Buddy just gave me his unused brand new I phone.. Problem is I use verizon and have had my number forever (don't want to change it) and the phone he gave me is an At&T phone..

Is there a way i can get this to work under my carrier or is it worthless to me..

You need to have your phone unlocked. That's what people do here in Canada.
Not to be racist, but in all honesty, Many chinese malls offer this service.

Make sure he cancels the AT&T for that phone then go to Verizon and they should be able to reprogram it. It may cost you though.

When I got the iPhone, I switched from T-Mobile and I was able to keep my phone number.

Yup. I still have my Verizon Wireless Cell phone number even though I've had AT&T for 5 years. You either have to switch or "crack" your phone. There are a few "how-to" sites on the net if you search for them.

In the US, you are limited to AT&T and T-Mobile.

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine. Someone gave him a 3G for free because the guy who owned it previously cracked the screen. My friend bought a new screen for $30 and now it's as good as new.

ATT service hasn't been too bad for me. A couple of deadspots, but for the most part I get service when I need it. Better than my old T-Mobile.

ATT is hit and miss around here. That's the only thing that's been holding me back. I've got a good plan with Verizon and so far, their service around here has been the best compared to others. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Verizon does make a move one day, hopefully within a year or two. I really like my BB, but it just seems like the apps on the IPhone are endless. That's my one gripe.

I don't really have any complaints with that. Everything has been great. If I do run into an issue, there are forums like Crackberry out there that can help.

Well if I can keep the number that just might settle it.. I have no loyalty to verizon, just my number.. I've been using a RAZr for the past few years and my screen just took a ^^^^..

And the freind isn't retarded.. Just a wealthy gadget geek that buys things he doesnt always want.. Well maybe that is retarded..
