Curse of the Black Pearl.

I get the other films, because those are popular "classics", but Pirates? Really?

I like COTBP a lot, but to call it a perfect movie is a bit much. I'm sure there are plenty of flaws, but the most noticeable and obvious ones are when Jack finds out that the pirates were cursed, because the film shows there's a full moon, and we see the pirate's hand turn to bone in front of Jack, but at the same time that's happening, Elizabeth was being escorted by the pirates...yet she doesn't find out they are skeletons until much later and the film makes a big deal about it. Also, the guy with the loose eye was burned by Elizabeth and he seemed to feel pain...yet later Barbosa claims that they can't feel anything, not the warmth of a woman's flesh or taste food.

Also, when Elizabeth meets Barbosa, she threatens to drop the coin in the water....and the pirate act scared like...OMG...if we lose the coin we'll never get rid of the curse...yet, the movie shows that they can walk under water because they are immortal, so Elizabeth's threat and scene are pointless. The ship wasn't even moving, it was stationary so it would be very easy for them to find the coin. Also, the movie shows that if the coin touches the ocean water, it sends a signal to the cursed pirates, so they can always find it. That's how they found Elizabeth's location to begin with.

And that's just the first 20 minutes of the film. I'm sure there are more issues, other than the running time, which is a bit long.

All fair points, but with COTBP the filmmakers were really lucky that it turned out to be such a well-received success. Pirates weren't really a "cool" thing back when COTBP came out and if I recall correctly it was expected that the film would be a total disaster.

I guess I tend to go rather soft on Pirates because, unlike the majority of the world, I've never been a huge geek over SW, Matrix, DH, etc. When I was a (younger) kid I never wanted to be a space-adventurer or a superhero - I wanted to be a pirate. :lol

At the end of the day I think COTBP succeed in coming about as close to perfect as a movie made in 2003 could come. No movie has ever received a solid 10/10 from me.

The biggest WTF thing about COTBP is the fact that the pirates are IMORTAL...yet they spent their time....years...looking for the coins? They could have conquered the British Empire first and use them to look for Aztec gold. :lol

Oh Hell yeah! Dead Men Tell No Tales was far from perfect, but seeing it for the first time felt really nostalgic for me being a longtime PotC fan and it was miles better than OST. Plus it had a surprisingly fully dimensional villain in Salazar.

Oh yeah, much better than OST. In fact, you can watch the first 3 films and then watch DMTNT as a direct continuation of the story, 20 years later. Man, Jack is 20 years older in the last film :lol

"Black Pearl" inconsistencies are the same as, say, Luke and Han in stormtrooper gear yet somehow having their original clothing still under the armor, including boots.... yet Han still lost his holster... just to keep it a "little real". :)

There's no truly perfect film. But I'd put the first Pirates up with the other classics I mentioned. Perhaps it hasn't had enough time to become the classic that, for example, Raiders is... but it will be for a new generation that grows up on it.

Barbossa's crew was undead but not indestructible. Will put the grenades in the one pirate's torso when he was a skeleton then pushed him out of the moonlight to turn him back into a "human" preventing him from pulling the grenades out of his ribcage. They blew him up and then he was never seen again suggesting that they could indeed be "killed" if the right methods were used.

Well Thor really isn't all that mighty. I have not been following the thread but it seems that conversations have shifted to some older DC CBM's and POTC.

Yeah, this movie was pretty forgettable. I think should revisit the POTC films soon.

I haven't forgotten Ragnarok. I wouldn't mind seeing it again but after 3 theater views figure that's enough:cool:. Looking forward to owning it so I can pause/rewind and all that.

And I need HT to release a Loki to go with my Roadworn Thor.

I'm still surprised at how much I liked this film - I dunno, I just wasn't expecting to. Guess I felt that way about Antman and Homecoming also. That they'd be OK, not something I really enjoy.

