the Alien films are definitely richer in storyline, design and subtext. Predator films are great (at least the first one), but aside from the creatures, they really are quite simple films...

i think Predator was successful due to 3 things: the cloaking effect (it was a fresh concept), the spooky heat vision (which exemplifies the hunt), and the fact that the creature beat the crap out of Arnie... these things were unprecedented.

but Alien as a whole was influential in so many different areas... the idea of a "used" future (none of that squeaky clean Star Wars setting), Giger's influence, and a strong female character... just to name a few. it was quite literally a landmark in science fiction AND horror.

i couldn't agree with you more. only difference is I really enjoyed both predator 1 AND predator 2.

I have yet to see any Predator or Alien movies. I saw the first one released in both franchise years ago, but for some reason, I could never get into them. I'll def. have to give them another try seeing how so many people are huge fans of them.

If Alien: Resurrection grew on anyone AvPR sure as hell will.
Alien: Resurrection still has yet to grow on me ever since I saw it opening wkend 1997 and have gone through 2 different releases of the DVD. It will forever suck the sweat off a dead agy emo's balls.

The effects were new yes, but the Oscar was lost to Innerspace (1987) that year.

I think it was successful basically cos it was Arnold off the success of The Terminator (1984) and Commando (1985) where he was cast in a "The Wild Buch meets Alien" type story and he was part of a team of tough guys. The Predator itself too was an fascinating creature design.

i remember first watching Predator when i was 5 or 6 cos i was a huge Arnie fan... and when that blurry thing came up behind Hawkins...

:eek

i slept with the lights on for the longest time. ask my parents and they'll tell you the only thing i feared during my childhood was a cloaked Predator. no kiddin...

That's the new generation of movie-goer for you and the reason why so many remakes are being made but he did say he'd seen the original films from each franchise. Wonder if he's seen Robocop or The Terminator??
