With all this talk of the King of the Dead
Someone should make a new poetry thread.
In the "Off Topic" place, where it should be stored..
Or "Other discussion", as on this new board.
Plus post other works, both funny and not-
But I personally like to laugh quite a lot.

A poetry thread
For the King for the Dead,
And other statues too.
Our thoughts would flow
From mind to pen,
With a saga or hiku.

Let it be said
That a poetry thread
Was started on this forum.
By Nemo Nint
And Stridersbain.
Begin this little quarum.

Another contest
Perhaps will come,
As Dave may yet announce.
So until then,
Bring paper to pen,
And remember polystone don't bounce.

Okay guys you're killing me with the poetry thread!

Sorry it took so long, but it was a tough call. And just because the winner is on the long side don't think that the shorter poems weren't equally considered. There was some good stuff here. The one in cocky was a bit difficult to read, but thankfully there was a translation. So without further ado, here's the winner of Ode to King of the Dead...
________________________________

In times long past a battle was waged, between the forces of evil and good.

A King of men swore an oath to Isildur; the consequences not understood.

When time came for the King and his men, to fulfill the oath and fight,

They forsook their promise and fled to the mountains to hide in the darkness of night.

Isildur cursed the King and his men, proclaiming they would never know rest,

Until they came forth and fulfilled their oath to fight for the Men of the West.

A long age passed, and the King and his men faded from memory and sight;

They inhabited the mountain where they had hid and devolved into phantoms of fright.

At last, a time long appointed arrived, and an heir of Isildur came forth.

He was in great need of haste, to bring help to the South from the north.

Along with friends of great courage and renown, he approached the haunted door,

Not knowing for certain if the King of the Dead would fulfill the oath of lore.

They entered the Haunted Mountain, and trod the appointed path.

And all those who followed Aragorn, feared The Dead and the rumor of their wrath.

Then one came forth and blocked their way, he was the King of the Dead!

He proclaimed that the dead do not suffer the living and all were filled with dread.

Aragorn stood forth and challenged the King, proclaiming his kinship of old;

Drawing his sword and standing his ground, he was tall, fearless and bold!

The King of the Dead wavered in doubt, and summoned The Dead to his call;

They surrounded the men and hemmed them in, standing from wall to wall.

The Heir of Isildur declared his title and faced the King once more;

He offered peace and eternal rest if they followed him to war.

The King of the Dead gave thought to his words and slowly moved aside;

The Dead filed behind the Men of the West and followed in their stride.

They marched across the southern lands and came to the Great River’s shore;

Aragorn called them to the fore and implored them to fulfill the oath of yore.

He did not know if the ancient swords would bite or whether The Dead could fight;

But he had no need to worry as he watched the Corsairs flee in fright!

Up the Great River sailed the Men of the West, with billowing sails of black.

They arrived in the morning at the Tower of Guard and Aragorn called forth the attack.

The tide was turned and the Day was won with the help of The Dead and their King.

Their oath was fulfilled and the curse was released and their spirits took flight on a wing.

I would encourage the other contestants to post their poems too, either here or in that new poetry thread that I'm sure will get put up over in The Sandbox.

Congratulations lcummins! :clap Nice work! I have started the KotD poetry thread in the Sandbox. I'd like to read everybody's work. I'd like to know if I was in the running or not.

If the entrants choose to post them they'll get posted. As I said - I encourage everyone to post theirs. Here and/or in The Sandbox thread.

Here's my effort:

The King of the Dead,
Crown upon his head,
With skin of transparent green.

The way is shut,
His words thus cut,
Haunting the Paths of the Dead.

All that is spoken,
Is of the oath that was broken,
Here in the land of Gondor.

But upon Aragons call,
The curse will fall
And the Dead can finally rest.
