A lot of speculation as to why, however, I reserve judgement until hearing from her.
It's fine for me if she's not back so much. I watch it for all of the characters involved, especially Piper.
Oh man... I just started watching this last night, it's a great show!!
But the news of Prepon leaving really sucks... I mean, all the other characters are really well written and acted, and really entertaining, but one of the main storylines here is their relationship and history... not sure it's a good idea if she's not back!

They said nothing is in concrete yet and they are actually working on a new contract for her. They said the Huffington Post's article is actually false. Guess time will tell. I love the Alex Vause character.
That's basically it right now. Everyone is specualting without really knowing what is what. I think I will just wait to see what happens before I worry too much.
I agree that her character is very important to the storyline. Especially when it comes to Piper and her growth/struggles, etc. So here's hoping it's all rumor.

I am probably in the minority but I would actually be OK if they deviated from real life and wrote her character off the show. Mainly because I don't think she is a good actress, at least not in this role.

Apparently Prepon is a Scientologist and there are rumors that her exit is the Church's doing!!

Thinking about it, that is probably one of the most realistic reasons. You wouldn't join a show as main cast, for the first season, watch it do well upon release then leave it.
So how are they going to write her out of the show?

I need to pipe in here to set the record straight because of the silly rumors (Scientology etc.)
Laura and I are friends, and all I can say is that she is not renewing her contract for Orange is the New Black. She is going to be in one episode of season 2 only but it is a BIG episode and it brings conclusion to the Alex character.
The reason why Laura is not coming back is not because of religion, the truth is that she's done the ensemble cast thing time and again. She's thrilled with the reaction the show is getting and her praise. But the show is really Taylor's show and while she loves Taylor, she wants to focus on projects where she can be a more central lead.
I think she is making a wise move, she is leaving with her power, due to the positive reaction of her performance and the uproar of her leaving she will be in high demand, in fact her decision has already proven to be very wise indeed as she has some big things in the pipe...
