It was something like $1,100 USD when it was announced. Calibre Toys even had the marketing page listing that price on their website.
Once the product gained more popularity, they marked it up to $1,400.
Take a look at their website now. Yet another increase. $1,700.

One of the reason I could think of for the price increase is that the cost of production could be more than what caliber initially estimate in particular the labour cost as they maybe alot of individual painting and assembly required. The initial preorder price at my LCS was actually close to 1.7k and still available for order now.
Wanted to get this but was put off by the price and the pose and also the lack of a blaster set at this price. I hope my LCS will display as I would very much like to see how the actual item look like. I was pretty blow away by the actual SS optimus prime which look so much better in person.

For almost 2000.00 for a statue/ toy? They are going to have a problem selling those. So when the new movievcomes out maybe another increase?

I believe it was not an increase from $1,100 to $1,400 to $1,700.
Rather, the Bumblebee, originally at $1,100 was increased to $1,400
and
Optimus Prime went from $1,400 to $1,700.
From what I gather, the orignal pricing was due to the fact that Calibre initially wanted to offer this item direct to consumers, therefore being able to keep the price down.
But when that was not possible, they had to adjust it to factor in a margin for the distributors.
Definitely a pricing screw up on the part of the newbie Calibre.
But if you place the SS one alongside Calibre's, you can visibly see the difference.
I would say Calibre's version is much more intricate than SS. The light up eyes are cool as well.
Not to mention the chrome plated parts and the removable mouth piece from battle mode to normal mode.
