Important Precautionary Advice Regarding Cell Phone Use

An international expert panel of pathologists, oncologists and public health specialists recently declared that electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones should be considered a potential human health risk (see The Case for Precaution in Cell Phone Use, attached). To date, a number of countries including France, Germany and India have issued recommendations that exposure to electromagnetic fields should be limited. In addition, Toronto's Department of Public Health is advising teenagers and young children to limit their use of cell phones, to avoid potential health risks.

More definitive data that cover the health effects from prolonged cell phone use have been compiled by the World Health Organization, International Agency for Research on Cancer. However, publication has been delayed for two years. In anticipation of release of the WHO report, the attached prudent and simple precautions, intended to promote precautionary efforts to reduce exposures to cell phone electromagnetic radiation, have been reviewed by UPCI experts in neuro-oncology, epidemiology, neurosurgery and the Center for Environmental Oncology.

For more in-depth information on this subject, please see the complete article (pdf file, 100kb) Practical Advice to Limit Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted from Cell Phones

1. Do not allow children to use a cell phone, except for emergencies. The developing organs of a fetus or child are the most likely to be sensitive to any possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields.

2. While communicating using your cell phone, try to keep the cell phone away from the body as much as possible. The amplitude of the electromagnetic field is one fourth the strength at a distance of two inches and fifty times lower at three feet. Whenever possible, use the speaker-phone mode or a wireless Bluetooth headset, which has less than 1/100th of the electromagnetic emission of a normal cell phone. Use of a hands-free ear piece attachment may also reduce exposures.

3. Avoid using your cell phone in places, like a bus, where you can passively expose others to your phone's electromagnetic fields.

4. Avoid carrying your cell phone on your body at all times. Do not keep it near your body at night such as under the pillow or on a bedside table, particularly if pregnant. You can also put it on "flight" or "off-line" mode, which stops electromagnetic emissions.

5. If you must carry your cell phone on you, make sure that the keypad is positioned toward your body and the back is positioned toward the outside so that the transmitted electromagnetic fields move away from your rather than through you.

6. Only use your cell phone to establish contact or for conversations lasting a few minutes, as the biological effects are directly related to the duration of exposure. For longer conversations, use a land line with a corded phone, not a cordless phone, which uses electromagnetic emitting technology similar to that of cell phones.

7. Switch sides regularly while communicating on your cell phone to spread out your exposure. Before putting your cell phone to the ear, wait until your correspondent has picked up. This limits the power of the electromagnetic field emitted near your ear and the duration of your exposure.

8. Avoid using your cell phone when the signal is weak or when moving at high speed, such as in a car or train, as this automatically increases power to a maximum as the phone repeatedly attempts to connect to a new relay antenna.

9. When possible, communicate via text messaging rather than making a call, limiting the duration of exposure and the proximity to the body.

10. Choose a device with the lowest SAR possible (SAR = Specific Absorption Rate, which is a measure of the strength of the magnetic field absorbed by the body). SAR ratings of contemporary phones by different manufacturers are available by searching for "sar ratings cell phones" on the internet.

personally i dont have a cell phone or ever plan on having one. people think im strange. i just dont need to talk to people that bad and frankly sometimes i dont wanna talk to anybody. i dont really think a cell phone is any worse than a regular phone. its just so many people use their cell phones all day long. you cant tell me that isnt gonna do any damage.

Ditto.. plus it's an extra charge I don't need to pay into each month.

If they are basing it off of EMF emission its not crap but its not proven either. If EMF's were truly dangerous they would have to take down all the high rise power lines because they give off the same thing. They build developements right underneath power lines(or close to it.) I did a fair amount of research before building where I did and I found no evidence that EMF exposure can lead to anything bad. Nothing wrong with being cautious at all, but they have debated EMF for years....

I got more important things to concern my every day life than the possible dangers of using a cell phone.

(CNN) -- Keeping a cell phone on talk mode in a pocket can decrease sperm quality, according to new research from the Cleveland Clinic.

<!-- /PURGE: /2008/HEALTH/conditions/09/18/cellphone.sperm/art.cell.phone.sperm.ap.jpg --> <!--endclickprintexclude--> "We believe that these devices are used because we consider them very safe, but it could cause harmful effects due to the proximity of the phones and the exposure that they are causing to the gonads," says lead researcher Ashok Agarwal, the Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine.
In the small study, Agarwal's team took semen samples from 32 men and brought them to the lab. Each man's sample was placed into small, conical tubes and divided into two parts: a test group and a control group. The control group was unexposed to cell phone emissions, but kept under the same conditions and temperature as the test group.
The semen in the test group was placed 2.5 centimeters from an 850 MHz cell phone in talk mode for 1 hour. Researchers say that 850 MHz is the most commonly used frequency.
They used the measurement of 2.5 centimeters to mimic the distance between the trouser pocket and the testes. Agarwal reasoned that many men keep their active cell phones in their pants pocket while talking on their headsets.
<!--startclickprintexclude--> Don't Miss

