Why do monthly coupon codes stop working a day before they are supposed to expire

The monthly code we got in feb isn't supposed to expire until 12am on March 7th, but it won't work as of 8pm pst on March 6
I can add code but when I try to complete purchase it says sorry there is an error monthly code is expired. Why not just say it expires on the 6th... wish I had known wouldn't have waited but obviously I thought I had until Monday (12am) to complete this purchase.
