Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

James Cameron has entered George Lucas territory. When your movies gross billions of dollars and people all over the world recognize your work, you can pretty much do whatever the ---- you want. The critics and naysayers be damned.

Power corrupts. And absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Still, just because someone has evolved into an unreasonable presence doesn't mean the works that elevated them to this state should be discounted!

Sure, Aliens has less Sexual tension (the scary rape kind, not the fun to release kind). You might say it it kind of had to be dropped once the theme of complete and total gender equality was added in Aliens. Can't have a gender equal military fighting force with the idea everyone is equally capable if a constant sexual danger was present.

Overall I wouldn't say the toned down sexual themes and 'mystery' giving way to 'pulse pounding action' are such bad things. I don't understand why everyone feels this was a 'weakness' in Aliens. It was a trade off for something else that was fun and awesome.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Must watch Prometheus again. It was an atmospheric film, I would give it that.

No. You don't give it anything. The movie it was supposed to be, where the script made sense and crucial explanatory contexts weren't left on the cutting room floor... that'd be worth watching. Prometheus as we saw it was a steaming pile of doo doo. And anyone who says otherwise is just having a lend. They say it with a straight face, but they're really joking, even if they think they're serious. Specially Vintij. You can't trust Australians as far as you can throw 'em.

I know it has some.. loose ends :lol.. but so what.

I dig it. Lots to like. :)

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I'm not going to get dragged into a debate about Prometheus - you either like it, or you don't. :lol

It'll be interesting to see where they take the second one. I'm guessing it'll have a stack of redemptive material in it vis-a-vis providing explanations for the whacky stuff that happened in Prometheus. People will be walking out of the cinema saying, "aaah! So that's why Shaw ran in a straight line!"

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Yeah needless to say, I'm looking forward to the sequel - & I'm a big Noomi fan as well.

RIPLEY!!

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

My best mate can't bring himself to watch any movie with Fassbender in it 'cause that massively hung rich A-list bastard is his wife's ex :lol

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I dont see why Cameron has been corrupted by Power?
One thing people must realize is that Cameron did not get a blank Check after Titanic for avatar.
Fox passed on it, disney too, then Fox agreed to finance the r&d for the distribution rights.
Cameron found the money with other investors, Avatar is one big indépendant movie.

Now that you dont care for the story ok but Cameron is still a master, he never was and never Will be a hack like Lucas.
Now that the universe is set ill see what he makes of it, i just hope it gets more intense like the abyss, less family friendly.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

R-rated 80's Cameron would never make a movie about humans nuking an entire species from orbit. If he made ALIENS today Burke would be the hero and the marines would be the bad guys.

Prometheus >>> Avatar

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Avatar might be too simple but Prometheus is just dumb.
Not really dumb, but they ****ed it up so badly that it end up being fakely smart.
Yet its really gorgeous to look at and to know of what could have been.

Lucas a hack? Seriously? George Lucas has probably done more to further the movie industry than any other film maker. Cameron walks in the footsteps Lucas.
You may not like George Lucas' directing or his scripts, but as a story and myth maker, there are very few who can compete.

I like Lucas a lot, childhood hero and all, and I agree about how he single-handedly changed the industry -- they will be studying him for years in film school -- but I have to respond to your post with: Howard the Duck and Willow. In fact, beyond the conceits he came up with in his twenties/thirties (Star Wars and Indiana Jones) he's created no new story of value.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I think he gave all he got with thx1138 creativly speaking.
Star wars (like avatar) is completely dérivative, not original, yet its solid entertainment.
All the things i love about Star wars are mostly the work of other talents.
Joe Johnston, ralph mcquarrie, irvin kirshner, gary kurtz.
I respect his business skills, the fact he started it all, he choosed his collaborators well but as an artist himself im not impressed.

If you were around in the 70's you would find Avatar very derivative too. I think I had a black-light poster with floating islands of rock with waterfalls and strange birds.

One thing I will say about Cameron though -- he does keep surprising us. Every time they say he can't do it, he does.

Or '90s?

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Did you miss the "like avatar" part in my post :)

Lucas and Cameron grew up reading and watching stuff, its no surprise that they end up taking from what they loved young.
Star wars is the first and almost only one of its kind, a new hope is as simple, as non surprising as avatar yet it works great, and the follow up was quite great. Maybe avatar Will have that too. Who knows... But yeah three more movies... I rather see Alita... Or something else... Dunno...
