Re: Hot Toys TDKR: 1/4th scale Batman [QS001] - Full Reveal & Specs

Those aftermarket prices is almost a third of my mortgage. Glad for those who are able to get it with aftermarket prices. Must be nice not having any responsibilities.
Funny thing is a big factor in me pulling the trigger now on it is because I don't have any sort of major financial responsibilities like taxes or a mortgage as of now. Probably will in the next number of years though when the QS001 is even more $$$, so that's why it looked best to act now. I was forced to sell off some of my more expensive collectives like the Legacy Millennium Falcon to get the QS001 though, and won't be able to buy some other upcoming figures I had wanted.

If you really wanted the QS001 you could budget for it too and refuse to buy some cheaper figures that come out. It does add up (and you save shelf space!). [emoji6]

Edit: Also sorry if I come off as "oh look how much money I have" kind of mentality. I really don't mean to and don't want to act like some show off. If I am completely honest with you I'm not that rich; just average. I've just had to make sacrifices in other areas with my entertainment money to get the QS001.

This is true and the big, and possibly the only, positivity about scalping. However, you have to realise that your gain is another person's loss. If people are buying multiple figures or even one figure to keep for later selling on the aftermarket at higher prices, yes it means someone who missed their chance to get it can get it a couple of years later, but it also means that those wanting it at the time of release weren't able to get it, and it also means that if they're unable to afford the huge amounts of money they're upscaled to then they're completely going to miss out. Some people just can't afford to or are willing enough to throw another couple of hundreds at a toy, and this doesn't mean that they shouldn't be trying to buy them in the first place.

The aftermarket is a natural market anyway, if everyone buys one and it sells out but a person decides to not open theirs and sell it down the line, sure, the market dictates it a rarer piece, especially for being mint and of course the price will go up. However, too many people who played Runescape and considered themselves merchants buy these pieces on purpose capitalising the nature of the aftermarket and deepening supply and demand further.

Again, if you bought one and just never opened it, it's hardly scalping, the after market price is the after market price. It's the people who buy multiples never intending to actually own or open it that try to keep the supply to increase the aftermarket demand.

Just to clarify also, I'm not talking about selling on a figure you did intend to own and open and want to sell later on, the price you put is reflective of the market, but in my opinion that's heavily dictated by the scalpers who keep the mint items to sell really highly..
Great post and a great read! I do agree with you as I said and you raise up a lot of important factors in regards to scalpling. I don't like scalpers and do not agree with their business practices, though I will admit in some cases you can't exactly blame them when it's just money sitting on the table. They invest in it and people will pay their higher prices because of the amount of available stock and the demand. It's a monopoly and it seems really scummy.

However when there's specific item you really want, sometimes scalpers are your only option after a certain point. That's the screwy part. I hate turning to scalpers, but on rare occasions I will. I'm sure almost all of us have done it at one point or another.

No not at all.

I'm more jealous you don't have any responsibilities haha!

Glad you got one now that Joker is announced. It's going to look good next to each other.

Okay good haha.

Yeah I mean there's some small responsibilities, but being in my current position (senior high school student), I don't have huge expenses. Those days are definitely approaching fast though lol. My thinking is get the spending money together to afford a few figures I really want now before that becomes harder to pull off. I've had to work my arse off for it though. [emoji6]

I'm planning on getting Joker as well; they will surely look stunning together (especially being my only Hot Toys and being 1/4).

I remember back in HS, I could not even touch Hot Toys. You're off to a good start already! Its definitely motivation to succeed to buy more HT! :)

How can you be in HS and afford these things?

I’m seriously asking. I couldn’t afford ****!

No rent, no bills, free food... unless for some reason your parents made you pay for your own livelihood when you're underage.

Could easily get some spending cash in the summer with minimum wage.

I ask myself the same question sometimes haha. It's really been just buying figures/collectibles that I want and eventually when I get bored of them or if there's something else I want more, I sell, and usually I manage to make a profit or break even.

Not to mention I'll do the odd job here and there to make money, and then there's birthdays and such too. Sometimes I'll buy figures for dirt cheap on Kijiji, clean them up, take some pretty pictures and then relist them sometime down the line. I don't do that too often though, or at least buy with the intention to sell (and I never do this for new release figures).

For example, a little over a year ago I managed to get that huge Legacy Millennium Falcon for $100. Displayed and cherished it for a year but then the 1/4 HT Joker was announced and I thought the QS001 would be more worthwhile. I became somewhat bored of the Falcon so I sold it for the going price of $400.

Just being super careful with what I spend my money on also plays a role. I hardly ever impulse buy stuff and I don't use money on things most people my age would.

And before anybody asks, my parents have been supportive of my collecting but they hardly ever support my collection financially lol.

I just picked one of these up for $475 shipped. What do you guys think? Did I get a deal?

That's around what he retailed for, so I'd say that's a good deal. I haven't checked to see how much he's going for nowadays tho
