More WIP, Pack #5, “Filter Pack” pics.

Today I took advantage of the federal holiday and decided to work on the canteen at the bottom of the pack, otherwise affectionately called the “stinger” by the cosplayer community.

I snapped off the actual stinger rod with some needle nose pliers, then I sanded the nub, and hand drilled the tiny hole. I was planning on painting the hole black, but in my reference photos it seems to be white on the inside. I re-glued it into place and used some small strips of plastic that I bent into a sub 90° angle.

Here’s the reference photos I’m using. You can see what appears to be white inside the hole on the canteen.

So, I stumbled across something really cool.

The Droid part that’s held by the Sargent in the “Look Sir, Droids” scene appears to be the emitter from the Ben Kenobi/RotJ Luke, Lightsaber.

Here’s the emitter below

Now what this means to any of us that are making our own Sandtrooper Sargent customs, is that there’s already exists in 1/6 scale a perfect replica...

I chose the RotJ to work with over the Kenobi Saber emitter because Hot Toys has started using a super convincing metallic paint on the more recent figures that I really love, and that is what was used on Luke’s RotJ Saber.

I just grabbed a Luke Saber. It should be here by Monday, and I’m super excited to complete the hand, so I should have something to show you guys early next week.

While waiting for my Droid part to arrive I did some work on my Sargent. I customized the right relaxed hand to make it into the “Look Sir. Droids” hand that holds the part, since I couldn’t find another hand that is in that position.

I basically used an Exacto knife and cut into the palm side of the base of each finger, cutting out a wedge that leave a gap similar to the gap a lumberjack leaves in a tree. Next I just used superglue (gel control for life [emoji2937]) and closed the gap I made with the blade. Lastly I glued the fingers together to complete the look. After all that was done I covered any visible dry gray glue with matte black paint.

Here’s how it looks so far. Original sculpt on the left for comparison.

That's really cool!

Awesome. Takes me right back to that (short) but iconic scene!

Very awesome!

That is too sweet. Sacrificed a Luke saber but so worth it.

So worth it!

Very cool Sandtrooepr upgrade there!! :rock

Damn... Über screen accuracy!

WTC never ceases to amaze...

Thanks so much, you guys are too kind!

A little more work done on the pauldron tonight.

I worked on the leather flaps that fasten the shoulder pauldrons around the neck of the Sandtroopers. That part of the pauldron is very “low resolution” on the Hot Toys stock version.

Here’s what the stock version looks like:

And here’s what I’m trying to replicate:

First I made a pattern out of paper by tracing the pic of the life sized version.

Then I traced the pattern onto some decent quality leather scraps I had left over from a ninja costume that I bought on eBay a few years ago.

Then I flipped the pattern over and did the same for the other half of the fastener.

For the piping around the edge, I was going to wrap some leather around some thin wire, but that was a nightmare to work with so I abandoned that. Instead I used some small, black, circular laces, also from the ninja costume.

And I carefully glued it around the edge. It was very rough looking at first, because of the somewhat visible glue, but I was able to deemphasize it by dry brushing on some flat black though.

Lastly I glued on the tiny buttons, and then glued the whole thing together.
