Isn't Melissa McCarthy being mentioned as playing Ursula?

I have no idea who this Ariel actress is at all, never seen what she has been in previously.

Because he said the word "sistahs?" I don't think that instantly makes him a racist. He was very clear that he just wanted the source material respected.

She's some musician who thinks she should be a movie sta.. (cough)... actress.

I've taken issue with a bit of ethnic recasting (like how some took issue with Johansson in Ghost in the Shell but, strangely not with this movie), mostly for cultural appropriation (making Achilles black in that BBC abomination, casting Elba as Heimdall aka "the whitest of the gods" in Thor) but I don't really mind that a Disney adaption of a Disney animated film that's adapted from a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale has some black fish people.
Though, you got to admit there's a purposeful reason that they cast Ariel as a different ethnicity, because being white is a problem for some insane people now a days and apparently, black people have no fairy tales of their own.

Always disgusting to see the "if you don't support pandering through tokenized characters you're racist/Nazi" crowd in action, even in this very thread.

Never mind that we'd be just as annoyed by white characters in Wakanda or AKIRA or if they'd made Ariel a male. Nope. The all important narrative that everyone who simply wants the source material respected is a white supremacist is all that matters.

White people are expected to clap and keep their mouths shut now a days every time something like this comes about. And those that do speak out are "racist". There are just as many black people out there who get annoyed over this type of thing as well. Those traitorous "Uncle Tom's".... There are plenty of unhappy black people and women posting vids on YouTube over race and gender swapping, and the new movement of strong women leading dumb men.

Disney is only doing this to pander to certain groups. They are a business 1st. It's the thing to do today. This is now the norm. Every time a new property is explored or comes to the big/small screen, the 1st thing I think of is "which character will now be black (race swap) or a women (gender swap)". We (white people) need to accept this, and can't speak out when we disagree or we will be "labeled" as something negative.

I'm sure she will be a great Arial. In the article I read, someone in the comments made a great point.. Will there now be 2 different Arials walking around the parks in costume and at all the Princess signings? One white and one black?

I don't really care as I have yet to even see one live action Disney translation. Disney has run out of ideas, so they are just using old stories to make money yet again off of. I don't even get The Lion King. The whole idea is to translate classic animated tales into live action. The Lion King is all cgi. No real animals at all. I do not enjoy seeing talking animals that look real in any movie. Other than maybe Dr Doolittle. But that's the whole premise...

But that's just me. I will always prefer the original animated stories.

I *highly* recommend catching the new Pete's Dragon. Not a retread of the original at all and *far* superior not only to the original PD but all the other recent Disney remakes. It's a shame that such a fresh approach was a "one and done" and now they seem to be content simply redoing the cartoons largely shot for shot.

As for the Little Mermaid race swap, Hollywood is just getting weird with this "white redheads must be black" trend. Annie remake, MCU Spider-Man "MJ", and now Ariel. I don't buy for one second that they simply "picked the most talented actress for the role." Yeah right. Maybe if they chose some superstar like Rihanna or something. I do believe that Michael Clarke Duncan was thought to be the "best" Kingpin at the time and that SLJ was thought to be the most badass Nick Fury. Because those guys are mother effing Michael Clarke Duncan and Sam Freaking Jackson! But an absolute unknown black actress to play an iconic white redhead? Text book tokenization. Which is very lame IMO.

I totally forgot about that!! I actually did watch Pete's Dragon on Netflix... :lol I always seem to forget that Pete's Dragon was a Disney thing. I always get it confused with "Puff The Magic Dragon".
