Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

T
I dont personally think you could be more wrong. They're giving them a bit of flow to them than just static piece after static piece. The SSW line had several of those as well. For me personally I like that they have some movement to them it adds something to a collection which of course is against you wanting just static boring stand there poses.

I'm sorry that my opinion and personal preference are wrong :)

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

I just said I think you're wrong that doesn't make it so. :slap

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

For me, it wasn't a Gondorian armoured Pippin I found unappealing....a statue of Pippin soiling himself on the steps of Gondor I did find unappealing however. :wink1:

I suppose all good sculpting companies drop clangers now and then (Cartoon GTG vs Balrog :wink1:), but they learn from these and try and improve. I think the Pippin statue is very well detailed and sculpted and the pose was a brave move by SS/W to show the simple Hobbit totally out of his depth in Gondor. A bit like SS taking the chance on 'action poses' for thier new maquette line, they have had a fair few years to research and gather feedback on the original set of figures and have brought out a range that has obviously benefited from that research. It's nice to see the unusual amongst the standard now and then :lecture

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

The 'essence' of a Hobbit is quiet and unnassuming (to me). Each of the 4 mentioned can be shown as happy go-lucky young Hobbit's with the 'action hero' poses left for the non Hobbit characters. Or; Frodo can be shown accepting the task at the round table at the meeting of Elrond; Sam can be shown with fists raised (at Strider) in the PP; Pippin could be in Lothlorien cloak and Hobbit attire throwing rocks at Uruks and Merry could be posed about to strike the ML at Pelennor.

It's the very nature of plain, unnassuming Hobbits that maybe makes them unappealling to some people, even if they are dressed in battle armour. They are the heart of the tale for me and I would love to see them just as they are when we first fully see them...but as PF's first! :rotfl

Dave, You are a collector after my own heart! I hope that we see the Hobbits in their more true-to-character outfits as part of the Premium Format line, as even the simple, rustic clothes the hobbits wear represents really well as part of the PF line. I hope we get to see Sam as one PF offering, and since the hobbits do appear more unassuming, that we get Merry and Pippin as a two-pack.

Since the maquette line is more dynamic, this seems like the perfect opportunity to offer the hobbits in their more heroic moments, and the ones you have described above are perfect for the maquette line. I would be really happy to see both Merry and Pippin in their Rohan and Gondorian armor in the maquette line, provided that Pippin doesn't look like he just filled his nappy. Sam and Frodo don't change as much, but the wear and tear on their normal costumes could reflect the rigors of the journey!

I agree with both you guys, with you all the way. I'm glad to be in such good company. Couldn't have offered any better options for the Hobbits myself. Hope SS get to see this and act on it...can you hear us SS????????

Is that for PF's though and not these young pretenders to the ultimate LOTR range 'maquettes'? :wink1:

Rather than having Frodo and Sam maquette's in their Shire garb, I'd prefer to see them in their Mordor Orc garb [with helmeted alternate heads as the excl.]. Esp. if SS were to consider combining the two in one maquette.

This is exactly what i had in mind too. Didn't Gentle Giant do the same with their busts of the two?
I've always wanted a Merry statue in Rohan armour so i'd be all over that, but was hoping for a 'Shire' Pippin, otherwise everyone would be saying how crap the SSW Pippin is non-stop ;)
A two-pack of each hobbit 'couple' would be great, and as Sideshow said they were blurring the line between maquette and diorama, the hobbits would be the perfect choice for this. You could have Sam holding Frodo or just stood side-by-side, and you could have Pippin holding Merry when he finds him on the Pelennor. Although they'd probably look best stood up...

Close. The GG busts [which look very good IMO] featured removeable helms.

I wouldnt mind seeing them in those either honestly. As I've said before they would still be members of the Fellowship and like GTW says they Fellowship doesn't come to an end until they reach the Grey Havens.

There were some small figures (49mm) produced by Eaglemoss (UK) which might give you some idea of what SS could do.

There are others of Frodo & San and Merry & Pippin (and may others) if you would like to see them.

