Is Avatar the greatest thing ever? No, its not. Is it a pretty enjoyable flick? Yeah, I thought so. Did it hit something with some folks? Sure seems it did. If it did and it maybe just maybe makes them more aware to help do something with this planet thats great. Will it? That remains to be seen.

All I heard was, "Dude, those 3D effects are off the hook!" I highly doubt, the "go green" message is what most people took home with them. :lol

Oh Josh you're always so nice and neutral. And I don't mean that in a condescending way. There is nothing wrong with liking Avatar but I will curious how it holds up over the years.

The shine wore off Avatar pretty quickly. It was a great movie visually, and I'd say the theatre experience was very good, but now that I have it home I can't even sit through the entire film. Overall any depth or underlying meaning/message to the film is all pretty obvious and sophomoric. Wall-E had superior environmental commentary. :lol

I would say you're right. I would hope that maybe just maybe it hit a few folks.

Well, I'd like to think I'm a nice guy. :lol There are some things I'm neutral on and some I'm not. I'm actually a bit opinionated I think but I try to be really good at accepting everyone's views. I don't take it that way either. :duff I think it will hold up some. Probably not as much as hardcore fans want people to believe it will but I think it will.

That depends on the sequel.
If Empire had sucked would have Star Wars had the same staying power?

I think Empire sucking would have hurt SW's staying power, but I think if there was no sequel, ANH would have still had a large impact.

I haven't seen Avatar and have nothing against it per se, I am just tired of some people acting like it's the second coming. (If you like Avatar and don't feel that way I'm not mocking you. :p )

And that goes back to my original point; aside from those people who do actually paint themselves blue, no one actually is saying its the Second Coming. Its an urban legend perpetuated by the internet. It was a must see fairy tale in the tradition of Star Wars as far as a movie going experience, it just didn't have instantly iconic characters.

For that reason alone it'll probably always rank beneath SW, Indy, LOTR, etc., as far as it being an enduring phenomen over the years. Time will tell.

Well I like it, but I'm not a die-hard fan. I did not buy it Blu-ray yet as don't want to own it twice when the special edition comes out.

The reason I mentioned Empire, is because it did so much to expand on the saga. When you pick apart a New Hope, it has great execution, but the story is quite a simple one. I guess Lucas wisely made a contained simple storyline in case there was no sequel, Cameron might have made the same choice. Now it's a sucess he can greatly expand on the on going saga of Pandora

Anecdotally, I have encountered some of those people. Not on a large scale rabid pack of fanboys level, but enough to slightly annoy me. :lol

As Khev said, Star Wars has great characters and that's what sets it apart from most other films. Sure the story of ANH is pretty basic and has been done before, but it's the characters that make it so memorable. From what I've seen, Avatar just doesn't have that. I'm sure it's a fine film, just not on the level of a classic like Star Wars.

You really don't "get" the appeal of a crowd pleasing underdogs vs. invaders story with stunning visuals and a familiar yet solidly told story? Come on now. That's like saying you don't get Star Wars. You don't even have to think that Avatar is remotely as good as Star Wars to still realize that it obviously touched the same cultural nerve.

I get the "oldest story ever told" appeal. I do.

What I don't get (at all) is AVATAR setting all kinds of monumental box office records. Not even its technical achievements merit that. Not even close.

Even TITANIC as the Box Office Champ makes more sense to me, because I get the notion of millions or gob-smacked preteen girls wanting to see its cheesy bubblegum romance a gazillion times. But AVATAR? In 2010? Don't get it. And the box office phenomenon has to be the sole reason it even sniffed a Best Picture Oscar, much less was even nominated. And that's a pretty sad reflection, imho.

Look, it's a good, solid flick. But at the end of the day there is nothing truly unique or special about it at all. As I've said before, Cameron himself has made at least 2 better films that start with "A" in the title.

:lecture:lecture:lecture Well put, Khev.

Why was AVATAR a "must-see" fairly tale? Not being facetious. I'm serious. Other than the IMAX/3D angle, what at all was "must-see" about the film? What made the SW & INDY films must-see were the instantly iconic characters, just like you said. And since you've already implied that AVATAR doesn't have that, then what's there that makes it a must-see movie (aside from the buzz & technical conceits)?

You said it already Carl. Its a good solid flick that people enjoyed seeing multiple times and for some reason it hit with some people making them HUGE fans. Why does it have to have all these mind blowing things and time changing characters to be loved by people when for probably the same reasons we love what we love folks life it? I know a lot of people that think Indy, Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, Iron Man, etc are all just really goofy and don't get the appeal. Different strokes for different folks.

There may be nothing unique or special about it for you but for some out there it has it. Probably for the same reasons we love our stuff. :lol Don't be the synical old man that cant fathom why people like stuff that really isn't all the dissimilar to what we like.

None of that answers my question. What about AVATAR in particular makes it a "must-see"?

Oh now come on. It does and you know it. I'll spell it out a bit more for you though.People like the love story, characters, the way the world looks, creatures, battle, etc. I think some of the people are finding something with taking care of your planet. A lot of the same types of reasons folks like us like what we like.

I personally don't subscribe with the folks that Avatar is the greatest thing to come along since sliced bread. However, its a good flick and I can fathom with why I like what I like people liking it the same way.
