That's probably sound advice. Can't see the previous release fetching $600.00 anymore once people know the new one is on the way (I guess unless the buyer is a super hardcore fan of Vader's ANH look).

Holy moly, though, this looks great! Like the way that cape is sitting on Vader's shoulders. Hope they include an alternate sculpted helmet, though. Also hoping this comes with a cool exclusive. Don't like paying the extra for shipping, duties, etc., but it would be worthwhile for Vader. Think I might even pick up a spare on this one.

Any oldtimers have an idea of how long it takes to go from Facebook reveal to pre-order? Are we looking at that happening sometime around SDCC? Sure would be nice if it's earlier. Would sleep better knowing my order's in for Vader!

Is this a PF or 1:6?

Looks like they're imitating Vader's pose from the Mythos statue, but this is definitely 1:6.

I really really hope it's two separate sculpts. I hate the whole reveal idea. Make the helm way to fragile on the Medicom figure.

Wor-Gar

Looks like the same cape material to me, which makes me sad because I was hoping to upgrade my ANH version.

But the removable helmet and sculpt look terrific. With the window and the full reveal I'd say this is ROTJ. Not sure there's a big enough difference to do an ROTJ version and still an ESB version.

I'd always heard it was going to be an ESB/ROTJ hybrid. Pretty certain they won't bother doing seperate releases.

In regards to the cape, you sure it's the same? I thought it looked pretty good on his shoulders, but never owned the previous Vader, so have no experience with that cape. Guess if it is the same, at least we have people now that have already gone through the trial-and-error process and can provide capes to those that want them.

Good, glad this will be their final OT Vader effort and cover both sequels.

The sculpt looks great from what I can see. At least they didn't do Hayden in there to try and obliterate the OT entirely (at least it doesn't look like Hayden to me -- but maybe that's what the 2nd sculpt is).

They confirmed long ago in an interview (I think with Cool Toys?) that they had corrected the height, so that shouldn't be an issue.

As for the cape, I can't believe they'd use the same one. The cape changed pretty significantly from ANH to ESB. Can't see them cheaping out on that.

Also very much hoping that they will release the Death Star window as an environment piece. Don't know why they don't release easy pieces like that when they could make a killing on them.

They cheaped out on the first one so why not again? Lando's too. Takes a lot of material to make those capes so I guess its an easy cost-cutter. Just hope they fix that... if they did solve the height issue then I'm very stoked for this.

That background does not look like a screengrab from ROTJ, though. Never know, it could be an environment. Would be easy to make, should be fairly inexpensive and would go great with Vader and Emperor. Certainly would be easier to produce than the stuff they've made, so far.

Depending what I do with my displays and what environments come out, I could see having two Vaders in two seperate displays. Especially in your case, where you'd have an ANH and an ESB/ROTJ version (I mean assuming you bought the new one), I could totally see that working.

Pretty sure I'll be picking-up two just because they won't be making another for a very long time and secondary market prices will be terrible once this sells out. I'm assuming this will have a really big run, though.

Really exciting news... I missed the ANH Vader, then was sort of glad I missed it due to the height, cape, gloves and dome issues everyone seemed to be trying to fix (a HASBRO dome fixes your Sideshow Vader?!) And to me the ESB/ROTJ version is best anyway.

I see lots of bits in a google search, but is there any thread that says what Hurricane's Vader/s were exactly? He was a customs guy that did an upgrade/repaint to the SSC Vader and sold them, or was it more of a full custom creation like Rainman?

Hurc's been building Vader's since 2003. I got one in early 2005, his first light up Vader -- chest box, belt boxes and saber. It also had the Hasbro sound box for voice, breathing and saber sounds. It was build from the ground up using various parts from model kits and many that he machined himself -- real metal bits in the reveal helmet. Basically the one I have can do everything the real vader can do short of walk. It still blows away many figs in my collection and can stand alongside recent HT figures without shame.

Wow, would love to hold one of these Hurricane Vaders. They were done way before I got into this hobby. I know this is 5-8 years ago (several eras ago in terms of prices it seems,) but how much were they - Rainman prices?

Interesting to see how they compare with this new SSC release in-hand, just like it's possible Rainman's Marty will still be better than HT's.

Wor-Gar
06-01-2012, 03:40 PM
They were almost Rainman prices back then. I paid a very expensive penny for the first "deluxe with lights" one. I think eventually he even got so advanced as to make the blinking chest lights blink in the correct pattern.

