Honestly, I blame the Jack Sparrow character. That's where he started to jump the shark... with the POTC sequels.

Definitely. I thought he did an awesome job in the first Pirates movie...and then he did it again...and again...and again in different movies, and it got tiresome. I honestly enjoyed Public Enemies more than almost all of the movies he's been in post-POTC 2. Hopefully, Transcendence is a return to form for him.

I never understood Depp fanatics. You guys are enabling him to fade into obscurity. It got to the point where his fans would see anything, just for him, and now, look upon your creation. He's complacent, and he plays the same quirky characters under the same directors, and, little by little, his audience is disappearing. 5 years ago, The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows would've been guaranteed successes. Now, they're barely scraping by; not even that, really.

I like Depp, and I think he's a good actor, but I think he's been phoning it in for too long, now, and he needs to find a new role that can challenge him before it's too late.

If he had been the Riddler, he could've ridden that wave for quite some time

I don't see how Depp continually playing Sparrow is any different than an actor continually playing a superhero :dunno it's just like Reeve wanting to continue to play Superman, Toby wanting to continue with Spider-Man, etc....depending on your connection with the character/actor you may or may not want them to continue in that role. He likes to play looney funky looking characters which is what I love about him and when it comes time to take on a serious role he tends to it justice as well (finding neverland, public enemies). He's my favorite actor, but I'm not a fantatic. I do like most of his movies but I'm not afriad to say that I think some are bad (man who cried, cry baby).

Because it's become shtick. Very tired, nearly tedious shtick. Depp is too talented for such nonsense.

Exactly. At the end of the day, Depp worked his way up to the blockbuster star he's become, and he's clearly got chops, but he undermines his abilities every time he does a "Jack Spar-faux" performance.

So Hot Toys will make any starring role of Depp into a figure then. I look forward to seeing the Hot Toys figure of Depp as the Wolf in Into the Woods. :rolleyes2

Come to think of it, I actually would like to see that. That would be cool.

Agreed.

The Superman/Spiderman thing isn't a valid comparison. If Depp wants to make more Pirates movies to play Jack Sparrow, cool. The problem I see with him now is that whenever a role has an element of comedy to it, he brings Jack Sparrow into it, even when the character isn't called Jack Sparrow. Tonto is basically a native american Jack Sparrow. There were lines in the Dark Shadows trailer that sounded more Jack Sparrow than Barnabas Collins.

It's weak when you know what he's capable of.

Hey, I love Reeve as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to begrudge Cavill because "the old way is the best." If I want Reeve, I'll watch Reeve...on DVD and Blu-Ray. You should do the same with Depp. If you love Sparrow, watch Sparrow, but don't hold Depp back because you enjoy watching him turn each performance into a stereotype of himself.:p

Your username's Gipetto, for Pete's sake, you should know all about love and acceptance, and the need for change.:lol :hi5:

Lol I here you man. im just yanking your chain right now :wink1: I just enjoy the man's movies. Is that crime? Trust me, I love it when he pulls out a stellar performance like in in Public Enemies or Ed Wood, I truly do. I'm not saying I don't get tired of Sparrow. I almost fell asleep in POTC4. That one had to grow on me. When they announced another POTC, I was like really? another one? I totally understand what folks are saying but it doesn't make me want to see his movies any less, even if there is some Sparrow in there. However, Sparrow isn't my favorite character of his, I've been liking Depp since Edward Scissorhands and Benny & Joon. I see the same thing with Tom Cruise. Ppl say he's pretty much the same character in every movie (which I don't disagree on) but I still love going to see his movies :)

Some people have a style. Take Nicholson, for example; I just don't think Sparrow is Depp's. He'd been playing many roles before Sparrow, and he never really used the "quirky, possibly intoxicated" schtick before (not counting Fear and Loathing):lol. You aren't guilty of anything. I just think that Depp is a better actor than the Spar-faux performances make him out to be.

If I want to see Sparrow, I'll go to the next POTC film, not The Lone Ranger.:lol I think Transcendence will be a return to form for him, though.

Well if that's the philosophy...let's go with Glen Lantz...lol.
