The further away you get the better it looks, not in a bad way - the illusion of the flames being real holds better at a moderate distance. It'll look great in a detolf.

My guess would be that they are trying to give a nod to the comic version. He does actually have the ninja kunai on his chains in the comics, and for anybody wondering his comics are awesome.

1. Relax, it's a round spike like in the movie
2. Scorpion uses chains (like Ghost Rider) instead of classic ropes (like ninja) only in the rebooted MK (since 2011)
