The G1 cartoons were great but the robot forms of the toys were all pretty weak, IMO. Robotech was the better of the two "transforming" series.

But Transformers had a Robotech guy, plus others including a gun, a radio, and a camera. Robotech were one trick ponies, because they were all jets, robots, or half-jet-half-robots. Therefore, Transformers were better.

I know this is about G1 and I love G1, but you cant really hate on Gobots either. They had there place in time even if they were inferior to G1 Trans.
Also watch the japanese version Machine Robo, much cooler than the US gobots. As far as gobots goes 3 words -

I'll totally agree on the BeastWars writing. The stories were fantastic, I never understood why people hated them. It was good stuff.