<!--endclickprintexclude--> Overall, researchers found an increase in oxidative stress such as a significant increase in free radicals and oxidants and a decrease in antioxidants. Agarwal says that equals a decrease in sperm's quality, including motility and viability. Evidence of oxidative stress can appear under other conditions, including exposure to certain environmental pollutants or infections in the urinary genital tract.
"On average, there was an 85 percent increase in the amount of free radicals for all the subjects in the study. Free radicals have been linked to a variety of diseases in humans including cancer," said Agarwal. Free radicals have been linked to decreased sperm quality in previous studies.
However, the study does have major limitations, he acknowledged, such as the small sample size. It also was conducted in a lab and so cannot account for the protection a human body might offer, such as layers of skin, bone and tissue. Agarwal is in the early stages of further research that can model the human body's role in protecting from radio-frequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones.
Agarwal also admits that there is no clear explanation of this demonstrated effect, but he shared some of his theories. "Perhaps the cell phone radiation is able to affect the gonads through a thermal effect thereby increasing the temperature of the testes and causing damaging effects in the sperm cell."
In a previous study, Agarwal and his team found that men who used their cell phones more than four hours a day had significantly lower sperm quality than those who used their cell phones for less time. Those findings were based on self-reported data from 361 subjects.
While representatives from the cell phone industry had not yet reviewed the latest study, they were careful not to give this study much merit. "The weight of the published scientific evidence, in addition to the opinion of global health organizations, shows that there is no link between wireless usage and adverse health effects," said Joe Farren, a spokesman for the CTIA-the Wireless Association.
"We support good science and always have," he said. "It's important to look at studies that are peer-reviewed and published in leading journals and to listen to the experts."
Agarwal emphasized that it is far too early for men to start changing cell phone carrying habits, noting that his own cell phone was in his pocket as he talked to CNN.
"Our study has not provided proof that you should stop putting cell phones in your pocket. There are many things that need to be proven before we get to that stage," he said.

all i know is that within 20 minutes of Loki's place, there is CIA and NSA headquarters and a BIG ASS satellite dish (across the street from the hotel we stayed at :huh).

they're listening...:D :lol

I have a cellphone that my mother pays for because she wants to be able to get ahold of me at any given time. I might use 3 minutes a month. It is nice to have in case of emergencies though.

I use mine to talk to my cousin long distance. Saves alot of money so we don't even need a long distance phone plan. I also like having it for emergencies. Once I broke down a good ten or so miles (maybe more) from the closest place I could use a phone. That would have been a horrible walk, but since I had my cell phone it posed no problems.

In smaller font at the end of the article:

Dr. Christopher Moertel, head of the University of Minnesota's brain tumor program, is a skeptic of cell phone and brain cancer links. He says that cell phones don't emit the type of radiation known to cause the DNA damage that leads to cancer.

Dr. Moertel thinks there's no need to panic. "If you have something that's one in a million... or one in 200-thousand.. and you make it five times more likely... so now it's five in a million.. is that enough to change your behaviors?" asks Dr. Moertel.

He was also on the news here and he's just like it states a skeptic. He also said "if this comes to be true" (which it's still in the study's) His own kids have taken to text messaging and that gives him some degree of comfort.

Better safe than sorry IMO. They emit radiation plain and simple, which kind don't matter to me. I have not changed my behaviors but i am watching this ^^^^ closely.

You DON'T TAKE A CHANCE WITH YOUR CHILDREN IMO.

"Research predicts an epidemic later on"

No way my daughter is using one. Too many people don't want to hear it cause it inconveniences them.(i hope in the future they can make the phones as safe as possible more than they are now)

People have been told that crack kills since the 80's and there are still people trying crack. So telling people to stop using a cell phone is like telling a priest to stop kneeling in prayer because he will get arthritic knees. Noone will listen, especially since they tell us everything will eventually kill us. I am not trying to downplay the potential dangers here but people will always do what they want no matter what study is published. And what about the cell phone towers that are everywhere. They toss a new one up every day. They have to be emitting crazy amounts of radiation with the amount of cell phones out there.

Yup. And we just go about our daily lives and play with the toys they give us.

You're right were all doomed no matter what!

Wasn't there a big fear of Microwaves causing cancer or something some number of years ago? I figure if I live my life trying to avoid everything that is bad for me it'll be stressful and dull and I could still die prematurely of any number of things. But maybe that's a bad way to look at the world.

I agree with the fact that ya only live once don't be a ^^^^^. But when it comes to kids all bets are off for me.

Kinda adds new meaning to the phrase, "she'll talk your ear off", and your brain out too, iffen you don't hang up.

Microwaves need to be sealed correctly or the leakage can do you damage. How many people get their microwaves tested? Be sure to keep your distance or you may be rendered technically neutered.

I hate phones, so I despise cell phones. I wont have one. I can see it becoming like cigarettes down the track, and we'll be suing manufacturers for our health problems. Of course they'll plead that they didn't know, due to test results being so wide and varied. Even electrical radiation is known to cause ill health. Be aware of where your electricity box is located, you don't want it near your bedroom, for instance, because you spend so much time there. Speaking of which, be sure to turn your electric blankets off before you get into bed. Watch out for x-rays. Operators don't wear lead aprons for no reason. We all know about how dangerous the sun can be, so no use even bringing that up.

The world is a dangerous place, being aware just adds to anxiety. There's not much that can be done, just try to minimise it where you can, and try and be sensible, as far as that's possible.
