I just got back. I loved this movie. It was just fantastic! I have to admit I never knew the play. I still loved every minute of this movie. What a shocker at the end. I did not see that twist coming. Very cool movie.

On a side note. It was funny to watch all of these old women come in and watch it. They were horrified. :lol The one lady I could hear saying that she felt like throwing up. That really was the icing on the cake. :rotfl

Can't wait to see it!!!

Do you guys think it was Johnny’s idea to use Tim Burton’s hair as a reference to his character? :lol

For the most part, I was happy with the adaptation of the score. I didn't miss "Parlor Songs" at all and I'm actually glad it was cut.

It was strange that Burton cut all use of the chorus. I missed the recurring "Ballad" throughout, and "God, That's Good" was not what it should have been without the customers singing.

Yes, I missed the lyrics to the Ballad too. I went in singing "swing your razor high Sweeney" but that lyric's no where in the film. I guess they were trying to make it less "musical theatre" by doing that, but I agree that it was missed.

I went in with some misgivings since I am not a Sondheim fan in most cases. Even with that in mind, I've always liked the show itself (but not enough to rave over because of the overall Sondheim music bias). The movie was very good...and there were so many good things about it that I was able to really enjoy it. Adaptation was done well....LIKED the intimacy of focusing on each major/sub-major character that was achieved by deleting the chorus numbers. Did not feel like a Broadway show adaptation. Not once did I get the thought "well, here's the lead up to the boffo Act I finale" or "the big money production number". Focus was on characters and whatever character definition that might have been lost with deleting some of their songs was made up with the excellent acting. Depp and Bonham Carter and Rickman were great and their transition from speech into talk/song then full song was very slickly done. Cinematography and scene design were fabulous.

I went and saw it a second time the other day and two people walked out of the theater and never came back about 30 minutes into the film. Apparently they had no idea it was a musical. :lol

I saw it a few days ago and loved it, but I've never seen the musical (or even heard of it until the film). Did anyone else think of The Josh when Todd and Lovitt were singing "A Little Priest" and they said the Politician is so oily it is served with a doily? :lol

First, how they could cast Tony Head in a musical and not let him sing is beyond me.

I love the film. Missed the chorus singing but understand the decision. My only dissapointment, which is a personal preference, is that I like movies that are open and big. This was so intimate that it felt at times claustraphbic.

Depp and Bonham Carter are in their 40s so I felt their casting was right. It would have been nice to live in a world where strong singers would sell tickets but we don't. Besides, the lead's voices are pleasing enough and their star power and their power to draw in the crowds balances out their less polished singing.

I was thinking the other day how the film would have been different had Baz Luhrmann directed it. While I'm not sure he would have been as respectful to the source material, I'm sure it would have been powerful.

got my first chance to see this today. Utterly stunning!!!!!
For all those worried about it being a musical, it really isn't. The story never stops for the songs, the songs drive the story forward at all times. Depp is awesome, the only American I've ever seen that can truly pull off a cockney accent without sounding like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins! On top of that, to be able to sing in that accent?

a fantastic story, Tim Burton at his very darkest, an awesome piece of work. Please go and see it and give this movie the support it deserves, this is Art!

Thank you I will …as soon as a can.:joy

My wife and I finally got around to seeing it tonight. I loved it. My wife really loved it. A little blood never bothers her!

I'd never heard the Sondheim musical before and was only vaguely familiar with the story, so it was very fresh for me. I enjoyed very minute of it. The music, the cinematography, the costumes, the directing...everything. The very last shot was simply beautiful.

I was surprised by how many people actually got up an left not even 15 minutes into it. Does singing really bother that many people? And by now wouldn't they know it was a musical?

Sorry, but I must say I did not like it at all. Maybe I am just old school, but I do not need close-ups of throats being slashed and blood spurting like semen in a porno film ... and I use that comparison because that is sure what it reminded me of.

The singing was that same old Broadway - sing/talking that PHANTOM made so popular. Just about every "song" sounded the same with perhaps one exception. Depp was very good as always and Carter did a fine job. Cohen was wasted and way too over the top to be interesting. Rickman does the usual evil Prince John routine that he has been doing for 20 years now. I just wonder... WHY? Why make something like this. What is the purpose of it? IS this art?

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, but I couldn't stomach the music. I love musicals, but this was terrible. Too many up and down melody, which was the same recycled crap throughout.

Good story, acting, and sets though. I wished in this case, I think it would have been better served not as a musical.

Absolutely loved it. I was very entertained and the blood was so much fun! One of my favorite scenes was when they were on the beach. :rock

I'm not a big musical fan, but aren't all musicals built around recurring themes?

I thought the overall look of the movie was beautiful. I loved Burton's direction. Is it art? To me it is. I certainly didn't equate all the blood with porn. :monkey4

Yes, it definitely is art. The purpose of art is to challenge your preconceptions.

And Sondheim is usually acclaimed as being the best at creating thought provoking pieces that push the bounds of musical theater.
