Lol, I think you're overinflating the HT's "dishonest" behavior. They're selling a figure, based off of the licenses that they were given and provided a product that you obviously don't like. If the complaint is over a headsculpt, then I would say that's an extreme reaction towards one product. I will also go out to point out that there are a TON of RDJ sculpts to choose from if this is not to your liking. But hey, that's just my two cents!

Yes, it's important to understand what you are talking about when you say things like "dishonest behavior."

On the listing itself it says "Prototype shown is not final. Pending licensor and talent approval."

The photos that Hot Toys put up for preorder is what they wanted to deliver. Everyone is free to dislike the new sculpt (I think it's terrible), but it's important to understand what led to it.

This was most likely a revision demanded, and approved by, Disney or RDJ.

Sorry for going off-topic, but I missed this about Obi-Wan, could you let me know what JC Hong said about the likeness for that figure?

He replied to someone?s comment on IG back when Obi first came out saying that the sculpt was tweaked due to licensor approval. There may be an old post over in that thread about it.

seems like poor paint application rather than a full sculpt change. Only thing I can see really changed in the sculpt is the hair.

I believe this is correct. While the sculpt is completely different from what is shown in the pre order photos, it is visibly the same updated sculpt that JC Hong later revealed (the as you note the production version has updated hair). However, Hong's paint application obviously elevated the sculpt considerably, it seems.

I wonder if COVID has impacted HT's production painters in some way.

Based on past experience in licensing approvals, they don't care that much about accuracy in face sculpts - which is why you will find a lot of stuff, particularly non-hot toys products, that have terrible likeness. What you have to question is why Hot Toys would submit something like that Ant Man smiling sculpt for approval. And keep in mind, the stuff they are submitting for approval is generally better looking than the final product. A somewhat poor sculpt can still look good if painted well, but any issues become more glaring with production paint (especially when you're pushing out so many more products and using more factories).

People pre-ordered based on how the prototype looked. They didn't pay all that money to receive something different and inferior.

So you should have to shell out another $50-$100 on a separate sculpt on top of a $400 toy?

Poor JC Hong, I've seen some of his IG posts before where he's basically like sorry guys, I'm just the painter please forgive. Feel a bit bad he's being bombarded with comments.

At the same time I'm so glad that Hot Toys are getting universal **** for this sculpt. They ****ed up, and it is probably most definitely due to licensing issues. But regardless, if they even remotely change the BD sculpt they gonna get F'd in the A with cancellations. That sculpt is perfect. This one was too, there's a myriad of changes they made to it and none of them work.

Really not sure to keep pre-order or not...

Thankfully I’m done with hot toys after this and endgame captain America, which will also probably suck. I’m sure there are some idiots out there that will praise this thing. Luckily I have the MK 46 if I want to use that unmasked head, as that actually looks like RDJ.

If a client or licensor asks for a change, they will tell you what they are wanting the new product to be. At levels like this, you can bet that the feedback was extensive and specific. There may have been several rounds of back and forth revisions on the sculpt with Disney/RDJ. They most likely pushed the sculpt in this direction. If the contract says that the client gets the final approval, then that is how it works. Even if the final sculpt is terrible. Even if Hot Toys knows it is terrible.

That is just how this stuff works.

I'm not defending a bad sculpt, but as someone who has been working as a designer for a rather long time, I have had many experiences where a client's repeated asks and demands lead to us releasing work that we all thought was bad and we worried would tarnish our professional reputations.

RDj doesn't care about how "screen accurate" the final sculpt is. He cares about how it makes him look.


He may have specifically pushed for this to look "less wrinkled," "younger" and "happier" or something.
