Re: The Man of Steel

I realize you like to open your butt for these guys but seriously, why even bother if the intent is just to halfass a score? YAY! I EXCEL AT MEDIOCRITY!!!! :cuckoo:

It's not halfassing - it's taking a different approach.

Best example being Elfman Batman vs. Zimmer Batman

You may or may not like it, but I don't think many people will think that Zimmer/Newton Howard have 'half-assed' their Batman score so far

I think they did. Except for the extreme Nolancompoops who'd disagree, it's completely unmemorable. Avengers suffered from this same ____. Great movies need great, memorable scores, something where you hear the intro and you know instantly what it is. Imagine how much more epic Begins would've been if it'd had a great theme, instead of filler music.

I remember back when Begins came out thinking the score was cool but still sounding like leftover music from Memento. :lol

Re: The Man of Steel

Alright no more sarcasm (for a-dev's sake).

I like Hans Zimmer's work, Backdraft, The Rock, Driving Miss. Daisy, Lion King, Rainman, the list goes on. I really enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean too.

As far as his superhero scores are concerned with Batman, I like those as well. Molossus is one of my favorite tracks, something that I associate with "Batman" like I do with Elfman's work. I hate the current TDKR Bane chant stuff but so far I've enjoyed what he's done with Batman. I just wish he'd give the character a specific theme for when he's on screen and flesh them out more.

The only thing I don't like is how often he recycles his own work. It's constant. I know other composers do this as well (Elfman comes to mind) but with Zimmer it's really noticeable. From Call of Duty to feature films certain sounds start to emerge that are too familiar.

As long as Superman is something fresh and fits the character, I don't care what Zimmer does. I do agree that he's a bit overused for all these films but heck, so was Danny Elfman for decades as well as John Williams. If it's good, I don't care. It would be nice if these directors and movie makers were a little more adventurous with who they work with though. I guessed way back when this project was announced that Zimmer would do the tracks.

Where's Howard Shore? His composing for Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece.

I agree that a lot of the tracks on the Begins and TDK soundtracks start off slow, but that is by design for the scenes that they are applied to. It's always a very muted and slow build-up, so I see how those parts can be forgettable, BUT there is also a definite, distinct, and memorable "Batman theme" in there...it just doesn't go on at full crescendo for several minutes like the Elfman theme does. This track shows both sides of the coin:

I remember when I first saw the TDK prologue, after the Joker scene, when the bit from "Barbestella" plays all I could think is "THAT is the Batman theme!" (starting at just before 4:02) "Molossus" from BB and "I'm Not a Hero" and "Like a Dog Chasing Cars" are pretty damn memorable tracks...but I guess I'm just saying that because I'm a Nolancompoop. :wave

Looking forward to the MoS Score. I agree with DiFabio, sometimes it becomes too easy to recognize a composer's work because of it's similarities to their previous work. I think it's inevitable, you can't always hide your "style" --- it's like recognizing a comic-book artists' work on different books.

I think the cape looks great, still not completely sold on the suit, but I definitely like it more than I did when the first shots were released. I'm thinking it will look even better in the full film photography and full story context.

Re: The Man of Steel

^^^ That theme is a snoozer. There's nothing really distinct about it at all. It sounds more like some war movie or sci-fi endcredits sequence to me. I know you're talking about the part where the strings and percussion finally kick in, but it still doesn't really rise above bland for me. :huh

Re: The Man of Steel

For me the Batman theme is this, from the 40 second mark

It appears earlier in TDK in the 'Batpod release' scene but it kinda falls away again (0:40 - 1:00 in the below clip); indicating that Batman is still not completely there yet. Once he decides to take the fall for Dent, that's when he becomes fully formed.

Yeah man it gave me serious chills and I couldn't stop replaying it from the special edition soundtrack :rock

Edited my post to show the instance it appears earlier in the film, where it isn't fully formed

I just kept watching that same scene on youtube; like I have done for the past 10 minutes.:lol

Funny how this film thread has become a score thread :slap

:yess:

Funny how you drop in the middle of a discussion and _____ about it's contents. As I said in the ASM thread, when you whined about a similar situation, discussion evolves. If you like it, stay and contribute, if you don't, it's simple, GTFO! :huh
