Hulkbuster BAF repaint?

Hello all, I am thinking about picking up the Legends Hulkbuster BAF somewhere. I think the sculpt on it looks pretty solid (from what I can see) but the paint apps make it look like a "toy" (yes, I know, it is, but, you know what I mean... lol). It seems like it shouldn't be a large job to fix. I've done fine scale models before, but I am wondering if anyone could tell me any tips for repainting a figure (never done it before)? For instance, I'm not sure I want to prime the whole thing and paint every bit of it, or if I could just get away with redoing the red parts and maybe add some weathering?

Any tips?
