View Full Version : New Body For Nosferatu

[Edit] I put him on a True Type today. See Page 4 for first comparison shot.

Sideshow's Nosferatu is one of my favorite action figures, but I have been very limited in which poses I can use.

This is because his ankles are so wobbly that I can only pose his lower body like this:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a339/maglorsregret/P1030294.jpg

If I do anything else with his legs he tips over! I can't tell you how many times he has done a shelf dive! :horror

I have gotten so frustrated with this that I put him back in his coffin (I mean box).

I would like do have more options for posing and have a sturdy body so, my question is:

What replacement body should I buy for him?

I would like to use a Hot Toys True Type (maybe narrow shoulder version), but I don't know if his feet and hands will work with the TT ankle/wrist pegs. Also, I don't know if it's compatible with the TT neck.

What about a new Buck or Prometheus body?

One final option would be to rig the ankles somehow to make them stronger, but I think I would prefer an all new body.

Thoughts?

I ended up getting a stand with custom decal for mine... he was not a stable figure.

If you swap bodies I'd probably go with a HT narrow, not slim. The slims are shorter and I don't think you want a short Nosferatu. As for the hands the Sideshow ones will usually work with HT pegs... sometimes you have to make the opening in the hand a big bigger, but not sure if that is necessary with the new smaller wrist pegs.

One other issue, is I think the feet on Nosferatu are connected to his body... so not sure how to get around that w/o some surgery.

Thanks for the feedback!

I just unboxed my Nosferatu again to check the feet.

I was to chicken to pull hard enough to remove the shoe.

So I decided to try some deep poses just out of curiosity. To my surprise they hold much better than the tall poses!!! All these years I have probably been trying to make the hardest possible pose work (without a stand, which I don't like to use).

I feel like I got a new figure!

Problem is that Nosferatu is usually standing up pretty straight... so Kung Fu poses don't really work for the character :lol

^^^ Exactly : )

I've always pictured(and posed) my Nosferatu to be very, VERY stiff with his legs, but his arms should be in a "creepy-like" state.

Maglor

Heh, that did cross my mind.:o

I do tend think of Nosferatu as being tall and statuesque.

But he does bend down to approach his final victim in the movie, so it's not totally out of character to have him in a deeper stance.

How is this for a less "Kung Fu" pose?

One more question[s]:

Where can I find one of these:

http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=6703R

I know that I said I don't like stands if I don't need to use them... but I guess I would like the option. The stand that comes with Nosferatu is pretty much useless in terms of weak ankles.

Regarding the stand in question: what is the word above "Monsters"?

Another thought: Where can I get generic Sideshow stands? Ebay seems to have a whole bunch of generic Hot Toys TT Stands, but can't find any SS stands.

Those have been LONG sold out. They were vastly under-produced at the time, let alone the demand for them now.

That's what I did for mine... he made a specific Nosferatu decal which I placed on a Sideshow stand. My guess is he still has the file, or at least could knock out another one.

I can take pictures of it later if you'd like to see what it looks like.

i love that figure. and with that costume, i'd put him on a TT narrow shoulder too, IMO.

my sideshow kroenen was kinda loose on a HT neckpost(short one), nothing superglue cant fix. as for the shoes, i think you can grab one with a similar style fitting a TT(more ankle articulation on a TT too). the hands might require minor surgery, if its attached to the sideshow body.

Where can I get a basic Sideshow stand? I can't find them on ebay or Sideshow's site (or google for that matter...)

Buy direct from Sideshow: Stands (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=6704&utm_source=search0109)

Toy Anxiety also has them, and for a few bucks less which is good if you are just going to cover it with a decal anyway: Toy Anxiety (http://www.toyanxiety.com/search.aspx?find=stand&page=2)

I really would love to pose him on a True Type (and I would definitely go narrow shoulders) but I am not willing to do the surgery, however minor.

I'm a chicken I guess... but I rarely do permanent mods to my figures, and I have never cut a body!:horror

I've only done a couple repaints. Otherwise my mods are removable/reversible (i.e. stuffing Sam Gamgee's shirt with cotton and pinning back Frodo's vest and jacket to make the pair look more to scale. Things like that.)

Thank you kain4521 and galactiboy.

Don't know why I couldn't find that!

galactiboy, if you have time post a pic of the Nosferatu decal!

And regarding the Toy Anxiety stands... you mean I could buy the Star Wars stand and just cover it up with the decal right...

O.K. so guess what happened last week?

I thought my deep stance on Nosferatu had solved my problem... well he did another shelf dive!!!:horror

Despite the deep stance.

So I abandoned that idea (though I'm glad I got some pics of him that way) and am now back to the preferred tall stance.

'How did I solve my week ankle problem' you ask?

Well I had a brilliant idea. I rolled up electrical tape that I had cut to just the right size and stuffed them in his shoes. 4 peices in all. 2 for each foot. One on each side.

WORKED GREAT!!!

