just wondering (and it could actually be a good podcast subject): do you guys feel any guilt spending that much for "toys" (that's the term other people would use)? how does your loved ones sees this passion? Anybody actually lost a spouse for real because she "wanted a trip to Europe" instead or "wanted a diamond ring"?
I've been collecting hot toys since about 1 month and spent about $1000 (although half of it was financed by selling blu rays and McFarlane action figures) and I am telling myself that I need to stop for a few months, out of guilt (money isn't exactly a problem, nor is the wife!!)
it's simply guilt because its too much money in such a short time. I see these people with hundreds of figures and I am amazed that its basically $30,000 displayed in detolfs

Yup I'm in that boat, have been collecting sideshow on and off for a couple of years but only started collecting Hot Toys since Xmas...I've bought nine in the last three months and am telling myself I have to slow down
it's sooooo hard! (currently have six on pre order)Money is not a big problem but I do have to be selective which sucks! My latest back and forth is do I get Snake Eye's and Storm Shadow or Agent Coulson and Tony Stark? Can't justify buying them all...I want them all to be sure, but spending that much to get all of them would add too much of a price tag stain on the collection which I don't want. I don't want to be thinking omg look how much I've spent when admiring my collection.
I'm lucky that my Wife likes my collection but with a flood of them rocking up lately I did feel a little guilty. So to solve that I bought her one
Nothing says please understand my expensive collecting hobby like the gift of a 12inch Johnny Depp haha she loved it (bought her Sweeney Todd) worked a treat

My daughter got me the regular version a few years back for Christmas, it's a great figure. Too bad they didn't extend the space story line.

Hi, everyone! First time posting in this topic.
I started collecting like three or four years ago, but before that I already had a few things that I bought occasionally.
My first purchases (that I made before my habit of collecting figures actually started), were some DC Direct figures. I was always mostly a passionate comic reader, mainly oriented at DC and Independent stuff, and my interest in figures sort of branched out from my interest in comics.
IIRC, my first figures were the original 6 inch Golden Age Green Lantern, Phantom Lady, Golden Age Green Lantern Soft Toy (plush), JLA Aquaman, Reactivated Superman, and little more. Except the Golden Age Green Lantern stuff, most of the other things I already sold ages ago, at this point.
After those, I started collecting Mattel's DC Universe Classics, mainly attracted by the "C&C" craze (collect & connect). I got bored of them eventually, as they left me very dissatisfied due to the excessive articulation, that tended to destroy the sculpts. That was the case specially with the females characters, and the horrible "mid-tight" aberration. So, I got back at buying DC Direct, with figures from the Green Lantern series, Brightest Day, Flashpoint, and some Superman related characters here and there. I also bought a few from NECA (a pair of Assassins Creed, a Predator, a Rocky Balboa, an Apollo Creed, and the Street Fighter IV figures), and some old Spawn figures from McFarlane Toys.
Later, I got VERY absorbed into the Masters of the Universe Classics line. Got lots of characters, but the whole line was plagued with lots of problems regarding distribution, availability, quality control, and some really bad engineering decisions (like Stinkor's arms, who I decided not to buy), and eventually, I stopped buying them. Just got burned out by all the problems.
At that point in the hobby, I started rethinking my collecting habbits, and the possibility of giving my collection another direction.
So far, I had never bought statues and mini-busts, so I started slow. Got the six mini-busts from the Watchmen movie by DC Direct, and some of the Cover Girls of the DC Universe inspired by Adam Hughes art.
Gotta say... I was VERY pleased. Action figures have the problem that if you want them to be fully poseable, they won't always look good in every pose you put them on. If they have too many articulations, at some point they start looking unnatural and robotic. So, I rather buy a statue that's stuck forever in a pose I like, and will always look good.
So, my jump to statues was a fact. Slowly, I started getting more of those. And just because my favorite fictional character (overall, not just in comics. I love the concept, in fact) has always been Superman, I decided I'd have at least, a nice looking section dedicated to him, with statues and mini-busts.
By that time, I was already waiting for "Man of Steel" to be released at the theatres, and have only seen some promo shots here and there in the net, and lots of fan art and teasers. And then DC Collectibles announced their "Superman Metallic" line, and the Man of Steel Iconic line, and I thought "I'm sure going for these!".
Just a few days ago, I pre-ordered my first Hot Toys, which is going to be, obviously, the Man of Steel Superman with Henry Cavill's likeness. I'm really looking forward to it. I also preordered the Superman For Tomorrow ARTFX statue from Kotobukiya, which is based on Jim Lee's art, and looks amazing.
I still gotta make the jump at Sideshow's Premium Format... I'm considering it, because they really are too expensive for me. But I'm very impatiently waiting for that Man of Steel Superman. I always watch photos of how incredible those figures are, and just can't wait to have my first.

When I was collecting McFarlane I bought her a 7 inch Twilight action figure (*gasp*), but now at $300 a figure I doubt that she would be happy to receive one (as opposed to, say, a romantic night at an hotel)

Such a Beautiful display. Those cabinets are so professional clean and professional looking. Very classy....
I have been collecting Transformers for years and I have what everyone else has good old Detolfs. They are ok, but your cabinets are so much nicer. Now that I started collecting Hot Toys last month I need to decide if I want to keep buying detolfs, or build a custom cabinet.

That looks like a lot of wasted space at the bottom of those cabinets, are they draws?
I've been collecting for about five years and with a baby on the way you better be carful, Hot Toys figures are addictive. If what you have is everything I have about four to five times that and it happened with me not even noticing it. Well, not until I got my credit card bill, but even then my wife has to tell me or I never see it.
