I agree 100%. HT should be careful with pricing themselves out of the market. If it were any other figure, I wouldn't be gouged like this. I think HT knows that they can charge this because of the popularity of the characters.

:exactly: This line is a whole different animal than most of the figures they release. Its almost like they can name their own price because most (me included) will pay it for this iconic film. As long as this doesnt become the norm for the DX line, I dont mind paying this for special figures.

Sweeney Todd is a perfect example. He looks awesome, but at $190, I can't justify spending that much for a figure that would be cool to have but that I won't miss if I don't order it. If it were 150-160, I'd buy in an instant.

And its almost sold out.

I don't want to prolong the direction of this discussion - but "overpriced" is a relative term. As many above mentioned, the economics of collectibles production has changed radically in the past few years. HT has chosen to continue innovating and putting out HIGH-END collectibles, rather than compromising and releasing something that isn't as good as it could be. We have Hasbro and Mattel for that. Does anyone think that there is a difference between the $80 Mattel Reeve and the HT one?

Yes, it's getting expensive - I was talking with some Sideshow peeps at SDCC about how the statue is the entry level price point for collectibles - look at pricing on the SSC LotR statues vs HT figures.

But it is a hobby that relies on discretionary income - like your beer and cigarettes you have to be an adult and cut yourself off if you don't feel like the value is there anymore.

:lecture HTs strives for perfection and you cant expect to get that for the price of something thats sold at TRU.

Cripes...no one's expecting $15 per-figure pricing. But paying the same $179 that a DX cost just two years ago would sure be nice. Why is that such an unreasonable expectation? :dunno

Had these figures been $199 a piece, no one would have flinched.

:cuckoo:
Nobody, not even the Darklord, in the post which you quoted, compared HT pricing to mass market prices.

:exactly::exactly:
That's more like it.

Sorry for my OCD, but here's my analysis. It's pretty much a wash. I'll probably order through the forum links so Dave can get paid. I estimated shipping to be $20. Probably more, which is more reason to order through this forum directly from SS.

Unfortunately the state of the world economy and the radical change in China's economy does make it an unreasonable expectation.

Now HT could try to outsource to India or Vietnam - but I'm guessing they'd then soon experience the same issues with producing in a remote location with a work force that doesn't speak your language that plague US companies who outsource to China.

I didn't mean that it should be that low of a price, but when we expect a figure to be of the highest quality this is what happens. If every figure was this price I'd tell them to piss off but with these iconic characters and with them being as close to the real person, I dont mind paying the price. Look at Indy, looks like the $250 version of the stunt double. At least with these, we are getting fantastic looking figures.

I've trawled a lot of threads in the time I've been here and this one takes the cake for incessant whining. Everything from China to Obama to some grand Hot Toys conspiracy has been blamed for the cost of this dolly. Pity the poor fools who try to get a word in about the figure itself, or try to keep a positive spin on this thread. It's like a frenzy of half-baked ignorance in here, a self-perpetuating numbnut hysteria perpetrated by a bunch of entitlement whinebags with a disproportionate sense of their capacity to cobble together an opinion about anything that anyone outside of their own narrow sphere of thought could give a toss about. You all need a good kick in the nuts.