Wish I had thought of that years ago!

SO I have finally been able to really work with him (posing really would be a lot easier on a TT though). And I came up with this pose. May tweak it a bit, but looks definitive to me (look at my avatar).

Thanks man!!! Looks really nice!

I think I am going to hold off on the stand. As you can see in the post above I have found a way to make Nosferatu atand well on his own (finally).

2 things:

1) Were is the metal part of Nosferatu's stand, up his jacket?

2) I really like your Hunchback. I have waffled about getting him for a long time because I didn't know if he would be lame or not, but he looks great in your pic. I think I will pull the trigger on him if I can find a good deal. I used to see him for $20 on ebay all the time.

Thanks again!

I like the Hunchback figure... he's actually really well made and of course a classic film. Once you get him hunched down he looks great amongst the other figures.

And the stand for the figure just fit up underneath his jacket; its very well hidden and I no longer worry about him toppling.

i've been in a same situation myself before too. one way or the other, i did a dry run with dragon bodies for surgical purposes...bearable loss if things got ugly.:monkey3

*maybe you can try and practice minor surgery with some SS buffy figure(nude), to get hold of those vampire hands on a TT...see how that goes, then swap the head and clothes.

i highly doubt HT will release a vampiric/monster hands separately. i'd been wanting a couple of those myself too.

So I'm finally doing this.

I just finished the necessary mods to get the head, hands, and feet to work. I won't give a full reveal yet, but here's a comparison teaser shot:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a339/maglorsregret/IMG_5643.jpg

Narrow Shoulder TT on left, SSC Buck on right.

As you can see the True Type (actually a TT copy) is shorter than that the SSC Buck, but the clothes fit pretty well on the TT. The pants are a tad bit long, but I think that can be futzed away. The TT has a much more natural look to it, but in a way the stiffness of the Buck almost fits the character more. :lol Keep in mind, the reason I did this in the first place was to have stable ankles. Mission accomplished in that department. :)

When I'm done I'll try and get the best pose/futzing I can from each and post another comparison shot. :peace

BTW, I cut my finger pretty bad in the process of doing this and am trying to decide if it needs stitches or not...

Very interesting thread! A great figure--my first Sideshow one, picked him up used a couple of months ago, complete. love the rats!

Yep! The ankles are ____e. I thought mine were worn, but maybe it's just a bad design. Tried splitting the joints and shaving some plastic from the housing, to make it tighter...no real improvement.

So...I cut the ankles off completely, and replaced them with the ankles off a TTL female (balljoint, solid as a rock). I cut the spare feet (high heel ones) from that body into stubs, with the ball on the other end, then epoxied the stubs into the boot feet of Mr. Shreck.
Perfect! Stands solid, and doesn't need the little base at all.

A great figure! Sculpting's fantastic--and the paint. I'm thinking of extending his fingernails at the moment...bit short with respect to the movie. Long spidery fingernails...ugh, hideous.
:hi5:

BTW--for your finger, try superglue and a piece of cloth till it starts to heal. Holds it shut as good as stitches and a damn sight quicker!

EDIT--here's mine. Thought I had some pics of the ankle mod, but they got deleted.

Yeah, the ankles are just crap. I had them stuffed with electrical tape and that worked pretty well, but I wanted to do something more permanent. Then I tried the superglue trick, but even that didn't work because the space in the joints were just that huge. It's actually the cut joint above the ankle that causes the problem even more-so than the actual tilting ankle joint.

I'm considering having the head repainted because the eye position has always looked a bit crossed to me. The guy I would send it to (Skiman) would be more than capable of adding length to those fingernails...

Your figure looks great! I've always had a hard time deciding whether to display him with or without the hat. He looks great both ways.

BTW--for your finger, try superglue and a piece of cloth till it starts to heal. Holds it shut as good as stitches and a damn sight quicker!

Yeah, I've done that one before. This cut was damn deep though.

In the end I used butterfly stitches and I'm wearing a splint because its right near the joint and I need to keep the finger straight while it heals.

Found the pic! This is before the feet have been cut down into stubs, for the boots. Shows the rigidity of the new ankles, no sloppy cuts or slack joint to compromise stability.
Tried just making a drilled hole (in the rubber) for the stub, and pushing it in a la the original, but it wasn't stable enough, so I had to glue it in.

Not an original SS Count Orlok any more, but at least I don't have to use a stupid stand. :pigfly:

Thanks man. I've never "frankenseined" a figure's calves before. Can you offer any tips?

Easiest thing to do is cut the legs off at the calf; then glue in an extra segment of leg with super glue and then wrap it with something like electrical tape to add a bit of stability.

You can use the same kind of leg, or if you've got something else of approximate diameter that would also work. I've also done a similar thing to reduce height; just cut out a segment of the leg and glue back together then wrap with electrical tape.

As I said earlier, the Buck is almost better suited to this particular character. But the True Type (copy) can get into very suitable poses. And it's so much easier to work with. Plus it's not weak in the ankles. :)

Surly the wrist joints give it away if nothing else.