He also made a reveal Fett for me after that that I also treasure -- voice function (OT Voice), jetpack light and chest light works, real metal bits, etc.

Anyway, yes, it will be interesting to see the gap narrow even further with this new SS release. Curious just how good it will be next to Hurc's... and which one I feel will be the definitive one (emotions aside).

Was that Fett a "ground up" custom, or did he use upgraded Marmit gear with a customized Hasbro OTC helmet like the ROTJ version he did later (just found that thread)?

This new Vader is like the ultimate upgrade to the Hasbro removable helmet one that came out years ago. That one had a decent Shaw head sculpt for the time, maybe useful if SSC decides to turn to the dork side and do a Hayden head in there.

Fett was also a ground up build but relied on available parts from Marmit and the soft pouches and sound from the Hasbro 12". I think the Marmit bucket was too small and it turned out that the hasbro helmet on the later Fett actually had the better angled shape so we used that. It was more of a bash than Vader but Hurc still managed to surprise me with real metal spiks on the toes, knee darts, the barrel of the rifle, and a few other places. Plus it had a full repaint, weathering, etc.

But like Vader, I'm almost afraid to touch it its so delicate.

Yep, kaiyodo was a great kit. I have that one also (all the SW kaiyodo actually). Small though for 1/6th. I think he recasted and enlarged over time, making his own alterations along the way. He used some Hasbro parts too. He, like many, liked the Hasbro dome...which I never liked. I think he made so many Vader's that it really depended on the price someone wanted to spend that determined what parts he'd use to make it affordable.

Yeah - this figure is, for the most part, simply a re-issue... without throwing in some major new goodies, how could it jump $100 over the previous release?

But then the last three years have gone completely crazy with prices... maybe SSC looks at HT Indy or Joker and says "they get it on those characters, why can't we?"

Fans wanting a 1/6 Vader can either pay $220+ for this new release or pay the insane numbers the old ANH release has been fetching (at least until today.)

I'm pretty nitpicky but I wouldn't have any concerns about the quality of this Vader matching Hot Toys' Luke release. This, IG-88 and Boba Fett all look fantastic, either in-hand (IG) or just judging from the prototypes in Boba and Vader's case.

I would guess Hot Toys will eventually be allowed to do Vader, but if that's the case it would have to be 3+ years away. On the other hand, if they wanted HT to do it, they could've let them with this iteration instead of working on it themselves. Wouldn't wait for HT, personally.

Yeah Boba Fett does look really nice. I'm not sure how many SW figures I can do with all of the Avengers stuff. Vader will be the first one I get, and if Boba Fett doesn't sell out soon I might fudge him into my FLEXpay. I have to have Luke though.

Invictus Sol

Yeah, Avengers is a huge commitment and totally understandable that it's going to squeeze a lot of other stuff out. I've been keeping tabs on all those threads in the Marvel section, but fortunately for me I'm just not too interested in the movie versions of a lot of those characters (though loved the movie, like pretty much everyone else). I picked-up War Machine SV and think that figure looks amazing. I'm going to bide my time and pick-up an Iron Man at some point to display with him and then maybe some stuff here and there as it comes out. Hoping SSC will release a 1:6 comics version of Doctor Doom, at some point.

Think you're pretty safe on Boba Fett, though. I could be wrong, but I'm getting the impression from SSC's to-be-determined edition size that this will be a big run. Plus if for some reason it does sell out, there will be a ton of SSC partner sites that will have it in stock for a limited window of time.

Yeah, Marvel is my main thing, then G.I. Joe (but not 12"), and then Star Wars. So I'll grab a couple of SW things this year, and see how it goes. I'll take your advice on Boba Fett and just play it by ear. Darth Vader I'll grab once he's up for PO.

Can't stand this orgy of Avengers that's spread like a seasonal virus through this place. It's like watching a 3-mile line of nerds camped outside the Apple store for the next must-have tekky gadget. I do 'get it', I'm just bored to tears by most of it. It's refreshing to visit this section and be reminded of the classics.

:rotfl The movie was fun, but I know what you mean. Is there some kind of marketing virus that creates all these Avengers sigs on here? That "Gay Avengers" poster someone did would make a great sig though - funniest thing ever.

