Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

Thanks...I'm working on the overall look, that is, as ever said, the most important detail for me. After that I can put my attention on a lot of little details...comments are welcome...

Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

Vaders are tough. I've started on my ANH Vader... looking over your great pics.

Like Fett, he's a very tough character to get looking "just right."

Just put some of the parts on for my ANH Vader - haven't started modding or painting (and looks like shoulder bell fell off.) Leg armor is just sitting on the boot. Most is Kaiyodo. Didn't like Kaiyodo codpiece - have a HT ANH cod on the way, but may use that for ESB Vader. I will tweak that SSC ANH codpiece.

I feel like most of the HT parts are just a bit oversized for a 13" to 13 1/4" Vader (that's the height I'm shooting for) seems like it really wants to be over 13 1/2" tall

The other Vader has been my cheapo practice fig - it's got a HT jumpsuit, SSC gloves/codpiece and Hurricane helmet, but rest just Hasbro (chestbox is cast of SSC one.) Used that fig to test a few things, will become my ROTJ Vader.

It must be the camera lens that makes ROTJ Vader look like he's leaning tower of Pisa.:lol

Great looking wip here. This is what I dream for this thread. Thanks TaliBane for sharing.

Surely ht parts are a bit oversizedif you are going for 13 - 13 1/4 ". But I think that you can hide most of the evidence with the right futz.
Other important detail is the fabric. The thickness of your hasbro inner robe look more in scale than the more expensive one on your anh vader. But this is where I put my attention for my vader.
Hope to see other picture and comment about what you are doing... I'm sure you are doing something that you will love!!

Funny you say that - I just bought an extra Hasbro cape because it drapes quite nicely. The HT RO inner robe I'm using is pretty thick because of all the pleats and also it is double fabric (feels more "quality," but gets very thick.) With the HT RO cape over it, I'm worried it's getting too thick. His whole upper body seems too "fat" and big. The Hasbro cape is just a single layer, which can actually be futzed.

I just did a a rough set-up for my ESB Vader using the HT RO chest armor and it seems so big (compared to Kaiyodo, which seems most accurate from sculpt perspective.) Yet the RO chest armor is SMALLER than the HT ANH chest armor.:horror

I have a whole folder of reference pics showing Vader's height next to a lot of characters and people and he really isn't as tall as everyone seems to think (or as figures always make him.) I have an interesting pic someone posted of all the most recent Vaders side by side - SSC ANH, SSC ROTJ, HT ANH and HT RO and what's interesting is the HT figs are so tall to me, yet the SSC figs were even taller. Seems like the HT ANH was around 14".

It's so hard to control the height. Once you get an undershirt, pleather jumpsuit, chest armor, inner robe and cape on, it can add close to 1/2" to vertical height. I just keep dremeling the body down.:lol

Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

I've tryed a lot of parts ss, ht, hasbro, even ht anh chest armour, now is mr H modified kaiyodo, and I think that, even if a bit oversized somethig of ht and ss can work if correctly mixed with kaiyodo. Ht anh chest box works fine to me for example. RO one is bigger and I don't know.
My anh vader is 33,7 cm, that is exatly 13 1/4 inch. But remember to considerate all the measurement like in a tailored dress. Shoulder and chest's whidth , the abdomen, the proportion between legs and torso. I've spent hours on the thickness of the shoulder and the shape of the abdomen , fundamental for the side silhouette.
Sorry for my english, hard to me to explain something of too articoulated , but funny to try.
Very interesting to see your improvements...

Yeah, I think 13 1/4" is pretty much spot-on. Vader really is not huge at all if you look at the ref pics - just a tall guy, not a giant.

The HT helmet is bigger than the Kaiyodo, but it does mix in okay. For my ANH and ESB Vaders I'm using a HT and a car air freshner helmet. Lot of work on the air freshner one obviously.

The mesh behind the teeth on the HT helemt really bugs me. I'm worried I'm going to have to tear the teeth out and redo them.:horror:lol

Because this one was cheapo practice Vader (he was a bit over $100 all up,) I didn't spend long on him, but I did try to pad the chest a bit. He's just on a very old Dragon body. That cast of the chestbox turned out to be a total pain to paint (but hey, it was free.):rotfl

Nice work Sturtrup, Talibane. :)

Thanks.:hi5: I was studying some svaed pics of your ANH Vader and what you did with the helmet in terms of making it closer to ANH onscreen Vader.

My cheapo practice Vader is pretty much done, but wow - had no idea Vaders were this tough to get looking "just right.":lol

Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

I'm afraid that if you go for 13"1/4 and if you keep unaltered the width of the kaiyodo chest armour, ht and airfreshener helmet could be huge, not like lord helmet, but noticeably huge.

Nice work Sturtrup, Talibane. :)
Thanks Master Chaka, your comments are always appreciated and precious, don't mind to be critical.

Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

This looks really flipping good. How does it look next to a HT Trooper? How tall?

Re: Sturtrup Custom Vader - esb first pictures -

Great Vaders guys. They look awesome as is now...........when you finish with the finer details.........:google

What is everyone using for ESB gloves? I have some sideshow deluxe which are too large, medicom which are too small. Picked up a few of the sideshow tie pilot gloves and ideally I'd hope to Recast/ resculpt some lines on the wrist/ forearm.

Here's my Vader atm

Is your empire Vader’s cape/tunic the one that your mother in law made? Also, which shoulder armor are you using?

Yes, it's made with different fabric than anh one. Shoulder armour is Hurricane!
