Certainly not intending to be antagonistic about the issue, everything said is certainly only my opinion. Still, its a moot point imo. Unless SS is reissuing the Weta sculpts, saying this line shouldn't exist because it would devalue the Weta line is really stretching the boundries of reasonable. (Not that anyone has said it)

I agree completely. The potential effect that this line has on the value of any other should not be a major consideration as to whether or not it should be produced.

And, to be honest, I don't think these new pieces will affect the value of the older pieces much, if at all, any more than the value of the Patient Zero PF has affected the value of the 12" figure.

It just seemed that the tone of posts (in general, not yours specifically) was starting to head down the road that is has taken so many times in the past, where people start arguing about who is more passionate about their collection, or their status as a true collector, and it never ends well.

I don't see this doing too much to the SSW pieces. Its a bit of a different animal between the two honestly. The only thing that would cause any issues with those is if Weta started that line back up.

I like the thought of being able to snag a few statues again of characters from the movie. I don't know how taking a different route with some of the characters will work. Like the drawing of Gandalf for example. I just dont think of Gandalf in that way at all at least not the grey version of the character. I hope the price point is around the SSW line of statues as that would work out great for what I would buy.

I like the idea of portraying a side of the character we haven't seen or are not used to seeing. Take Gandalf as an example. He's a powerful wizard, no doubt, yet he chooses not to outwardly display that authority. But if he were to unleash his powers, how would that be portrayed? I think that perhaps this is what Sideshow is trying to convey.

All of you, try mimicking that Gandalf stance for a sec... do you feel like an all powerful bad ass wizard or just a tool standing in an uncomfortable, unnatural way? :lol

I'm fine with powerful, feisty Gandalf but that pose ain't working for me.

A few clunkers are bound to happen I suppose if you're trying to depict the character in ways and poses never before seen. All in all, this line shows a lot of promise so long as they stay true to the character and don't veer off into strange or unnatural poses.

Sideshow, WETA, and whatever other company gets a license will keep churning out Aragorns as long as they can keep making money from them. If the secondary value of an older version of Aragorn goes down on ebay, what do they care. They need to sell a new statue now. In fact, if there is an Aragorn that currently has a secondary market value of 300% of its original cost, that is exactly why Sideshow will make another Aragorn, because there is a demand causing that high secondary value. And they will supply that demand until they squash the secondary value of the original statue by selling new statues which is how they make their money. Don't fool yourself, we are not collecting Picassos or Monets. These are simple consumer market trinkets, and Sideshow will supply enough of them to satisfy the demand. Supply and Demand, that's what its all about.

Unfortunately, the LOTR collectible market was oversaturated years ago when SSW started pumping out those obscene 5000+ ES's. I for one don't see this as a negative whatsoever. Having choices or options is always a good thing for the consumer, it is the only way to ensure prices remain reasonable.
As for the prices dropping...that's been slowly happening for years now due to over inflated ES's, over inflated prices [due to speculators] and a general lack of interest in a licence that has cooled off dramatically since it's peak in 2005.

Which is what leeds me more to my point. It's not so much about 'buying what you like', it's a matter of market saturation. At what point does it no longer become a collectible business and moves to a mass market product.
What sells these items as much as anything else is that they are 'limited'. But while that very specific one maybe limited, wait a bit and another will come along. So even if I do like the current one, why buy now, it will either be cheaper later or something better later.
If enough then wait, sales don't happen and lines get canceled early.

Yet it's not consistant. You say if an Aragorn item has a current value of 300%, then that's why SS could make another one and yet a Doom PF is at like 500%+ in some cases and so far SS have never made another one. It's a business, money is to be made, so why hasn't there been another Doom PF.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, it's just that after a few years in all of this now, I'm getting more and more the feeling of being manipulated.

I like the Boromir concept. It's the only one I'm interested in at the moment.

So the existing PF and one of the two Dio's or the LSB don't do it for you then?

I own the PF and Helm's Deep dio. with the excl. KOTD dio. currently on pre-order. The Aragorn LSB is the only one [LSB] I don't own, but I won't hesitate to buy one if I can get a really good deal on it. For me it's all about the likeness and if for some reason I had to scale back the only two Aragorn's I would keep are the PF and the new maquette. As far as I'm concerned the PF and the new maquette [from what I've seen so far] are the ultimate Aragorn collectibles.

I don't know about another PF, but there is a comiquette in Doom's future. :D

Of course you are, as are the rest of us. SS and Weta are in the business of making money and they will both continue to produce collectibles in an attempt to separate us from our money. You think things are bad now, wait until The Hobbit.:naughty

I made up a list of potential characters for this line; I stopped at #58! There's definitely no reason to do the same, oft-repeated figures.

Well Sideshow has to appeal to those who weren't around in the "glory days" and those who want new representations of classic characters; but I hope they don't monopolize the line.
