Ultramarine "Dominus" destroys a minor chaos demon with bolt pistol and chainsword on an arid alien world. This is one of those projects where I had the idea for awhile (my awesome custom Space Marine deserved, rather NEEDED a base), but it didn't "click" until I had a few inspiring ingredients. Those ended up being the base itself - the bottom of an old DVD rack, and the "demon" - an old beat up McFarlane Malebolgia figure from Spawn Series 23: Mutations. I was aware that the Malebolgia figure was out of scale (read: not 1:6th), HOWEVER, what if it was chopped up? You'd never really know how large it was, just a decapitated head (which is much larger than the Space Marine's) and a severed arm.
Yesterday while shopping, I hit the local hobby store and stumbled across this liquid to make water for dioramas. I figured couldn't I add some red food coloring to make blood? HELL YEAH. The rest moved VERY quickly - finished in a day in about 7 hours - grinning from ear to ear all the while at how friggin' badass it was coming out. I chisled out shallow trenches for the blood after screwing down the demon head and arm from below. I literally sawed the Maelbolgia figure in half, removed his tongue from the top of his head and placed it lolling out of his mouth. The upper "mouth" I pooled with the water/blood liquid to give the illusion that it got brained by the Space Marine's bolt pistol - most likely after being decapitated (a "just in case it wasn't dead" shot).
The bones around the base are some old skulls I had around and some other misc. stuff from my parts bin. I actually went out looking for some more skulls, but those damn things are impossible to find EXCEPT around Halloween. Good ones at least. I found some crappy skeletons that I used for the arm bones, etc. Anyways, it didn't matter what I put around the base because I envisioned painting it all one color (bone white) anyways for a cool bio-mech, Giger-like look. I may weather it some later on, but I don't want it to distract from the busy base.
The mushrooms are from an old 8" Sideshow Moleman figure. I've been dying to use them for SOMETHING, and while I know shrooms do not grow in the desert, this is a funky alien world, so why the hell not.
Rest is two baggies of hobby sand/ rocks. I could've used some dirt from outside, but with all the damn snow lately, I didn't want to bother with it.
