There are almost always rave reviews when initial reactions are released.
I know you're trying to make a point, but the actual reviews for TLJ stayed amazingly positive. It was the fan reviews that were split.

Between that reaction & the seemingly unanimous praise for Ben Mendelsohn's villain, I'm optimistic. Plus the one semi-negative reaction (the one that thought the first half was rather slow/tedious) also indicated the VFX were much better than what's been seen in the trailers, so that's good news.

I don’t take Brie Larson’s fake activism seriously anyways it’s all silly shallow stupid marketing.
I mean with all the real suffering in the world she decided to fall on the sword for “press junket diversity”!
Seriously why get upset over something so stupid and meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
I just ignore her activism just give me a good superhero movie and from what i’m reading the movie is quite unique.
Her Ripley/Indy comments actually bothered me more than her silly press junket comments.
Let her be clueless I don’t care it’s not like I have to live with her she is a nobody to me just give me a good movie ignore all the stupid noise.

Apparently Mendo steals the show. All I needed to hear. Now the real question: is that it from the film from HT, silly green costume ex aside?
Alita is a tricky film to review. If you aren't a fan of the original anime/manga or just anime in general then I could see how a person might take it as empty spectacle with an annoying open ending leading to stories that might never come to be (like Terminator Salvation and Genisys.) Or it might come across as a Ghost in the Shell/Real Steel copycat.
But man, if you know the anime they freaking hit this one *out of the park.* Rather than just condensing the entirety of the manga into one two hour flick (like AKIRA somehow masterfully accomplished) Alita just tackled the first few volumes of the manga. It more closely follows the 55 minute straight to video movie from 1993 but adds backstory and some sequences that otherwise didn't appear until later in the manga.
You'll either like that approach or you won't and its box office earnings might mean that no future stories ever come to be (though since James Cameron owns the film rights exclusively he may just pony up the dough for a sequel himself a la Lucas and the PT.)
Battle Angel is a bit of an unusual choice to get the big budget live-action treatment (way more niche and fringe than the GitS's and AKIRA's of the world) but if there's anything you liked in the original OVA series then it's pretty much guaranteed to be in this one. This is as true an anime adaptation as we may ever see. Does that translate to it being on par with Blade Runner or RoboCop or The Matrix? Not quite but it's a site to behold and one I'd wholeheartedly recommend catching on the biggest screen possible.
I do think if they're allowed to continue with this story then in time it could definitely end up being on par with those other classics. It just has too big a story to fit into one two hour flick.

I just told a few homeless minority women at my local shelter for abused women that Brie Larson WILL ABSOLUTELY increase minority women’s voices at Hollywood press junkets, she’s got their backs!
They fell on their knees and cried at how much that will impact their lives they said if they had to experience one more white guy interview a celebrity with prepared questions they would’ve dropped into deep depression.

Funniest thing I'll read today.
Haven't forgotten the mass hysteria critic reviews for BP "I can't physically throw up in my mouth"...and then when I finally saw on screen staring in disbelief that CGI like that had made it into a Marvel film...
Sure there are good parts in CM. There's good stuff in all the MCU films *shrug*.
