EW Exclusive: Don’t count Freeman Out

EW.com comes through today with an update to the Martin Freeman story…
Yesterday, the British newspaper The Sun ran a story saying that Martin Freeman (a.k.a. Tim from the original U.K. Office) had to decline an offer (and seven-figure payday) to play Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’sHobbit movies due to a scheduling conflict: The actor was already committed to shoot the BBC seriesSherlock, in which he plays Dr. Watson. That’s all true, but according to sources close to the Hobbitproduction, it’s not over yet. New Line and MGM, the studios backing the Hobbit films, have since come back to Freeman with a proposed schedule that would allow him to shoot both projects. All parties are currently negotiating a deal.

EDIT ALREADY POSTED:

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

So if that's true, it's almost as good as saying that the project has been given the green light. If you didn't have a very good idea of when things are going to start, then how could you possibly proposed a schedule around other already fixed dates.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

OK guys I will give Sherlock a try.
My wife I are more traditionalist when it comes to Sherlock Holmes, that's why we have both avoided the TV show and the Downey Jr movie. I will now check out both

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

But they're in debt, how greedy can you be when you're in debt? I'm sure they're gagging to get The Hobbit done, but they need to be sure they're OK financially to give it the green light.

I think they're holding out for more money in a buyout/bailout, dangling the valuable licenses as bait. In the meantime, any value the Bond license had is leaving as Craig is moving on with other projects and everybody who's worth a damn for The Hobbit is also getting ready to move on. GDT has already bailed for other projects, Ian will head out when his play is done and Lee, quite literally, as he's not long for this world. So they're greedily cutting off their own nose to spite their face.

Sadly, you may be right.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If this movie is ever going to be made right, PJ needs to step it up with New Line and go full scale like LOTR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Apparently it appears that Neill Blomkamp may be back in to direct the Hobbit movies...the rumor mill is seriously churning once again!!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think Valfar already posted that link in the "What Are You Listening To" thread. :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but there may be a big problem with getting any big name actors signed for the film, including people like Ian McKellen. The producers are refusing to engage performers on union-negotiated agreements, and all the major acting unions in the US, UK, Canada and Australia have written to all members urging them not to accept work on the film.

While big name actors would be able to negotiate the right terms for themselves, they would be loath to cross a union line, especially given all the bad publicity that the rest of the industry is capable of generating for them. People like McKellen also come from a theatre background where camaraderie amongst performers is very important.

And before anyone starts in on greedy actors, etc, etc, many of them work low-paid jobs most of the year, indeed most of their lives, and without decent unions behind them they can end up getting no residuals on DVDs, merchandise, etc, as well as bad working conditions, including overly long days, no breaks in filming, etc.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Where's all that come from? I've heard nothing like it, and i'm sure TheOneRing.net would have mentioned it :dunno
I extremely doubt they'll have trouble getting big-name actors or the people they need.