It's the TT on the left. The arms and legs are longer on the Buck. This means the jacket fits the TT better (making it easier to hide the wrist joints). However the pants had to be futzed to work with the shorter legs. I cut off the elastic stirrup things and then cuffed the pants inside.

Anyway, the point was to make the figure stand well on it's own, i.e. give him stronger ankles. And this has done that. And all the joints are more versatile. Most noticeably the shoulders. The Buck permanently has that hunched forward look (which, as I said, actually fits the character), but the TT gives you a lot more options for posing.

Yeah the ankles are a pain, to be sure. Now that you pointed out the differences I see them. :lol

The pants definitely drape the TT more convincingly than on the buck. Nice work. :rock

Mags, I have a pair of long lower leg TT sections. I assume they would port right over to that Headplay TT... They're from the Enzio figure, replaced with standard length ones when I used the body for Indy. PM me if you're interested.... Keep in mind that you might risk stability by switching as the ball joints may not be as stiff.

I would've just gone with the AF body. It's half the price of the tall EB body, mimics the TT well enough and it's a smidge taller. Plus it has better ankle articulation and attached feet so you can just boil and dip the Sideshow shoes and pop them right on. :huh

Yes, assuming the body you have is buildt like a TT, the lower leg will pull right off with a bit of force... And yes, the ball joint of the ankle. The body you're using has has the same ankle ball joints as a standard TT, right?

Just throwing it out there. This looks great as is IMO, but if you wanted another 1/4" that would work... As would the long barbels that came with Captain America.

Permanently hunched, Maglor? I just got a hold of a Phantom, same body, also needs the ankles doing (just did them, an hour ago). First time seeing a SS Buck nude--it has clickable shoulders, regular and forward. Wondering why yours looks hunched.

Maybe it's just subjective...mine look fine to me. Bast*** pain having to fix ankles on these regularly though. My newly arrived NRFB Mole People (person!) has a bad one as well! Don't think it's a design flaw, because some them work! Others, for no reason, don't.

Yeah, there is some articulation in the shoulders, but ony to hunch them even more forward. :/

Other bodies allow the shoulders to go back more.

A better alternative body for your Vampire. :wink1:

If you're good with the height I'd say don't bother... It looks great to me!

Do you have two of these now?

I would've just gone with the AF body. It's half the price of the tall EB body, mimics the TT well enough and it's a smidge taller. Plus it has better ankle articulation and attached feet so you can just boil and dip the Sideshow shoes and pop them right on. :huh

Actually that wouldn't work. His ankle pegs fit right to the shoes which are solid.

Yep. I got 2. I stole one from my brother-in-law. :yess:

Once Skiman has some time, I think I'm gonna have him repaint the head/hands that are on the True Type. I wanna try a different eye position...

Should you change your mind, let me know. I have some decent dress shoes I'd send you free, that match and would work on a footed body.

One of my favorite figures of all time. I also have a hard time deciding to display with or without the hat. Yeah the ankles are a _____. As of right now the glue trick is working just fine but I feel like that is only a temporary fix. I'll save some of the ideas I see here.

Awesome idea... Dave would do some amazing work with this sculpt, no doubt!

Send him a set of hands too! :lecture

Received the Enzio legs from Flosi, and they worked great! :rock

The extra 1/4 inch is just enough!

It's a subtle difference, but I can tell. Before I was futzing him to make the jacket sit high to artificially make the legs look longer, but now everything is sitting just right.

So the body is done, now I just gotta wait until Skiman has some time to paint him for me. :impatient:

He looks great!

I want one now...

I've always loved the classic monsters.
But I'm just now falling for some of sideshows figures that have been around for like 8 years.:lol

Look forward to seeing the paint up! personally, I'm satisfied with the stock job. Teeth could do with a slight tidy up maybe. Still haven't lengthened his talons...must get around to it.

For me the biggest problem is the eyes. I have two of these and the eyes are not together on either of them. :/ So that's my main reason for wanting a repaint.

Will definitely ask Skiman to add some length to those nails as well. :exactly:

I'd love to see a nice translucent paint up of him... I think that could really add a lot to the already great sculpt.

So what is the recipe on the body? Is it a narrow with the longer Ezio legs?

Maglor

Correct. Narrow with the Enzio legs.

Received this figure Tuesday in the mail and could not be happier! Love it!!! Spent about an hour trying to get the perfect pose. In the top 5 of my collectibles. Really wish one of the big companies would to a 79 Nosferatu as well. Anyone customize one yet? I think the body swap you did looks much better in the shoulder area.

Distinctive Dummies has flirted with the idea of doing a 1979 Nosferatu (Kinski). Might be happening in 2016.

1/6 Nosferatu repaint and sculpted nails. Eventually I am getting a new dungeon base for him. I can now say that Count Orlock is worthy of my shelves.
