Stallone Officially Retires ROCKY

With the release of Creed 2, Stallone has officially announced he is retiring as Rocky for good.

I haven't been able to see Creed 2 yet, so please use tags if referencing spoilers, I'm starting this more as a shared discussion on the impact of this character.

I couldn't believe how much i enjoyed Creed even without Rocky fighting. Whatever went wrong with Rocky V, Stallone found a way to give us a non-fighting Rocky that was every bit as entertaining and lovable as his past films.

I know it can't go on forever, and I'd really thought Rocky Balboa was the end, but there is a sadness to hearing the journey has come to an end.

Maybe because I hadn't really followed this series when I was a child and thus wasn't waiting in anticipation of each film as they came out - I don't have a huge problem with Rocky V. It has good drama in it, to me, only soured by Tommy's mullet and some cheesy moments here and there. I'd have to watch it again. In fact, I might do so soon since I watched IV last week.

It's a great series of films overall and Rocky has been a great character.

I don't think it was so much a case of V failing to meet anticipation as it was the direction they took the character in, the level to which they dropped him from being on top of the world was almost too extreme through most of the first 2/3 of the film. Rocky Balboa and the Creed films have managed to deliver a Rocky who isn't living lifestyles of the Rich and Famous but is still a champion at heart. They dropped the "dumbing" of the character that V implemented to drive home the damage inflicted on his brain.

Not to take away from the rest of the story in the Creed films, but for me, Creed felt as much like Rocky 7 as it did a story about Apollo's son, but with a fair balance. I guess it did that so well, I had no sense that Rocky's journey may come to an end, where Rocky Balboa was clear, his fighting days are past. I was nervous about Sly coming back and how well the movie would work, and I was pleasantly surprised and walked away feeling like I'd be up for any future movie that continued Rocky's journey, even as a father/mentor figure and not the fighter. As much as watching the boxing was a very enjoyable part of the series, there's just something so enjoyable about watching stories about the character.

I feel Creed II was a great send off for Rocky. The ending when he reunited with his son and met his grandson for the first time literally made me choke up.

I'll believe it when I don't see it.

I can’t wait for Rocky to step back into the ring in twelve years!

So, what you're saying is that when Stallone needs the money, Rocky will be back to train his grandson. Probably in a title fight against Adonis Creed's kid.
