I just opened this piece and I can't figure out how do you keep the inner jaw to stay out? The sliding knob on the back of its head seems spring loaded, and when I release it, the jaw goes back inside the mouth.

The trick is leverage.
I suggest you find an open area as you might have to stand up.
Use your thumb to push the lever all the way forward.
If you hold the figure above your head, your success rate will go up.
Now slam dunk it into the trash.

Jokes aside. There's a notch to the left or right when the lever is pushed all the way forward. It should hold if you apply pressure to the side.

Some people's figures have the notch worn down to the point where the latch won't catch. You should be able to feel the groove with your fingers though.

That's another thing I hate about the HT aliens aside from the limited articulation. HT should've changed the design of the mouth to not use rubber and make it plastic and interchangeable while keeping the seamless aesthetic.

With their insistence on rubber I think they're deliberately trying to differentiate their product from the likes of NECA - to make their Aliens 'feel' high-end by comparison. What they don't seem to get is that people just want higher quality NECA Aliens. Those figures are prone to breakages, warping, wonky jaws and bad paint. However, for the most part, people love the sculpts. All Hot Toys has to do is make plastic figures that don't have those NECA QC issues. Bringing rubber into the equation just invites different kinds of QC issues - rotting, tearing and flaking paint - not to mention the extremely limited mobility.

I wonder what their real reason is for using rubber. Rubber doesn't equal "high-end" for me and I bet to a majority of collectors but they should really get rid of the "action feature" inner jaw of their alien figures. If they can do interchangeable mouths on their predators, they can surely think of a way to make it for their alien figures.

I wonder if it's a money-saving move. Could it be cheaper to cast a thin rubber/vinyl suit and place an existing skeleton inside than to add joints to a sculpt and cast those individual pieces in hard plastic?

It's so there are no seams and the mouth behaves in a life-like manner with stretching tendons. Had mine for months and it's fine.

They use visible joints on so many other figures, though. You'd think they'd be more willing to do the same on a character whose skin texture is better at hiding joints.

The BIG problem is rubber doesn't last as long as plastic. I would love to pose and keep an HT alien figure with their mouth open but I can't because of the constant fear the rubber might snap and break.

Is it possible to reglue the famous rubber on the side of the mouth?

So...this happened. Ten months on the shelf since I got it, I take it out for some pictures, move the arm up and outward a bit and snap. WTF. The ball joint in the arm was so tight, it takes using pliers to even move it now that it's snapped off. Has anyone else experienced this? Is my statue of limitations expired for exchange?

Oh wow...
Some HT figures are prone to breakage, but it's the first I've seen in an alien*.
I think one of the Spiderman figures had this issue, and my Bespin Luke also has extremely stiff shoulders, so much so that I don't dare move them.

*other than the infamous v1.0 Aliens figures...

Exactly the same thing happened on my Big Chap. I guess the internal parts are the same. The internal chest is moulded in 2 halves (front and back). The shoulder peg is moulded onto the centre-line where the 2 meet but is only supported on the back part. There's no support from the front half at all, so not a very good design. Repairing it is nigh on impossible.

Uh, that sucks. Happened to my Jake Sully figure. A piece of blue tag has kept the arm in place ever since.

Holy hell, I thought you were referring to a NECA figure with that post. Damn. Unacceptable at $20. Straight-up insulting at $200+.

The only way to repair that now would be to completely modify the joint using a nut, bolt and washer.

A more complex option would be to remove the internals.
Then re-glue the joint, of which a mold is to be made.
Place a support rod where the peg is to be cast, and recast the entire section.
Way too much effort in my opinion.

Again, a piece of blue tag and a pose that doesn’t put too much restraint on the arm can do it so you won’t see it.
