Would anyone today want a Pilot Luke or 3PO from 10 years ago? Just saying.

Would anyone in ten years want the new Pilot Luke or 3PO? Who knows what the future brings? Just saying.:lol

And at the $40-50 that Luke Pilot would have been ten years ago, I'd toss the head and take the rest anyday!

Instead we just got big head caricature versions of Jedi Luke, Bespin Han, Tatooine Luke and Yavin Luke.

Well, in the past year or two I got a Leia Boussh for $35 and a Rebel Commando Infantryman for $40 shipped and they are both great value even at twice those prices based on what's in the box - by today's standards.

The SSC heads from back then (and according to some, still today) are pretty dismal or at least sub-par, but the outfits, weapons and accessories were a pretty great deal for the $40-70 those figures went for upon release. Those pieces are pretty much on-par with anything today, SSC or HT.

I didn't want those other guys 10 years ago. ;) In 10 years time, these figures should still be fairly realistic looking with decent sculpts. No doubts there may be better releases of the same characters, but what's coming out today is still pretty solid. I collect vintage toys, so old isn't bad. Bad is bad. ;)

I display my 1978 12" 3po proudly. I love the look of the old. Hasbro 3po from around 1998 also remained passable for quite a long time. Heck I had him with my sideshow figures for a while until I got the Tamashii version. Honestly I never itched for a sideshow 3po until a couple years ago when toy quality was really escalating.

Doll Rambo was quickly replaced by this response as the funniest thing I've read on these boards.

The paint makes him look really oily, which is good. They've done a great job on this. I wish it were BETTER than the Tamashii all around, but it is not necessarily better per se. Instead its got its good things like the paint and the articulated fingers (very nice touch to edge Tamashii out in that department). Hopefully we'll get a few more surprises as they roll this thing out. Pistons only run on the slides according to Kevin, who also noted the goofy thing that the Tamashii figure does when the pistons pull all the way out. SS looked to avoid that and go with scale (form over function), which is a good position to take. Overall, I'll buy this to go with their awesome R2. Hopefully 3PO gets a touch button and sound as well. For me, I think the integrity of the metal in the feel of the Tamashii figure will always make this one feel a little more toyish, but it's going to be a great figure. Great offerings from SS SW!

Great assessment - and yeah, the finger articulation's pretty damn cool and unique.

It would have been great if SSC had offered a pristine/shiny version AND a weathered version like on the PF (and some people would have bought both in 1/6 if it was under $200) but they do paint instead of vac-metallizing so pristine probably wouldn't have looked right and they knew it. In looking at the PF thread, seems like there were some complaints bout how the clean 3PO came out.

Wonder when this will release - just after R2, or much later?

It'll be much later. As I remember correctly, Kevin told DCFett and I that C3PO was still in the proto phase whereas R2 is in pre-production.

Awesome that you guys were there to chat with Kevin. Straight from the source...

But bummer on the timeline. With SideshowAlex's earlier comment (which I guess was an error in the heat of SDCC) about it being pretty much the finished item had me thinking this would be coming a month or so after R2. Instead, it's looking closer to Episode VII's release date...

Seems like the same 2 1/2 year period between Medicom and Tamashii 3PO releases is going to be repeated with the Tamashii and SSC 3PO releases.
:gah:

I don't see the problem. Nailed the reference material in my opinion.

I wouldn't bet on Hot Toys giving us what we want. Any Hot Toys R2D2 and C3PO will be based on episode VII and looking at what JJ has done to the X-Wing, well, lets just say they won't be OT accurate.

I'll be PO'ing this one on release. My only decision is do I need a second Artoo as the first is going with the DX7. If the arm will detatch ala ep IV Tuskin attack, I'll put him with my Tuskins.

Looking at them side by side R2 does look a little on the thin side. Is it enough to keep me from from buying??? Nope not at all.

Tap'd from my Nexus 7 v2

I don't think R2 or Threepio will change much for the JJ SW movies--just weathering maybe. The X-Wing is different because it's supposed to be like a car brand. The Toyota from 40 years ago is not going to look the same as a current Toyota. We even saw the evolution of the X-Wing in the Prequels--we saw early versions that would eventually evolve to the one we saw in the OT. What we have been previewed is just the latest model of the X-Wing.

R2 didn't change in the prequels (except for the rockets which aren't visible in normal occasions). Threepio did because they show him being built and evloving into the character we see in the OT. He was the "finished" Threepio by the end of Ep 3 and didn't change for the 20 years when we see him again in Ep 4. There's no reason to think Threepio or R2 would change for the newest trilogy because they're singular characters, not just interchangeable models of droids. We may see newer models of protocol and astromech droids, but they won't be R2 or Threepio.

Hold on. You mean the new movies aren't going to continue on the day immediately following the events of RotJ?

I would like to hope that if 30 years passed that 3po and R2 may have been upgraded to some extent. Same goes with the falcon.

Same goes with the falcon.

I hear the new sound system is to die for, the new kitchen is the center of the party and the new crown/cornice moldings really make everything pop.

Chewbacca and a few buddies are replacing all the window glazing next weekend. Come by for a few beers and some blue milk. We're throwing some Bantha on the BBQ.

:lol PP is obviously joking, but he's got the general idea. Sure there will probably be upgrades and fixes, but nothing as extreme as the "new" X-Wing which is a totally different model. So maybe R2 will get his rockets back, maybe Threepio will get the silver leg replaced, and the falcon might get some new panels on it or a slightly different paintjob, but nothing that will significantly change them. I think JJ knows those things are iconic to the trilogy and won't change them too much--just slight cosmetic changes.

Technically, the new X-wing is an "old" design since its based on McQuarrie's original X-wing design.

I think it's quite cool how that has worked out, that the older designs actually do look a bit more progressive than what was built for the screen. I'm willing to bet that the stormtroopers will look like the original McQuarrie designs.

Exactly. It also doesn't appear to have an Astromech based on the sneak peek I've seen so far. I mean it could just not be socketed in there yet, but I haven't seen one behind the cockpit.

I do too. At first I was like 'hey wait that's not new...' but then I got it. Nice full circle. Though on your second point, I'm not sure the oxygen-masked troopers look 'progressive'... as much as I'd like to see them realized. Seeing the cartoon design of the Inquisitor and such, I'm a bit worried for the overall look of new movies.

I get what you mean about the oxygen things since they look more pronounced on the McQuarrie version, but I still think they'll end up using it. It's a nod to the originals and it just looks damn cool:

I'm not sure if I've come across the Inquisitor sketch. Link?
