I live in Northern Virginia, about an hour's drive from Washington, D.C., in Fauquier County. Recently on the Fauquier County Yahoo group, a local lady named Martha posted a request for new and used DVDs. She takes them with her when she visits Ft. Belvoir on Thanksgiving and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland on Christmas Day and distributes them to the wounded soldiers. I went through my DVD collection and culled the ones that I had repurchased on Blu-ray, and I'm going to donate the DVDs to the soldiers-- it came to a fairly large number. If you have any old DVDs that you no longer watch, you might want to consider doing the same thing at a local military hospital. Or, if you don't live near such an installation, I could arrange something with Martha where you could send your DVDs to her or me. It could mean a lot to the wounded soldiers who are recovering in the hospital! There is no tax deduction for this, just the feeling of doing a little something good for our wounded soldiers.

Also, there is an organization called DVDs4Vets that does this for veterans of all eras. Here's the website: https://dvds4vets.org/index.php
If you send your old or new DVDs to them, they will provide you with a receipt for tax purposes!

One note: Although Martha (the lady to whom I gave my DVDs to take to the military hospitals) didn't have any types of movies she'd reject (she said she's letting the soldiers make their own decisions about watching them) DVDs4Vets does request that you do not send:

1) Burned discs or bootleg discs (they receive donations of DVDs from movie studios and this would be a no-no)

2) Pornographic DVDs or "adult movies" (they are prohibited by V.A. hospital rules)

3) Horror movies or "anything scary" (their words-- I presume this is because a number of the vets may be suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, and this could cause problems with their treatment for the same)

Anything else I presume is fair game! :D
