Questions re: Suicide Lane Trench Environment

Hi WWI experts,

About the prototype "Suicide Lane" that eventually became the more basic "Trench Environment," can anyone shed some light about that hanging artillery shell? Is it a bell? Some sort of makeshift receptacle, etc. Furthermore, can anyone ID what kind of shell it likely is supposed to be portraying, e.g., country of production, type (British 8 pounder?), etc.? Here's an image of the prototype that was posted much earlier on this thread (thanks to the poster!)
