Should a Hot Toys Dr. Manhatten figure be anatomically correct?

What a stupid poll. Would you ever ask if another figure should be anatomically correct? Dr Manhattan is what he is. You might as well ask 'should a Dr Manhattan figure accurately resemble the character'?

Re: Dr. Manhatten Poll

Expert? You give me too much credit. Merely a big fan :monkey1

I agree with you that any figure won't show the sausage and eggs as separate like in the illustration you posted. But it's not anatomically correct to present a formless plastic lump either. And FYI, in the movie they have said they balance his speedo wearing with shots of it all hanging out (there was a pretty funny section of an interview with the director, I think, where he discusses the meetings with the CGI team that were to determine exactly how endowed the good doctor should be. If I were Billy Cruddup, I'd be insisting that my contract state "VERY" :lol)

So no need to go to a sex shop to see a "realistic" blue wang - I'll be able to see one as soon as the movie is released.

oh ok.. see I wasn't aware that he WOULD BE naked in the live-action film. That's why I was asking how anatomically correct do you want/expect the figure to be, because I think my mock-up reflects how he generally looked in the graphic novel and I thought he would be presented in the film wearing a black speedo/underwear. If he's buck naked in the film, then I guess that would be an option to have the figure completely naked with a realistic HUMAN ^^^^^.

Thing is, I made that mock-up using the Triad EVO body, and on most sites they block out the genital area + have a disclaimer that certain elements of the figure are not suitable for people under 16.. even though imo, there's nothing vulgar or offensive about it. There's a definite shape there, but nothing over the top. Now imagine a realistic HUMAN schlong there, I think most sites would have problems promoting that.

I wasn't trying to be offensive aussieinnyc. :peace

It is a valid poll because he spends most of the book/movie nude.

Not only do I want him to be anatomically correct, I want it to taste anatomically correct!

The snozberries taste like snozberries!!

I don't know if I'll be getting this figure - probably only stick with my custom Rorshach as I'm trying to cut back on my collecting, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway. If I were to buy this figure, I would want him to be accurate with the book - meaning naked with some definition of all appendages (not just the way naked bodies look now). That's how he was in the graphic novel and that's how he should be as a figure. I don't think anyone had problems with him being naked in the novel. Because of ratings and what not -it's not surprising that they would have him wearing something to cover up some of the time in the movie - backside shots are still okay, so I imagine we will see plenty of those in the movie. It's just such a HUGE part of who he is that it would be wrong to not have the option to display him as he is meant to be. It would be nice if they threw in a suit or something for those who prefer to pose him clothed - that would be a win/win I think for everyone.

But... but... he has an exposed weiner. And that's, like, the worst thing ever!

I think its funny when people paint Machiko's nipples or on the recent Secret Service figure do the same and display them that and receive kudos and great job and that is how the character should be displayed (in Machiko's case) stating accuracy but when it comes to Manhattan's blue wang people all of a sudden are standoffish. Watchmen purists are just asking that the figure be true not only to the source but to the film which these figures are based nothing more and in reality they will probably include the suit so if you aren't comfortable with it you can cover it up. We're just asking that it be there not that anyone do anything to it because its included. :lol

I have a serious question. If this where the way Dr. Manhatten were originally drawn in the Watchmen series:

Would wanting the figure fully nude and anatomically correct be an issue? Is it the blue wang that people have a problem with or the nudity?

The nudity. I don't display any nude figures in my house because I'm not the only one that lives in my world.

edit: Just to be clear. I don't believe there is anything wrong with nudity. Especially when it comes to art. I just wouldn't display it in my house because I'm not the only one that lives there, and I have people over all the time.

Nah, no offense taken at all.

I was wondering what body you used. What I find funny is, I think it's the Triad EVA body, the naked female version is far more graphic/accurate than the male one. The female one has a definite...(I'm struggling to complete this sentence without being graphic and crude, so let's just leave it at, "the female is visually anatomically correct"!) I totally agree with you that, due to retailer squirmishness, they wouldn't go any more realistic than what you mocked-up (if that), was just saying that - looking at the graphic novel - the vague plastic lump needed more definition if you were to call it "anatomically correct". :naughty:banana:naughty

Of course he should be "correct". It isn't like Manhattan is going about destroying the Viet Cong with a huge erection and a maniacal grin... and I'm sure HT would include a pair of speedos so the prudish can spare themselves.

Speaking of which, maybe you should slightly edit the thread title Buttmunch to "protect" those that fear Dr. M's Mighty Blueness from potentially offending imagery?

Heh, Americans....

Yeah, that's it, it's totally an American thing.

I think it's the former, personally. I think in general the female body is viewed (even when fully nude) as ok as long as you don't see the inside of the vagina. Think about it: The only difference between Playboy (which is seen as art) and like Penthouse and certain features in Hustler (which are usually seen as smut) is that one has naked women and one has naked women spread eagle. That's usually the only thing that seperates "art" from "porn/smut" when it comes to women being nude.

Think about it: Did you see anyone complaining about the various versions of Eve from Species? Because I didn't. And like aussieinnyc pointed out, I've seen people comment on the new Triad EVO body but I haven't seen anyone really care about the EVA body which IS more graphic. So there is definitely a double standard when it comes to nudity.

Look at movies. You can easily find a movie on HBO, SHO, Cinemax that shows completely nude women. But you'd be hard pressed to find as many films showing full frontal nudity of a man. So imo it is a social taboo.
