Rewatched the movie last night, and it still gets me when Kirk toasts to "absent friends" right at the moment Anton appears on screen.
Honestly? The figure I want the most from the modern Trek films is Scotty. I really think it's time we get a good Simon Pegg sculpt in 1/6 scale.
It hasn't been released everywhere yet, has it? China...?
I think the problem is Beyond just looked to a lot of people like just another Star Trek movie, or just another routine adventure. It didn't really have that "Event" kind of feel to it like the first one did (or even Into Darkness featuring what everybody knew would be Khan).
It still managed to be a pretty fun and entertaining movie, but if the studio really wants to keep this going they better make sure the movies have a much stronger idea and hook behind them from the start.
It's really good imo. I would say it's the best of the nuTrek films and they really nailed the imitation of the classic characters, especially Bones and Kirk. The balance of humor and serious tone is just right and it feels very genuine in a lot of regards. Having Simon Pegg as a writer on the film paid off greatly.
Spoiler:How many times do we need to see the Enterprise be destroyed in a Star Trek movie? It has no real emotional impact anymore as we know they will get a new ship with a letter added on in the end. Makes me feel like StarFleet builds these ships to be disposable making sure they always have the next Enterprise in the pipeline for when (not if) it gets destroyed. The original series Enterprise lasted 20 years before getting destroyed, it's destruction had real emotional impact told in a story where you felt it was a real sacrifice. Even the Enterprise D had some emotional impact as it lasted 7 seasons on TV before being destroyed in a movie. But each time they do this it looses its impact because we have seen it before and there is less time and emotional investment in the ship itself. I wish they would stop doing this, and the Enterprise's destruction was the most "Meh" aspect of ST Beyond only serving the purpose of getting the crew stuck on the ground; which could have been accomplished another way.
Yeah I was really excited about the reboot idea early on, and loved the first movie and the great things that it promised... but by this point it's clear they're never going to do anything all that interesting with the idea. And not do much more than give us one breezy, simplistic, fast-paced action flick after another.
That said though, I do really love the actors and the way they've inhabited these characters so well, and would love to have a few of their figures on my shelf.
