But I still think it may be a good idea to take a good defense before you fill up your bench with "average" RB and WR.

It all depends on the number of players in your league like everyone has said before.

As a rule, I always take a Def with one of my last 3 picks and a Kicker is always my last pick.

The difference in avg scoring per week over the course of a season is so small that taking a Defense before Round 10 isn't really worth it IMO. Every year, a couple of those "average" RB/WR blow up and if you have them on your roster, they'll either carry you into the playoffs or they're great trade bait.

It seems to me that the better defenses score more than most of the tight ends do. My league always laughs at me when I take my defense before my tight ends and even (sometimes) before I take my bench. But it has served me well-enough so far. I have been incredibly fortunate to not be plagued by injuries to my starters and that will have a huge impact on your choices as well. Some people prefer to prepair for that possibility and I do not. But I know I am taking chances and I completely see the wisdom in being proactive to account for injuries during the season.

And QBs are usually 8 of the top 10 scorers in fantasy football....but you won't ever see 8 QBs taken in the top 10 picks. Standard scoring from 2009:

Of the top 30 fantasy points scorers, only 8 were RBs (2 in top 10, 6 in top 20, 8 in top 30), only 4 were WRs (none in top 20)...18 of the top 30 were QBs.

You cannot compare the scoring by one position with the scoring of another. If you're in a 10 team league for example, you have to compare the #1 Defense with the #10 defense and that's how you gauge the value of picks.

If, for example, you take the #1 Def in Round 5 and I take the #10 Def in round 14, I have made a better "value" pick. Last year's #1 Def was the 49ers with 167 points and the #10 was Minnesota with 126 pts. The difference in scoring averaged out per week is 2.5 pts. Hopefully this makes sense.

Well that was exciting. Stupid yahoo wouldn't connect, so I missed my first #2 pick, but I had it on auto. here's my team for this year:

The Dude
1. (2) Adrian Peterson (Min - RB)
2. (19) Tom Brady (NE - QB)
3. (22) Joseph Addai (Ind - RB)
4. (39) Steve Smith (Car - WR)
5. (42) Beanie Wells (Ari - RB)
6. (59) Hakeem Nicks (NYG - WR)
7. (62) Reggie Bush (NO - RB)
8. (79) Santana Moss (Was - WR)
9. (82) Brandon Jacobs (NYG - RB)
10. (99) Kellen Winslow (TB - TE)
11. (102) Philadelphia (Phi - DEF)
12. (119) Donovan McNabb (Was - QB)
13. (122) Braylon Edwards (NYJ - WR)
14. (139) Devin Hester (Chi - WR)
15. (142) Rob Bironas (Ten - K)
16. (159) Chester Taylor (Chi - RB)

Not a bad squad. I think your weak point could end up being your receivers. A lot will depend on if Steve Smith gets back to his old form and if Mcnabb and Moss have decent chemistry since their new teammates. Braylon Edwards is another that could be a sleeper. He had a couple great years in Cleveland then went downhill.

I had two RB and a QB before any WR, so that is probably true. I didn't like that they went so quickly. My QB choice was better than any WR's that were left, I think.

And I just asked, and apparently my league doesn't trade very often. Maybe that's normal...

Mesa, how many teams are in your league?

10 players, heads-up match up

I didn't even realize till today that it wasn't a total points scoring system.

I'm now considering benching either:
  • Steve Smith
  • Hakeem Nicks
  • or Beanie Wells (R/B/T)

for:
  • Devin Hester

and maybe also playing Chester Taylor for same reason, but probably not.

only because I think Chicago will roll over Detroit.

Plus, both my WR's (Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks) are playing against each other in the same game.

Is this a dumb move?

Don't worry about whether Wide Receivers' teams are going against each other. Concentrate on which of your Wide receivers has the best chance against the defenses they are going against.

And base that on the defense's "against-the-pass" rating and how much your QB likes to use the receiver. Sometimes if you have a great #1 receiver, he may not be your best option if he is going against a great pass defense and looks to be double-teamed all day.

After the hard time that took for my picks from the league that I am in, my team looks to end up as the third highest scoring of all 14 teams in week one.

They will have the last laugh, though, as I played the guy who looks to come it at #2.

Go figure.

Well, the guy I played ended up being #1 in our league with 133 points. #2 was 118 I was third at 105. I feel pretty good about the team. Drew Brees is my QB and he had an awful game (for him). I think the team will keep me competitive through the season.

Seems like every time Titans get the ball, the Steelrs D/ST scores more points for me. 3 int's 3 fumble recoveries, 3 sacks, kickoff return for a TD bonus for only 3 points allowed, bonus for only allowing 123 yards of "O" for the Titans...

Ya can't make this stuff up.

After two weeks I am the third highest scorer out of 14 in my league. But I am 0-2 because on week one, I played the guy who is #1 and on week 2, I played the guy who is #2. Both of them scored in the 130's to beat me.

But even if I end up at 0-13 because everyone has a stellar week against me...if I maintain my overall points at being in the top 3 or 4, it will justify my draft strategy.

And by the way...this used to happen to my brother a lot...and gues who #2 is. He simply HAD to call me and rub that in.

You must be in one of those super generous points leagues and have like only 4 players so that everyone gets teams full of ringers.:)

uh you couldnt be further from the truth. it's a 10 team league with friends.
