Comic Movie Spoilers That Don't Make Me Miserable
Posted at 3:01 PM Jul 02, 2009

If you just started reading Topless Robot in the past few weeks, you'd be forgiven for thinking I have a policy to pre-hate all upcoming nerd-based movies. This isn't true; I just hate stupid ideas, and they seem to be coming fast and furious these days. So I'm glad to report two rumors/spoilers that cast the upcoming Spidey 4 and Iron Man 2 flicks in a more positive light. Spoilers ahoy, so be warned.

First up, if you were concerned about Mickey Rourke's Lord Humungus-esque Whiplash harness/outfit that got revealed a few months ago, Comic Book Resources says that's for an early scene in IM2, and Rourke will be wearing a more imposing, armored Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo-type outfit before the end. Now, I think that's a good thing. It's hard to take Rourke as a credible threat for Iron Man when his nipples are exposed.

The second rumor is very much a rumor, because I can't track down where it started, but i concerns Michael Papajohn's appearance in Spidey 4 which gave me a small nerd rage-aneurysm the other day. I just assumed that Raimi was going to re-re-retcon Uncle Ben's death, but someone somewhere has suggested that this might actually be Spidey villain the Chameleon in one of his disguises. I certainly hope that's the case, since it both ^^^^s with Spidey and doesn't muck up the already murky waters of movie Uncle Ben's murder.

So yes. Two things thaat make me look forward to two comic-based movies, although admittedly they're not confirmed. It is possible, people. It's just not very often.

With an attitude like this, SM4 is bound for greatness.

CANNES, France - Like other superhero fans, Sam Raimi agrees that "The Dark Knight" raised the bar for every comic-book movie to come.

Raimi figures it can only benefit the next chapter in his "Spider-Man" franchise, the first installment of which had been the top-grossing superhero flick until "The Dark Knight" blew it out of the record books last year.

"`The Dark Knight' was brilliant, and the audience seemed to love it, and I think it rightfully raises expectations for the other superhero pictures," Raimi said in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, where his horror tale "Drag Me to <nobr style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 100%;" id="itxt_nobr_3_0">Hell </nobr>" played. "Which is a great thing for everybody. For the filmmakers, for the audience."

Raimi said he expects to have the script for "Spider-Man 4" in hand within a few weeks. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is writing the screenplay for the film, due in theaters in May 2011.

The director said he has discussed the story with Tobey Maguire, who stars as Peter Parker and his alter ego Spidey.

"I'm interested in making the best of the `Spider-Man' movies ever, and Tobey's really excited," Raimi said. "I'm really looking forward to that collaboration."

A part has been written for Kirsten Dunst, and Raimi said he hopes she will return as the love of Peter's life, Mary Jane Watson.

After glowing reaction for the first two movies, critical response for "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Right after the third movie came out, Raimi was undecided about returning for more, but he said he did not like "thinking about a world where somebody else was making the Peter Parker story. I love that character."

Raimi said the break he took to make the smaller "Drag Me to Hell" has refreshed him for the return to Spidey, adding that he wanted to "take some of the more modest approach I've learned from this film into the `Spider-Man' film. I think it's exactly what it needs."

He also said he was game for the challenge of satisfying fans clamoring for bigger and better after "The Dark Knight."

"Yes, they have higher expectations," Raimi said. "The best thing I can do is be true to my character and work harder to bring him to the screen with as much truth and drama and a real conflict that means something to me. And have him grow in a realistic way to either overcome that conflict or be swallowed by it.

"I'm glad those expectations are up. I'm excited about that."

I'm not sure how I feel about people reaching for that Dark Knight bar. Batman is works best dark and gritty like that, but I prefer my comic book movies to have more of an Iron Man type template. But hopefully he just means he's reaching for that bar quality wise and won't try to get there by following the formula.

Ah crap, I can see it now, Spidey will be taking a trip to Hong Kong to bring back the Chinese Kingpin to the states.......:lol

Black Cat would be nice but Mysterio, Rhino, Vulture, Scorpion, Elecktro, Hobgoblin would be better.

Bruce Campbell would rock as the big M :rock

I agree with your pic but please, no more Mary Jane in peril.

C'mon, give us a Daredevil cameo!

Stupid studio seperations, bite me!

IDK if Sam Raimi will be that much of a good person to allow that, however theres more of a chance now that we've seen Tony Stark In Hulk, deleted scene in hulk with captain America in ice, Nick Fury in Iron Man, oh and for that cap scene in Hulk heres a few pics
