i really dont see what's so special about the ex sword in this case, only thing preventing me from buying the regular at a good discount off ebay is the missing head.

Show me a regular that is cheap? I have been watching for a while now.

He originally had it listed at $499. Before the auction was over he repriced it at $700. Now it is listed at $999.
I contacted him when he did the first price bump. He said he sold one in his shop for $700. I don't know what justification he has for bumping it up another $200.
I mean I know he has one that is complete with both heads but he still has the mis numbered base. Either waY would never pay any where near that price.

It depends on the collector & how badly/desperately the collector wants it. The preceding has been proved many times. It does not mean it makes any sense . . . for some.

True, but . . . how many time have some said the exactly the same thing of certain offerings only to be stymied/surprised by it's rapid/sudden appreciation in value that is either a spur of the moment or one of those WTH instances with regards to certain PFs, statues, & 1:6 figures? The recent VAMPIRELLA EX PF/statue from last year comes to mind unless the demand/want for the EX version has leveled off. I have not checked eBay specifically for her lately.
When the STORM SHADOW PF/statue offering is finally completed & released . . . provided there are no design & quality flaws (yeah right)
. . . it'll probably exceed the demand/want compared to the SNAKE EYES & TIMBER offering unless the production is significantly more and the price is significantly more based on the reception of the SNAKE EYES & TIMBER.As for STORM SHADOW, I hope the regular version will be the white with grey camouflage and the EX will be the classic original outfit for a definite contrast & difference.

The mis numbered base is beyond his control. A lot were made like that. Mine is, ie es of 1000 on base. I think that's irrelevant.

Sideshow hasn't made a regular and an EX statue two totally different colors in quite a while. I know they did it with 7 of 9. if they do both, one should be the comiquette, which looks like the newer one, and one should be the PF, in the first Storm Shadow uniform.

I love people using ebay listing price to determine the value, i am going to list my captain jack cosbaby for $1000 that will surely make it worth that much. Ebay is full of dreamers, apparently this forum too 
the ex is $400 max, but i rather pay <$300 for the non-ex since that also came with a sword already. (if it doesnt then the ex sword is worth it).

I was just stating what they are going for on EBay. If you can find me an EX close to retail let me know.
So if I order a regular off say, alterego, what are the chances I get one with only one head?

I can tell you that the sooner you order, the better your chances of getting a replacement head if you do need one, before they run out.
I ordered one from BBTS and got it a few days ago missing the visor portrait. They aren't getting the visored heads from Sideshow until April sometime.
I rereived my visor head, 1 week after statue came from sideshow.

fyi guys this statue is now soldout on the website. I was waiting for the missing visor head to arrive first before purchasing, but had to jump in and place the order today from one of the online retailers before they too become soldout. As long as you order from a reputable dealer you should be fine, they are all getting the replacement visor in april and will ship to you for free, at least midtown comics + bbt confirmed for sure.
Have seen this piece in person at midtown comics, i can tell you without any reservation it is an awesome awesome statue, the amount of the detail, size, and the imposing look/pose of snake eye + timber is some of SS best work.
