I thought Captain America had chain mail under his shirt. That doesn't look like chain mail. It looks like scales made of leather or vinyl. I realize that Cap's shirt is usually drawn with little half circles pointing down, but that is to emulate the chain mail, so that it is easier to draw when you are drawing a lot of pictures in a comic book. As I recall, according to The Marvel Universe, it's chain mail.
