Guys, I'm thinking of making my own indy head. What are your thoughts on the Hot toys hat? Is it too small? I was going to model the head around this, otherwise might make the hat myself.

I think you should look at what body you want to use as well. Body plus clothes, accessories, etc. along with hat(s) and then decide.

Many of us have been bugging Kato for years now to craft a new Indy jacket. A few years ago I even sent him reference photos of my own 1:1 Wested in an attempt to get the ball rolling. Well, Kato has finally revisited Indy, and the results are spectacular. Because of my constant pestering over the last few years, and because Kato apparently really likes my Indy, he expedited my set in hopes I would take some pictures to share. Here they are!

Modding an original work (additive, subtractive, whatever) = OK

Modding an original work and then making new casts (copies) from that for sale = NOT OK

If in doubt, the blanket rule is this: RECASTING SOMEONE ELSE'S WORK/PRODUCT = BAD. It's theft of intellectual property, duplicating/copying copyrighted works (for profit).

Actually... that's not completely true. The line is blurry; for the purposes of the board members have been allowed to take an existing sculpt, modify it in someway (add, subract, shrink or expand) and then offer casts for sale. The only thing strictly prohibitted is a straight recast and I think it's generally accepted that you should not modify, cast and sell an item from a custom artist like Rainman, Iminime, Grove, etc.

Is this a bit hypocritical, sure, but it's the way of things.

5 years waiting on Les - Sideshow Indy head and two sets of hands plus 100 bucks... gone poof..... He shut his email down. His page is still up. Next trip east I will look him up in Georgia. Steal my money but give me back my damn property... Would love to see a poll of who was jacked to take legal action. Probably against the rules but allowing him to steal from people aint no better. Wounds that have never healed.....:(

Les is one of my biggest let downs in this hobby... I'm out about $200 to him and he's someone I've not only spoken to a number of times, but even met in person once. I trusted him to the bitter end and am $200 out of pocket for it. In the end he was not the stand up guy he pretended to be.

Wow, and the greatest Indy gets greater... love how this new jacket turned out. I always respected the quality of Kato's first jacket but it looked a bit thick to me, this is just incredible and supple looking.

Congrats :rock

What he said. Just like in real life the size of a hat depends on the size of the person's face and the shape of their body.

You're right, that's definitly the best way to go :D I'll probably be using the hot toys indy body for this.

Marf that indy is looking badass! Where's his hat from?

Thanks, GB! :rock The leather on this jacket is about half the thickness of the V1, I was blown away!

Thank you sir! The hat is actually from the SSC KOTCS Indy. :)

Actually... that's not completely true.

I don't care much about what's "commonly accepted" on the board. Modding, recasting and then selling without the express authorization of the original artist is totally unacceptable. Regardless of who the artist is and who made the original sale. There is no reason to protect artists like the ones you mentioned and not others that may be employed by Sideshow, Hot Toys, Asmus, etc. Hypocritical doesn't begin to describe it. Some of these people may not be bothered enough by it to do anything about it, but seriously, if someone wants to sell cast products, let them do their own work and make their own originals.

Let me tell you, I could be making a lot more sales (and profit) on CCFL sabers alone if I ripped off the SSC and Hot Toys sabers by re-casting them.

Anyway…

That new jacket looks phenomenal Marf! And of course it also bears repeating, the sculpt/paint as good as ever.

You don't have to care... but your post was misleading. I was clarifying what the policy of the board we are posting on is. You can agree with the policy or not, but it changes nothing.

You can agree with the policy or not, but it changes nothing.

Then time to change the policy of the board because the law doesn't agree with it either (though that's always free to be challenged as well). And given the support the board gets from Sideshow (for example), I'd be absolutely amazed if they condoned forum members copying their products and reselling them here.

But with respect to my earlier post, I wasn't speaking for the board when I wrote what I did. I was talking about common sense, decency, artist's rights and of course copyright. You could have come out and just added "The forum condones piracy of works of art so long as it's not done to the works of a select list of smaller artists." Because that's precisely what you're saying is the board's policy.

It looks it... what I'd always liked about the Soveriegn was how it folded and you could get a really nice distressed look. But, it's kind of stiff and a bit dry looking. What Kato's acheived seems like it would really bunch up nicely (if you went that route) and has that nice supple appearance. Very jealous.

Thanks, fellas, Indy is definitely the #1 favorite of my collection. :)

As he should be :lecture

re: "recasting (with modification) is A-OK here."

Well this attitude, and mods stating it as a "policy" no less, leaves Dave open to being sued should someone not like a member ripping off their work. If you're putting up a horde of cash to cover him in case that happens, then I supposed that's cool.

I've seen multiple boards go down for much (much) less over the years.

It's like talking to a condescending robot... boop beep boop

You're absolutely right about the material, it's very soft and supple! In fact, I want to try to bunch up the sleeves and leave them be for a while to see if I can't get a more crinkled look on them, because I think this material would do well with that.
