I'm really not gonna start hating on P-Diddy, because I actually like the character & the first 2 Hellraiser films. So I'll just jump to Freddy's defence, instead, without resorting to more Pinhead insults.

Freddy was comedic even in the first film. It's his thing. Yes, he became more comedic & the films more light-hearted from 3 onwards, although 5 was actually pretty dark, but trying to make out that Freddy somehow became a 'joke', as you call him, just makes no sense for the very reason I've just stated. Humour has always played a big part of his inimitable style.

& you praise Pinhead for bringing something new to the horror genre because, as you rightly say, he did something that hadn't been done before. & what about Freddy? Were there lots of movie serial killers killing people in their dreams before he came along? You want an original horror creation, well there it is in a nutshell. & the fact that Freddy exudes comedic charm & charisma thanks to Robert Englund's wonderful performance clearly sets him apart from the regular hoi polloi of horror movie antagonists. Although that's not to say he's unique, in that regard. Pinhead also exudes charm & wit & Chucky is, like Freddy, very comedic in his murderous approach.

So praise for Pinhead is something I actually agree with. But your criticism of Freddy just doesn't hold water. If you don't like the character, that's one thing, but a joke he never became as he didn't outstay his welcome. 6 films & then dead. He, at least, bowed out with some dignity. Spinoffs & remakes not withstanding.

Oh no, don't mistake me for a Freddy hater, sir. I loved Freddy, all the way up to Dream Warriors. However you will notice when watching the films the Comedy aspect of the Freddy character elevates as the films go on. In the First Nightmare it's not even comedy so much has his sadistic pleasure in making them scream. The Second, a pun here and there, and the Third a few more but not really anything crazy. Once Dream Master came out it basically makes him so much less scary and much more ridiculous. To the point where I find myself no longer feeling threatened by the character and have to take the rest of the series as Dark Comedies instead of straight up horror films. Robert Englund is Freddy, always will be but the last 4 films, including New Nightmare towards the end, well it just feels like they lost the character along the way.

Its really too bad they took such liberties with Freddy's character in the remake, Jackie Earl Haley could have been a great Freddy if they had let him show just how vicious the character was originally.

CBG Can you sell your Big chap maquette to python, since it's just sitting on some cardboard, dusting away?!

Okay, that was trolling, lol sorry.

Big chap must stay in my collection now because of the stunning soon to arrive Mark newman she predator. Both will go next to each other since I missed out on the predator LSF wolf. I will wish for a wolf PF in the near future. If it was not the she predator coming out soon. Big chap will get the boot.
As for pinhead I love the character design. He just looks so cool as a horror character. If they make a Myers, chunky, and Tiffany, crow then my 80s horror will be complete. But still the my best ever horror characters must be jason and freddy by far. Freddy is always the most well know dangerous horror character to ever exist. He can kill anyone in thier dreams. Even jason was almost killed if the kids didn't help him in the jason vs freddy movie. The will never be any horror character that will beat Freddy in terms of how deadly he is. Just the most fear character ever in history.

Yeah, fair enough, Josh. I do want to take back my original comment that Pinhead has become a joke. In retrospect, you're right that however far I may feel the films dropt off in quality as they went along shouldn't really reflect on the character of Pinhead. He did remain, essentially, the same character throughout the series. Although I've not actually seen the 9th film that doesn't star Doug Bradley.

How was the other performer as Pinhead, Josh? Did he do a good job or was the character noticeably different?

It was horrid. It came off as a cosplay gone terribly wrong. I think once a certain actor breathes life into a character for any length of time and to the point where he becomes that character, trying to replace him is futile. Englund and Bradley just are those characters.

Yeah, I feel your pain, buddy. I did not like Jackie Earle Haley's rendition of Krueger one little bit. Robert Englund 'is' Freddy Krueger just like Doug Bradley 'is' Pinhead.

I'm just glad that Mr. Bradley has been confirmed by Clive Barker as the man to reprise his role in the Remake/Reboot or whatever the hell Hollywood calls them now. I'm with you in that I think, if done well with due care & attention, a reinvention for this franchise could be something quite special indeed for us horror fans.

Wow two different people play pinhead? A remake to bring us more bro on this character is needed for the new generartion as well as fans of this character.

Being a big fan of Freddy v Jason, I already knew that fact that you posted, CBG, about a proposed ending for it being them both going to hell & being greeted there by Pinhead. I would've loved that ending, personally.

And as far as a sequel goes, I would've much preferred Pinhead to be involved in a triumvirate with those two titans of terror over Michael Myers or Ash simply because I think that the dialogue exchanged between Freddy & Pinhead could've been first class & a joy to behold.

Sadly, not to be. :(

Man, I can't believe it's really been 12 years since Freddy v Jason? :thud:

I'm hoping with both Bradley back and Clive writing if they can find the correct director, maybe Fede Alvarez or Alexandre Aja, we may get a "good" remake, which doesn't happen often.

In my recent (and on-going) Horror movie marathon, I watched all the Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm Street films.

When I came to the last two, which featured actors other than Englund and Bradley playing Freddy and Pinhead, I was appalled. Whoever thought that was a good idea is beyond stupid. Everything about the characters instantly vanished. Not even the make-up was the same.

Crazy isn't it, how much of the actors are in those two characters.

I totally agree, Xeno. To a masked character like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers or Leatherface it really doesn't make a jot of difference if different actors play them. But with Pinhead & Freddy it makes a world of difference. If you can't get the original actors to play these two iconic horror characters then just let these 2 horror franchises rest in piece.

Weird part is, with Myers it doesn't matter with leather face it really doesn't matter but for me with Jason Vorhees, even though the Friday films were down hill by this point, Kane Hodder is still the only one who's Jason seemed to ooze intimidation. I think it was just the way he carried his body and the way he moved. I would not want that man coming at me.

Even fully suited actors can make or break a character by the way they move and their body language.
Kevin Peter Hall is a great example.
Well said.

Jason and Michael just have that emotionless walk, there's not much to it, though I agree some actors have pulled it off better than others. The Predator however has a specific style to his movements, which Kevin Peter Hall created and perfected. Ian Whyte has done a pretty good job, but the actors in Predators were dreadful. They made the predators' movements as generic as can be.

But yeah, it's always going to be worse with characters who don't wear much prosthetics, like Pinhead and Freddy. It was just sad seeing those great characters being portrayed by two completely different people.

If actors get too old to play these characters anymore, the answer isn't recasting them, it's bringing in new characters so you don't **** all over the originals and the series can still go on.

Oh, absolutely. KPH was amazing in Predator 1 & 2. He was also wonderful at the other end of the cinematic spectrum when he played the lovable Bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons. I actually saw that last year for the first time in many years & still really enjoy it.
