Just ordered, this guy looks great. Yeah the prototype looked awesome, but that was largely because of the excellent paint job on it. But like Leia's prototype, that couldn't be matched on production. We should all be so lucky to have JC Hong paint our figures lol.

I think it looks good. Nice shots eamon! I would be happy to have this in my display.

I don't think this is a new sculpt. The main bone of contention for those who are finding serious fault with the production sculpt is the lips. If you look carefully at the proto, you can see that there is a "lip ridge" that is painted differently than the actual lip, and differently from the area just above the lip line. On the production piece, that entire area seems to have been taken as lip by the factory painters. I think the culprit here is the factory painters failing to follow the JC Hong paint master instructions closely enough (as usual).

In the photos above, I included a shot that I think shows that flawed or not, the production sculpt CAN look like Boyega. But I'm not sure what that proves.... We're not looking for a sculpt of Boyega in his private life or in a publicity still. We want a sculpt of Finn...as he appeared in TFA. The lip lapse is major fail on this sculpt...... BUT, look at the bottom compare of the proto and the production sculpts. If you cover the lips, I think it's clear that (also as usual) the sculpt was not switched or tweaked in the production stage. The paint is the let down (have I said "as usual" yet?).

Verdict. I don't love it, but I think it will work. All of this detail is, of course, blown up and accentuated on our tablets and computer screens. In 1/6, I'm willing to bet he will display fine. Just not the home run we were hoping for. He looks several steps better in the latest in hand shots. Here's hoping we get a toned down intensity sculpt somewhere down the line...

The shape of the right ear is very different (just focus on the outer fold). There are other more subtle differences too but that makes it hard for me to understand how folks can think it comes down to paint and that it's the same sculpt. There are also several more subtle changes but that one seems pretty clear to me.

Well, running a mold off of a sculpted head is not cloning. There are always going to be some subtle changes born of that process, and more when you have a run of so many units per mold.

I could be wrong, though. I just think it far more rare than we generally think that they make changes to these sculpts between proto and production...and when they do, I think the changes are reasonably dramatic, like Han V1 vs Han V2.

Could be.... The noses also look quite different, but I guess that could be angle/lighting.

I think you're right with the nose (and also the hair line at the front top, and definitely the ear as well) are completely different. The lighting in those shots couldn't change those things that dramatically.

You're the first person I've seen mention the hairline, surprisingly, because that's one of the demonstrable differences to me. The front hairline on the production sculpt is discernibly rounder than the proto sculpt, which I feel the proto sculpt in this respect is more accurate.

They didn't just change his lips and hairline, but they furrowed his eyebrow. They made him angry. Its obvious someone thought, well if he has the lightsaber he should be in a 'Battle mode' Unlike the prototype which had more of a docile expression. However I feel it did a much better job of capturing the personality of the character. Although hes surrounded by violence, hes not a violent person. He was very conflicted. Finn was torn between his loyalty to the First Order and his loyalty to Rey. When he fights TR-8R his expression is uncertain, not only because he was facing a former ally but also because it was his first time wielding the lightsaber.

The prototype sculpt had a look of contemplation which reminded me of a Jedi, being calm in the midst of battle, focused on his task and not allowing emotion to overwhelm him. Whereas the final product has a look of disdain, almost rage. Which I don't associate with this character.

Thoughtful and appropriate response. I would have preferred a different sculpt altogether, though--one with some real personality. Collectors care so much about accurate outfits and accessories, but are somehow fine with figures that reflect none of the character's performance or emotion. Almost everything these days is neutral or some bland variation on neutral. Just once, give us a real expression. Don't get me wrong, I think neutral/stoic can work—it works very well on the Mark 43 1/4-scale, which you can just imagine sizing up a foe or looking out over battlefield wreckage. But for a character like Finn, who I mostly think of as talking, running and shouting, doing something with his face, it doesn't work.

This :clap:lecture:goodpost::exactly:

I don't think I agree with the furrowed brow or hairline changes in terms of a new sculpt. There no doubt that his expression has been intensified, but again a bit of shading and/or shadow between the eyes will do that. Take a look:

There's really not much difference here that isn't lighting and paint.

I'm not saying for certain obviously. But look what Jazz was able to accomplish with the Han sculpt with a new paint job. The images above only look different because of some highlights and lighting. Look at the shots above again. The furrowed accents in the brow line are present in both pics. But on the production piece they are accentuated by the intense light.

I was one who would have sworn when the first production piece was shown that this was a new and vastly different sculpt. I posted that it was an easy cancel for me. But since then I've tried to take a new objective look, and no one was more surprised by my new conclusion than me....