Way back felt the same way about Ironman....ps. I like all the POTC movies too. HT Jack Sparrow is on order - guess I had better take a look at my POs.:horror

Ragnarok is far from forgettable for me but the JL thread is fayaaa [emoji91] [emoji23]

LOL that's the funny thing when something's good - nitpicks/logic lapses/CGI etc. aside, guess there's not much to say. Marvel took another risk and scored big time.

I mean, I can appreciate that this isn't the Thor some folks wanted. I was kinda floored since Ragnarok was supposed to be some sort of big lead into IW.:dunnoBut I really like this movie. IMO GOTG2 had some good stuff (Ego) but to me it felt like it was straining. Some coasting on good will from GOTG1.

Ragnarok just romps along, like some crazy carnival - but IMO it's got some nice serious moments too.

Re JL - well - IMO as folks have pointed out, Marvel cares about its properties. Some directors have complained about the Marvel oversight but IMO the MCU directors DO put their own stamp on things - (and look what happened when Whedon was allowed to keep that Ultron farmhouse scene in - I hate that scene. I hate that someone's home/family was even considered as a safehouse - are you kidding, you don't bring that kind of work home.:thwak)

But Ultron is a cohesive story w. IMO lots of good moments too. + Vision, SW, Pietro...and I like a lot of Ultron's (the entity) moments. Like the last scene when Vision is talking to Ultron.

Re JL just don't know what WB was thinking to try for a team movie that soon:cuckoo:. I don't get it. Even re CW, the Marvel writers talk about debating whether to do it - whether there were enough characters on the board - point is, they THOUGHT about it. And by CW audiences had been introduced (in a very logical, natural way that fit the story) to BP; audiences knew all the other characters.

IMO WB is getting off lightly for doin' something so lame. A whole stable of DC characters and instead they try to force an IW competition.:(
I think fans will be reeling from the multi-million dollar stupidity of it for a while. "Sometimes the best you can do is to start over".

You liked it that much? Good for you. I think the movie was entertaining, albeit at the further expense of Thor. I think there are aspects of the MCU which are great, but here the humor aspect was a handicap, IMO.

Finally got to see this today. Enjoy it a lot. I thought it had a tad too much humor in it, but it was still a good time. Loved the Immigrant Song in it!! :yess:

Already have it on order through Zavvi. :)

I love that this has become the "Talk about anything but Thor 3" thread :lol

Sure Thor has been out for awhile but this started after it was out for like 5 days :lol

Movies I absolutely hated opening night:

Predator 2, Alien 3, Conan 2, Escape from LA, Robocop 2, Die Hard 2, Indy Last Crusade, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, B&R, Force Awakens.

The ones from that list that I have forgiven and come to appreciate and enjoy now:

Batman Returns
Indy Last Crusade
B&R
Force Awakens

Oh man Jye.. You forgive B&R but not Alien 3.. What the hell dude :lol

Man movies I hated upon first viewing...

#1 is without question the 1998 Godzilla - That movie caused so many negative emotions in me I can't even begin to explain it.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Batman and Robin
Die Hard 5
Sausage Party
The 5th Element

I am sure I can think of some more.. I see a lot of horror movies so I know they could make my list easily..

I have not forgiven any of the films above :lol

I did. Which really surprised me. A combination of things - IMO truly funny, excellent cast, great performances, some surprisingly poignant moments here and there, well done tie-ins to the Avengers and nice handling of Bruce Banner's absence from Earth, great DS scene, IMO great world building on Sakaar, cheeky humor (that bit when Thor is going to meet the Grandmaster:lol), amazing use of design and color.

But I can fully appreciate that this was not a Thor some folks wanted or expected to see. Glad I read spoilers and reviews ahead of time or I would have been WTF. But IMO while not flawless it's a well-done movie - narrative, editing, cast, script, cast chemistry. IMO Taika Waititi knows his stuff under all that playing around in interviews.

Guys! Stop derailing the thread :lol
