Re: (FLOSI'S Cantina) aka Where the "cool guys" of the Star Wars forum hangout...

It really is crazy how differently we approach media from 20-30 years ago. Everything is generally right at our fingertips whereas back in the day it took a lot of work to find any information on upcoming films and even then it was spotty at best.

Honestly the internet has taken quite a bit of fun out of new movies. I prefer going into a movie cold and experiencing it like I did when I was younger.

Although on the upside the inernetz did protect me from buying George's latest ass raping of the OT :lecture

True, there are positives to instant communication.

I'm definately not one that feels the internet killed my movie going experience, if i'm not stong enough to avoid spoilers then the shame is on me.

That being said, as much torture as it was waiting for movies that you caught a glimpse of from starlog and famous monsters magazine, it was awesome seeing them 99% unspoiled.

If anything I think that I easily give into the spoilers now because of having grown up w/o them.

It's funny, I now sometimes wish it was like the days before the internet yet as a kid/young adult it sucked not knowing. :lol

Actually, I don't really remember if it even bothered me as a kid, I kinda just went with the flow. :lol

Re: (FLOSI'S Cantina) aka Where the "cool guys" of the Star Wars forum hangout...

I avoid spoilers like the plague... can't stand them as I've really felt like a few movies I learned too much about were ruined by my foreknowledge.

One of my favorite things was dragging my parents to the bookstore to see if the latest issue of Starlog was out. Magazines were the only way you found out about anything back then.

I remember going into my local LCS to buy Fangoria and I always used to check Starlog for SW content. If I found some, it made the stack. I miss the days of collective literacy. :( :lol

Re: (FLOSI'S Cantina) aka Where the "cool guys" of the Star Wars forum hangout...

Reading some of this makes wish I had seen some of it when SW was first hitting. I say this because I wonder if it would make me like SW more than I do and get more upset by some of the changes. For me I have to try and relate it to lotr and how much I love that.

Had it all at one point, still have a lot of it in storage, but can't be bothered to join the rape victims. :lol

That's no joke! :lol

Starlog was a great magazine. This issue with the X-Wing and TIE Fighter burned that image into my brain.

And this is one of my favorite covers. This issue was in my Christmas stocking on Christmas day. :lol

BTW, I have about 100 issues sitting in my storage unit starting with issue number one. :lol

I absolutely love the OT (obviously). But I don't get butt-hurt over the changes and hate Lucas the way some do. It is what it is. I don't want to spend the time or energy dwelling on what I don't like about what Lucas has done. To me, complaining constantly somehow would make me feel bitter about something I love. :dunno

That's cool. I would think going back and checking it out from time to time would be cool. It is for me looking at my Lott stuff and that's only been 10 years. I can't blame ya on the last part. :lol

Yeah, I don't get being that upset ala burning a set of Blu-Rays. As I was told maybe I'm too easy to please but like you said I refuse to let things I like become things I loathe.

Re: (FLOSI'S Cantina) aka Where the "cool guys" of the Star Wars forum hangout...

While it might've been the "punk" thing to do in the 90's with the SW revival going on, the Lucas hating just seems so ____ing cliché nowadays. :lol

Any time period before the internet I consider it to be the communication dark times, so the 30s is the same for me as the 70s and 80s.

Remember, i'm referring to getting info on movies.

Of course it was harder living in general in the earlier to mid decades of the 20th century in comparison to the 70s and 80s that's for certain but for the most part anytime before the internet the only way to get movie info was thru magazines (famous monsters then starlog then fangoria).

Let me tell ya Josh, yes i'm a semi old fart for starters but I wouldn't trade in my movie going life experiences for anything!

Even just going to find the unrated Day of the Dead in a movie theater was an exhilarating and thrilling experience.

Words alone can't describe seeing these movies on initial release in a theater, and I did:

SW
Raiders
Indy Temple of Doom
Superman 1 and 2
Batman 89
Halloween 2
The Thing
Friday the 13th
Conan
Die Hard
Prom Night
Predator
Terminator
The Road Warrior
ET
Close Encounters
American Werewolf in London
Fright Night
Day of the Dead
Reanimator
Star Trek Wrath of Khan
And much more!

Yet, here I am today, a huge geek that just had an experience like no other, one that rivals my early geek days I just described.

I just watched the Pod Race with my 3 yr old son in a 5.1 home theater with 2 very powerful subwoofers and a huge screen, and him standing in the middle of the room jumping up and down and pumping his fists in the air and yelling "YES!" when little Anakin fixed his loose power coupling! :lol

He even knows how to use an Ipad 2! :horror

Life is simply amazing, if I only had these items when I was a kid! :panic:

Today I can just order a bluray on Amazon of any movie I want :lol

Remember when VHS of movies cost $100 to own :horror

You wanna talk about movie going experiences? :lol

The first time I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was at the age of 16 at a college campus auditorium on some crappy movie screen. It was awesome in every sense of the word.

I was pissed about the Blu-ray changes until I got my 720p copies of the original versions. He can do whatever the Hell he wants now.