They were part of a fantastic collection of 180 Led figures. They were not available worldwide :(. But I am proud to say I have everyone of them :yess:.

Nice find Bill! Something along those lines would be fine with me where Sam and Frodo are concerned.

I tried collecting those Eaglemoss pieces myself when that line 1st started, but I couldn't even get them to respond to my emails or phone calls, and soon gave up trying. To say I wasn't too impressed with them as a company would be an understatement.

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

Those Eaglemoss pieces are very nice for the size. I picked up a Witch-King (Morgul Lord) on E-bay a few years ago and it's great. Too bad you couldn't get on the subscription plan here in the U.S.

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

Yeah their communication left alot to be desired, but i did manage to get every single one. Glad they've stopped now though, they've covered everything they possibly could - probably the only LOTR line to give us a complete collection! But if i saw ONE more Aragorn..... :rotfl

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

Q.
Is there any possibility of a Sauron Premium Format and/or a Saruman? I was unfortunate enough to miss all of your previous Sauron products because I just recently discovered Sideshow.
A.

Yup. Saruman and Sauron have just officially graduated from the candidate list to the confirmed, planned, product line-up for 2012. We’ll be collaborating with Jerry Vanderstelt on Sauron, who may or may not end up “officially” in the PF classification, but will be BIG.

Okay, Sideshow, straight to the point. When will we see our next LOTR Premium Format, and will it be the Mordor Orc?

Okay, straight to the answer. We hope to show you the next LOTR PF in … maybe February 2011, and it will indeed be the Mordor Orc.

The Gollum Premium Format is, in a strange way, “two for the price of one,” and I was wondering if you might be considering offering other smaller characters, such as hobbits, with multiple characters on a single base. This would be a great way to tackle Merry and Pippin! (and maybe even Sam and Frodo?)

Gollum is rather unique, since the character itself is two-in-one. Merry and Pippin, and Sam and Frodo, require a fair bit more consideration in the execution of their costuming and dressing. IF a two-fer offering could be designed well, and executed well, sure, why not! And multiple characters on a single base? Indeed, outside of PF format, it’s almost as though you’re reading our minds! But two PF’s on one base would not significantly reduce the costs associated with producing the figures, so would make for a rather expensive set.

Can you please answer the one burning question for LOTR Premium Format supporters? Has the demand for Hobbits to complete the Fellowship been acknowledged, and if so, what is the verdict on chances of it becoming reality? Good or Bad? -AND- Several forums have held polls on the question of whether collectors would want Hobbits in Premium Format form including the Freaks board, the S+F forum, as well as the GD. The majority say ‘Yes’ for all 3, whilst others want only certain Hobbits. Can you please comment on this as people have taken the time to set up these polls and respond to them? Original question: “With money getting tight for a lot of people and collecting having to take a bit of a back seat to other less important things like bills, mortgage, food etc, could Sideshow PLEASE confirm one way or another if the Fellowship is to be completed in the PF line for LOTR? If not, who is least likely to make the cut and why? A detailed answer may help to answer more questions than it will undoubtedly generate (I hope!).” -AND- Can Sideshow please comment on the polls run on several forums asking for a complete Fellowship in Premium Format form, as the new line of maquettes will not be a substitute!

Just the one burning question? Be honest, LOTR fans are burning with far more than one question. ;) Especially with the HEAT generated when the Hobbit films were officially greenlit, there are more than a few fires burning in the LOTR camps these days. Since we posed our challenge to the fan base to express real demand for the Hobbit’s in PF form, we’ve received very little physical feedback directly to us. We want a mail-in campaign, direct to Sideshow HQ, gosh darn it! Frodo lives, right?

In GREAT earnestness (because yours truly writing this rather tongue-in-cheek reply is a HUGE LOTR fan), we have HIGH hopes that the ranks of the LOTR fans will be reinforced by the incoming flood of Hobbit fans, justifying an overwhelming compulsion to pull the hobbits out of hiding in all formats. Dwarves too, what the heck! Time will tell.

Re: LOTR 'Ask Sidsehow" Questions 14/06/10

Wonder if that means Sauron will be done as a maquette then...
