You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on
other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of
1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats,
in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions
of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in
battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
and noble undertaking.

I can't describe the deepest respect I have for those men who brought freedom to Europe so I can live in peace today.

Bless them.

great thread!!! since i started working at the veteran's hospital last month i've worked with a couple WWII vets and had a chance to talk with one guy that was awarded a silver star and two purple hearts. for a dude that was 92 he was still pretty darn lively.

they TRULEY are the greatest and most interesting generation.

my paternal grandfather was a navy corpsman with the marines in the pacific. he still parties like he's 18. every 20 years his newest wife gets 10 years younger. i haven't met his most recent, but she's slightly older than me. and hi OD'd on viagra in rio de janerio a few years ago. he also hijacked trucks and killed guys in the 50's and 60's with the nj mob scene. he also ran with the rat pack, tony bennett, ted kennedy, etc....a real maniac. i'm working on a story of his life.

I have a friend who was a b-17 pilot. he was shot down over italy in 42. spent a long time in a pow camp. he was a jewish kid from brooklyn, and the nazis knew it. for whatever reason, they kept him with the rest of his crew. i write with him at out vets center

i've another friend form the 101 who jumped into normandy and holland. great stories. he's a pal of my grandpa.

these guys in their late 80's/ early 90's, you'd think they were still 20.

i hope i'm that spry if i live that long.

Time to watch Band of Brothers. Just bought it on Blu-Ray.

great on blu-ray. i have problems watching it since coming home. the battle scenes get my adrenaline way up and the buddy scenes dredge up a lot of things. I have the DC and BR of black hawk down and can't bring myself to put em in. i knew some of those guys.
