and curated machine. I remeber that you'd click a vid and then every single video on your rec list would be something you hadn't even heard of before. You'd click one, then another and suddenly you'd be going down a rabbit hole, uncovering new stuff along the way. Nowadays you literally get the same vids over and over, stuck in a loop. I've let vids play automatically, one after the other, and depending on which vid I start, throughout the entire day I'll "watch" the same exact vids. Sometimes the sequence changes but it usually remains largely the same. Everyone chases the monetization money and tries to rig the algorythm. There's nothing genuine anymore, done purely for fun and the act of creation. It's all just chasing the cash.

There's a quote, I think by Alan Moore but I'm not sure, where he describes current comics. Way back when, you basically had second rate novelists writing those things. Then you had the the failed novelists aping those previous novelists. At some point you had people whose only references were those comics trying to write the new comics. At this point you have "writers" whose only frame of reference are the low-quality capes they read as kids. Not Shakespeare, not even Dickens, but just soulless, empty capes. Expand that to the entire entertainment industry and you get the current landscape. People don't have new ideas anymore. They just want to take X thing they liked as kids and rework it with their current beliefs. They can't create anything new. That's why everything is the same thing repeated over and over. Remember all the Mad Men clones around the early 10s? Remember how everyone wanted the next Halo and CoD? For God's sake, WB greenlit Green Lantern purely because they wanted an Air-Force Character since they thought Tony flying next to the jets is what made Iron Man a success. It's all mental.

Say what you will about Star Wars, but that was an honest creation. Lucas was inspired by a myriad different things he had consumed. Flash Gordon, Dune, Foundation, Westerns and Samurai films. Put them all together, add some real world inspiration, and you have something entirely new. When the time came for him to do the Prequels, he shook things up and sought inspiration elsewhere, in the Ancient World. How succesfull it was is up for debate, but the man created something new. He took bits and pieces from popular culture, added his own ideas, mixed it all with the real world, and created something that was his own. That's how fiction used to come about. The real world influencing the fictional. A war, a famine, a culture, giving an idea to someone. Creation was a way of expression. Even if it was for money, it was still genuine.

But what do we have now? What are the new IPs and franchises? I honestly can't think of anything current that's in any way unique. TV Shows? Movies? Comics? Games? Nothing. Something works and everyone else just copies it. Which is inevitable, yes. But nobody has any frame of reference other than pop culture these days, so nothing new gets added. It's all an endless repetition. If it was just the "blockbusters" fine, that'd be to be expected. But now I can scarcely find any content in general that feels fresh, across all mediums and genres.

I honestly don't know where we go from here.

Well there will never be another SW. Studios are so on top of the IPs that another creator like that can't have the control he wants. SW was so revolutionary in filmmaking that it barely made it into theatres. What I look to is what is unique in storytelling and not in it's setting. I think every setting imaginable has been done. I see futuristic Cyberpunk is territory that is largely unexplored. The videogame proved that the interest is there for it, but it just didn't execute on a technical standpoint.

I think there is a huge market for a big budget D&D. It finally looks like they are getting around to it with Chris Pine staring. LOTR/GoT/Witcher proves the interest is there. It is all about storytelling and the unique look/events it can capture. Videogames are the best place right now for those unique experiences that movies just fail to capture today. People are so desensitized to storytelling that you need a little shock and awe like GoT to really draw people in.

I think Game of Thrones was fresh in the same way Star Wars was: taking very familiar elements, mixing them together and adding them up in a new way. Clearly LOTR inspiration had a big part to play, but GoT took that stilted fantasy, streamlined it, centered on families and made it 'today' - sexy, graphic, mean, intriguing, with tons of cliffhanger shocks. Perfect for television. Would never have worked as a movie. It is a broad, well-thought out world that makes sense within its confines.

More can come, but it won't be through the studio system -- whatever that even means anymore. Unfortunately television is the medium most likely to provide the next Star Wars experience. Unless someone with great connections can con his way into making a ''little movie'' that taps into the pop culture zeitgeist and delivers a vision that is so fresh it seems brand new. Like Lucas did long ago. No one can imagine what that might be... but it will somehow seem so obvious after the fact.

If this next attempt with Twilight star Son of Pattin doesn't bear fruit, then the next go will be Black Batman.

Especially if Black Superman has any resonance at all.

They're already working on the next Batman project after Twilight star Son of Pattin, they've chosen an actor and everything.

Batman is the dude that played Mr. Mom and Beetlejuice in the 90s. I forget his name but he ain't black.

That's a nostalgia nod so old men like you can clap your flippers and sigh a sign of relief that the world hasn't changed too much without you. Enjoy Keaton Bats... I'm quite certain you will regret ever wishing for this. Think Indiana Jones.

Maybe at the end of the movie, Keaton will hand his cowl to his adopted black son.

Savage as usual lol

I personally want a Batman with a heavy irish accent.

I don't want to see it happen at all, trust me. I was getting excited when it looked like he was backing out of the project. :lol

Really don't want to see him back again, and certainly not with Ezra Miller. Keaton Batman is one of the few 80s icons that hasn't been meddled or tampered with till now. I've seen enough of the hero turned old miserable cuck trope to know this won't end well.

I've always said if you're going to do a Batman movie do it fresh with a detective/thriller angle. So far, that new Batman movie seems to be on the right track with it's Zodiac Killer Riddler. That's about the only thing that's intriguing about it to me. We'll see though, I'm cautious because I thought there was interesting story potential to have a middle aged, cynical Batman go up against the Man of Steel . . .

If these movies have taught me anything it's that the premise and execution are two very different things.

I think you mean black daughter, a tease for BATGIRL (2026).

Yep, that's EXCATLY what I'm excited about.

But after finally seeing Pattinson in Tenet, I am no longer expecting much from him as Batman. The Riddler has got to hold this whole thing together now. Tough act. Only Ledger managed that trick.