Even though Anakin's human, his scarring makes the paint apps more alien and Sideshow has always managed to turn out really nice paint work on their creatures, even Palpatine came out real nice. The only real weakness in their paint, though sure it could aways be better, are eyes, they're always so basic.

To me, 3 areas kept the ANH Vader from that.

- Height
- Dome
- Cape

Improve all those areas and keep everything else that was right about ANH Vader and you'll have one damn fine figure. I always felt there was almost a PF quality to the ANH Vader, but the factors I mentioned do hurt it a bit.

As far as I know, Sideshow's never even hinted that Vader's belt or chest piece will light up. It's just hoped for, given the level of detail we now all know is possible (e.g., light up features in Iron Man, IG-88).

Pretty much. I thought it was a good all around Vader. Eyebrows don't make sense on a burnt head, and Vader wasn't always sad, defeated guy under the mask. It is more of a "I'm still a bad mofo" Vader. I thought of is as what Vader would have looked like while brooding in his pod on the Star Destroyer before his dome came down. Anakin/Vader is an angry guy.

Shoot. I'm sure it will look awesome but I don't want ANY deviations from his appearance in 1983. 2004 singed eyebrows might "make sense," but not for Shaw as he originally appeared and I don't want to be reminded of Lucas' revisions in any way when I glance at my collectibles. Oh well, the dome is really all that matters anyway. If they nailed that I'll be good. :)

And I don't want to pay €20,- more for something I would use 1 time and never ever again... It's just a cool feature nothing more nothing less. And as some people already said; if they just fix the 3 points of the ANH version (dome, cape and height) this could be the best 12" Vader ever made (until now)!
He doesn't need lights for that :dunno

And something I'm afraid of is that the lights wouldn't work properly. And that could piss of a lot of the "OMG I want lights in Vader" fans :wink1:

No lights would definitely not be a dealbreaker and I won't complain as long as they nail the other points everyone's mentioned (height, dome, cape, gloves -- it's like a mantra!), for sure. At the same time, I'd still think it was cool if they were included and I'd use it for display purposes or photos. I'm sure Sideshow considered it, so if they're not there, I'm guessing there'll be a good reason.

What about a c3po with light up eyes??? I'll use that more than once....

I could live without lights on Vader, no problem, but no lights for 3PO's eyes would mean this cat starts flipping desks and other miscellaneous furniture!

:goodpost: It would be amazing - seeing BD Luke Besp lit by those lights!

But has SSC ever done lights to this degree on a 1/6 fig before? Seems like it would be tough to get right. They didn't do it at all for 1/6 Han Carb, then did with 1/4 Han Carb - but that's PF.

I just think that in SW, you didn't really see Vader in a dark room much (the Ben/Vader duel's bright TV style lighting looks like it's from an ep of "Happy Days"), but in ESB and ROJ, he was in dark rooms for the duels, throne rooms, SD bridges etc., so it's part of the iconic look for those movies.

I was surprised by the light paint apps on the ANH Vader. While obviously not the same as true lights, they got some sort of effect with the paint that makes them look lit even if they're not.

Lights are a nice added feature and can make expensive pieces feel worth the price, but lights as features of a character are a bit wasted, most people will use them briefly and leave them off the majority of time.

The only time I think lights are really necessary are certain display bases, where the light is part of displaying the piece. Like if Han in Carbonite had a spotlight over him to mirror the look from the movie, that would have been cool and used with frequency. Lights in Vader's chest box and belt would be used occassionally for photos or showing off the figure but be off most of the time.

I considered keeping ANH Vader, but everyone pretty much knew this was going to happen eventually. "Issues" with the ANH version aside (I didn't care), Vader in ESB is the one to have.

Kind of thought HT would have tackled it, though. No biggie though. I will be displaying him with the helmet so even though a HT-painted headsculpt would have been nice, it's not essential.

Just remember Sideshow - THAT is why people pay HT prices. :)

Thanks to SilentSurfer for easing everyones mind about the sculpt. A bad ass Shaw sculpt simillar to the 1:1 is a must. As far as the lights go, they would be cool on the chest but I'd like to see a good functioning light up saber more than anything.

I'd bet my chips on this being between $200-$225. If they were asking $175 for Fett & IG-88, then this would probably be more based on the facts that there's a helmet plus a head sculpt and it's VADER!
